Judge Calls Out Parkland Defense for Laughing and Flipping the Bird in Court

Nov 1, 2022
Judge Elizabeth Scherer called out Parkland shooter's defense table for their behavior during the trial. "When these people are upset about specific things that have gone on from that table, like shooting the middle finger up at this court and laughing and joking," the judge said.
Thank you, SeesSeas, for your continuous contributions to this discussion. I did not follow the trial as much as some here but read the thread almost daily. I appreciated your sharing many local reports during the trial. After a school shooting in Oakland County, Michigan almost a year ago, I felt obligated to follow that case more closely and lost some interest in the Parkland case over the past year. I watched some parts of the trial and closing arguments but mostly kept up by reading this discussion. Thanks to all of you who kept this discussion going. I will watch the remaining victim impact statements and the sentencing tomorrow. I'm not a proponent of the death penalty, and it's not an option in Michigan, but I would not have had a problem sentencing this evil young man to death.

Judge accuses defense attorney of threatening her children, dismisses him

Scherer ripped into Cruz's team of public defenders after they asked her again to tamp down the animosity they're feeling from victims' family members.

Scherer said the majority of the comments made Tuesday were appropriate, and that the best course of action was to ignore any that weren't.

"Sit down and move on," she said.

The answer didn't sit right with Chief Assistant Public Defender David Wheeler.

"For them to comment on my children is highly improper — " Wheeler said, before Scherer cut him off. She said she doesn't remember any statements about the defense attorney's children.

"If they were talking about your children, you would definitely notice it," Wheeler said.

After a split-second pause, Scherer dismissed Wheeler, her voice rising as he walked to the back of the courtroom.

"To try to threaten my children, and bring up my children, is inappropriate," she said. Wheeler's boss, Gordon Weekes, tried to defend the attorney but was shot down just as quickly.

Parkland Judge Dismisses Chief Assistant Public Defender for Bringing Up Her Kids

"Go sit down!": Parkland Judge Elizabeth Scherer reprimanded chief assistant public defender David Wheeler and dismissed him after he brought up her children. "To try to threaten my children and bring up my children is inappropriate," the judge said.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Parents, wives, children and siblings of the 17 people murdered by Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz finally got their chance after almost five years to verbally thrash him face-to-face — and those who accepted the opportunity didn’t waste it.

More will get their chance Wednesday on the second day of a hearing that will end with Cruz formally sentenced to life without parole for the Valentine’s Day 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in suburban Fort Lauderdale.

Cruz, shackled and wearing a red jail jumpsuit, stared at Tuesday’s speakers, but showed little emotion.

Simply put Cruz was "out if it" the impact statements are more for the victims than anything. He does not have the capacity to care. Just to be clear there is no possibility of parole here for any reason right. All these sentences are consecutive right? That would be the real travesty if this guy ever got out of prison.

I wonder if there will be anymore fireworks today!

My opinion is no. Again many will disagree but having watched a few commentators' opinions I don't think the happenings yesterday played that well in general...that said...some sure defended the judge. I did not see some of the most vocal from media reports speaking yesterday so they may come up today. It is possible for sure.

I wasn't thinking about that as much as wondering if the Judge will go off on NC like she did the defense team yesterday. Some judges simply sentence the perp without much to say while others tend to tell the perp exactly what they think

If you thought Judge Scherer's courtroom antics were bad, check out this Detroit judge who is known for her courtroom outbursts.

Hopefully everyone just lets the victims have their say and NC gets sentenced and its done.

I honestly don't know what I would say if my child had been one of those killed. I might not say anything.

He will be sentenced to life without parole on each murder. Whether they are consecutive or concurrent will be up to the judge. But I am pretty sure they will be consecutive. The only way he could get out is if his sentences are commuted or he is pardoned. I don't see that ever happening. I suppose its possible an appeals court some how could say LWOP is unconstitutional, but who knows.

I expect the judge to have some choice words for him...I assume there is no one to speak on his behalf during this impact phase...as usual he will just sit and be led away to be gone foreever.

Ms. Fuentes was excellent...these statements today really going after him and showing what he did to their lives are making a big impact on me. Such strength to get up there like that and look him in the eye. I hope it helps them to continue recovering.

10-minute recess. Courtroom doesn't seem as tense as yesterday. I thought there would be more people in the courtroom for the sentencing, but there seem to be fewer in attendance than yesterday.

Oh I’m familiar with Judge Vonda! She was out of control! They did an expose about her coming in late:leaving early and delaying proceedings routinely. Theres a tense interview with her and a journalist where she tried to defend her actions and it’s clear she was just doing whatever she wanted! She’s doing something with Vinnie Politan now. She’s retired.

ETA: She does give good sentencing remarks! I doubt this judge will.

Sadly I don’t think these folks will ever recover from this horrible crime, but they just have found a way to move forward, which was hard enough.

I like how this speaker is highlighting all the mistakes of the school and law enforcement that led to the ability for Cruz to do what he did. He warned...no one listened...law enforcement should have charged in and killed him. I would be more angry at them than anyone.

so it is normal to attack attorneys, the court and jurors? Wow.

One of the victims also attacked one of the Sandy Hook parents. It's been nuts.
