I don't understand how the kids were left with her, it seems clear she was completely out of control, and I don't see how her husband couldn't have known. I also have an issue with this being a DP case.

Whatever happens with the trial, I think she's end up in a mental health facility for the rest of her life, whether that's in the prison itself or a secured facility, so perhaps the trial is a formality they need to ensure she remains behind bars.
