Parkland shooter trespassed at Stoneman Douglas months before the shooting (with clip)

October 12, 2018

"Six months before his murderous attack, Nikolas Cruz trespassed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, wearing a hoodie, carrying a backpack and -- ominously now -- mingling among students, newly released records reveal.

He’d been forced out of Stoneman Douglas the prior school year. But computer science teacher Sandra Rennie told a detective she saw Cruz among other students on the first day of school in August 2017.

‘I was like oh Nik, you’re back, and he’s like: ‘Yeah I’m back,’ and I was like okay well good to have you back.”

In a recent interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Rennie said she wasn’t alarmed but immediately went to an administrator and asked whether Cruz was on her classroom roster.

She was told no — and an administrator hustled off to find Cruz and presumably escort him off the property....

Rennie’s comments were part of a batch of new witness statements released by prosecutors Friday in one of the nation’s worst mass shootings.

They show:..."

Superintendent Robert Runcie gets mixed reviews from School Board

The Broward County School Board has given Superintendent Robert Runcie mixed reviews for his leadership during a traumatic year.

A year after rating Runcie as highly effective and extending his contract to 2023, School Board members were less supportive this year in his evaluation, released at 9 p.m. Friday.

While they praised Runcie for student achievement and his leadership during Hurricane Irma in 2017, they complained about communications after the Marjory Stoneman Douglas massacre on Feb. 14 and the slow progress of an $800 million bond referendum passed by voters in 2014.
...

“We had to adjust communication on many issues that were stated during the MSD tragedy because staff did not properly vet the information prior to releasing it to the public,” Murray wrote.

Several complained about an increase in negative stories about the district in the media.

“We struggle to share good news and to respond to falsities that are often reported by certain reports or news channels,” Osgood wrote.
...

Runcie’s most glowing review came from Freedman, who represents the Parkland area. She chose not to seek re-election after the tragedy, and Lori Alhadeff, whose daughter Alyssa was killed, will replace her in November.

Freedman didn’t mention the massacre in her review. Her entire evaluation was a note of gratitude to Runcie.

“Words cannot truly express how thankful l am to you for always being there to respond, at any hour of the day, to all the concerns I have brought to your attention throughout the past six years,” Freedman wrote. “I have been extremely fortunate to be able to work with you and I know that you have consistently done your best to take care of all the needs of Broward County Public Schools.”

Parkland school shooter had a friend. She was 13 and lived across the country (with clip)

October 19, 2018

"Before killing 17 people, Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz confided in a 13-year-old girl who lives in Washington State that he felt suicidal and was upset about being bullied.

“He was angry at the school because he got bullied a lot,” the girl told a Broward Sheriff’s Office detective investigating the Feb. 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. “He said he was, like, pushed around and beat up some time. ... He said it made him feel very, like, sad and that he hated the school because of it.”

The girl, now a freshman in high school, said she communicated with Cruz through texts and phone calls, and that they had met late last year on an Instagram page for young people who were hurting themselves or considering suicide. Now 14, she told him she was two years older than she really was, the girl’s mother said in a phone interview Friday, and Cruz told her he was two years younger than his actual age. She said she never knew his last name and they never met face to face. The Miami Herald is not naming her because she is a minor...."

School shooter tormented his mother yet she escorted him to buy an AK-47

October 19, 2018

"Nikolas’ Cruz’s mom thought he was too disturbed to ever live on his own, but she took him to buy an AK-47 anyway, according to documents released Friday by prosecutors in the Parkland school shootings.

An employee from Gun World of South Florida told detectives that an older woman who he thought was Cruz’s grandmother — but likely was his mother, Lynda Cruz — came with him to the Deerfield Beach shop when Cruz bought an AK-47 rifle. He was 18....

Prosecutors, by law, are releasing documents to the defense, including witness statements that also must be made available to the media. Nearly 200 pages released Friday reveal the strange dichotomy of a woman who was afraid of her troubled son yet indulged his passion for guns...."

A mass murderer’s digital trail: Nikolas Cruz dropped crumbs all across the worldwide web

October 26, 2018

"Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz was an avid video gamer who frequently played as much as 15 hours or more a day, his neighbors and others told investigators.

Documents released by prosecutors Friday show authorities were deeply interested in Cruz’s considerable online activities. They quickly discovered group chats in which it became clear Cruz had talked about murder beforehand....

A detective portrayed him in one search warrant as having an “extensive network over the internet.” He had numerous social media accounts as well as financial accounts, some in his dead mother’s name. Cruz may have used his Internet skills to acquire firearms and ammunition, one search warrant says. He also had researched other mass shootings online, and posted deadly threats. He even sent himself text messages about killing people.

“These various accounts have proven to hold evidence of Cruz’s obsession with guns and also his intentions to harm others with gun violence,” a detective wrote in a search warrant application for Cruz’s Google email accounts...."

Predicting the next mass shooter: 'I would say it’s impossible'

Nov. 9, 2018

"In the two deadliest shootings in the U.S. this year, the accused gunman had displayed warning signs before his killing spree.

Nikolas Cruz demonstrated an obsession with guns and was the subject of more than a dozen police visits at home before he allegedly went on a February shooting rampage that left 17 dead at his former high school in Parkland, Florida....

Mental health experts say that, in the absence of expressed credible threats, predicting violent behavior presents a significant challenge.

“The ability to identify an individual’s first violent act is extraordinarily difficult – I would say it’s impossible,’’ said Steven Hoge, a forensic psychiatrist and clinical professor at Columbia University. “Because what mental health professionals bring to the table is the ability to identify risks and triggers to past violent acts and to try to figure out how to mitigate or avoid those incidents in the future.’’

Hoge warned against the common perception that the mental health system should identify dangerous people and get them off the streets. Even though they can begin the process of involuntary commitment when they determine someone to be dangerous, he said, the role of mental health professionals is to provide care.

“Psychiatrists exist in this world to treat people for mental illness,’’ he said. “If there are measures that need to be taken because there are concerns about future violence, that’s in the purview of the police.’’..."

Parkland School Shooting Suspect Nikolas Cruz Attacked Deputy Inside Jail: BSO (with clip)

November 14, 2018

"Parkland school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz is facing new charges after officials say he attacked a detention deputy inside the Broward County Jail, where he is awaiting trial for allegedly killing 17 people in February.

Officials with the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed to NBC 6 that the 20-year-old Cruz attacked a detention deputy inside the facility Tuesday evening just before 6 p.m. The deputy refused medical treatment and Cruz was evaluated by medical staff but had minor injuries that didn't require medical treatment, officials said.

According to an arrest report, Cruz struck the deputy in the face following a verbal disagreement before grabbing hold of the deputy's stun gun - which went off during the fight.

The verbal disagreement started when the deputy told Cruz to stop dragging his sandals on the ground and Cruz gave him the middle finger, the report said.

Survelliance video showed Cruz striking the deputy several more times, according to the report, before the deputy grabbed the stun gun back and hit Cruz with it. Cruz eventually got off the deputy and was placed under arrest...."

Jaime Guttenberg died in the Parkland school shooting. Now her parents are suing the FBI

November 13, 2018

"Fred Guttenberg was picking out a casket for his slain 14-year-old daughter Jaime Guttenberg when an FBI agent called him to say the bureau could have prevented the school shooting that left her dead, according to a lawsuit filed in Miami federal court Tuesday.

Jaime Guttenberg was killed along with 16 other people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Feb. 14, even though the FBI had been warned about the shooter, Nikolas Cruz, just a month before.

“Are you telling me that if the FBI did not make a mistake and did their job a month sooner, my daughter would still be alive today?” Fred Guttenberg asked, according to the lawsuit.

“I’m afraid so, sir,” the unnamed agent is said to have replied.

Now, Guttenberg and his wife, Jennifer, are suing the United States government for negligence, saying the FBI missed crucial evidence that could have prevented the deadly attack and the murder of their daughter, a freshman who loved gymnastics and dancing. The suit claims damages but does not state a monetary amount sought....

Broward County, BSO and the Broward school board are also being sued by parents of the dead and students who survived the attack...."

More than 30 people didn't report disturbing behavior by Nikolas Cruz before Parkland massacre

November 13, 2018

"More than 30 people knew about disturbing behavior by Nikolas Cruz, including displaying guns, threatening to murder his mother and killing animals, but never reported it until after he committed the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

“It’s very troubling behavior, and in many cases it probably should have caused them to report what they heard, saw or learned,” said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, chairman of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission, which opened four days of hearings Tuesday at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. “But for a variety of reasons they did not.”

Two students did report Cruz’s disturbing and threatening behavior but said they were brushed off by the school’s administration, according to testimony Tuesday to the commission. A detailed tip to the FBI also went unheeded, and on Tuesday, the parents of one of the murdered students sued the U.S. government over the FBI’s admitted failure.

In the years before the massacre, Cruz reportedly killed a duck with a tire iron, shot squirrels with a pellet gun, killed frogs and decapitated a bird, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Detective Chris Lyons said in a presentation to the commission, based on statements from students, neighbors and co-workers of Cruz and his mother. Cruz displayed a photo to a student of a decapitated cat...."

FBI Will Upgrade Tipline, Add Staff After Missing Warnings About Parkland School Shooter

The FBI plans to hire more staff and implement technology upgrades to its public tipline after mishandling two warnings that confessed Parkland killer Nikolas Cruz might shoot up a school.

An FBI director explained the changes in a two-page letter to the state commission investigating the Feb. 14 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. The letter was sent in lieu of offering in-person testimonybefore the commission, as chair and Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri requested months ago.

Nikolas Cruz’s lawyers want jail records kept private

"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. —
Confessed Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz walked into court with disheveled reddish-brown hair, wearing a red jail jumpsuit and handcuffs. He sat between his two attorneys and kept his head down.

The judge began by reviewing numerous defense motions requesting information from prosecutors, mostly from Cruz’s social media accounts and other possible crime scene reports. Prosecutors have either already turned over the information or are still in the process of collecting it.

Defense lawyers also asked the judge to keep jail records, that they believe are similar to medical records, sealed to protect his privacy. They are from daily observation reports done by corrections officers since Cruz is on suicide watch and listed as having an “altered mental state.”...

The judge did not immediately rule on the request. Cruz faces the death penalty if convicted of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people and wounded 17 others.

The next status hearing for Nikolas Cruz will be Jan. 8."
