She had no idea her mother would call police and request they check the home. I think she put those up to look like business as usual for anyone else that came by...gone to NYC...she was getting everything really for PS to return and find all of them. I do think she intended to kill herself too even though she had more than enough time to do it. If her mother had not called the plan probably would have worked.

I agree that the mother's call for a wellness check changed the outcome JS planned. However, I don't think she really was going to commit suicide. Her goal was to hurt JS and be around to see the horror she created.

My latest theory is that this whole thing was all about control.

JS said that she shot BS in the car because he told her to put the gun away and threatened to hit her if she didn't. She never says why she pulled it out in the first place.

IMO she pulled the gun out to make him shut up and do whatever she said. She was not going to kill him, just scare and control him (she was going to kill him later on, at home). But she was unable to control him and it pushed her over the edge.

She had an outburst in court because she wasn't able to control the testimony coming from the stand.

After she was caught, she suggested that she should just be able to pay a fine for killing the children. Even though she said it was the worst thing she'd ever done and even though she'd acknowledged how much it would upset PS, she still thought SHE should be the one to decide/control the consequences of her actions.

The scowl on her face, the way she stares down each witness is also an attempt to control them.

Exhibiting the TD symptoms during the videotape of her being transferred to the jail was an attempt to control our perception of events. Note how she looks RIGHT INTO THE CAMERA and then grimaces and opens her eyes real wide. I watched that tape about 4 times and I cannot see her face doing that at any other time.

Also she tried to control her psychiatrist. She continued to drink against his orders until she wore him down and was allowed 2 drinks a day.

I am eagerly awaiting the testimony tomorrow. So far, all we really know about JS' treatment by her psychiatrist who basically could speak to her medications, desire for drugs and alcohol, and his perceptions of her general risk of suicide.

I very much want to hear from JS's therapist, who had a very different relationship with her, and PS.

I have a feeling that, as with the psychiatrist, there will be a great deal of testimony that will help the prosecution as well as the defense.

I would also like to hear from a mental health professional who did a work-up on JS prior to trial. Was she given such tests as an MMPI? Does this person have a diagnosis that will be discussed in detail?

Someone will have to state that she is legally insane.

I was reading up on her military service. 10 years in the US Army, working in Military Intelligence. Apparently it's rare for a woman to be an interrogator. According to the job description it's male only. I wonder how those 'mind games' affected her. It was sad to hear that she struggled with mental illness while in the Army but was afraid to tell anyone. This is something the military really needs to address, as seen in the recent mass shootings.

Detective: Julie...what do you think should happen?

JS: Probably a bonus...pay to stay away from jail.
*******************************************
and then...email from PS to JS's doc, on the night she was in the car accident -- when she conveniently got whisked out of ER before the officer got there to order a blood test:
"No problems @ ER"

What Julie used to getting "rescued" from her messes???

I'm reviewing the Fri. morning trial that I missed -- can't quite figure out why the defense called the other car-pool Mom. It seemed to play right into the State's hands -- to show that JS was competent enough to negotiate Tampa traffic during rush-hour, and to show that JS could get out of bed to do so.

ETA: all defense did with Mrs. Shah was make the point that JS didn't pick up the kids on the day after she murdered her children...well, duh!

I kinda think the Defense should have encouraged JS to wear something softer, more feminine -- maybe a sweater in a pastel or white -- where she would look a bit fragile, maybe gain a little sympathy from jury. In that grey blazer, she looks like a school marm or a librarian -- not a figure that most jurors would identify with or feel sympathy for.

Hmmm...once again, an issue with the stipulation...

...is she not wanting to admit her kids are dead?

...or is this something to do with her competency to stand trial?

Eldred Solomon -- Clinical Psychologist, called to stand. Also holds her psychology degrees from U of S. Fla

Dr. Solomon says she has a practice where she works with people w/ serious mental illness; has been licensed since 1990. She works a lot with people with childhood trauma. She considers biological issues as well as psychological (she was a biology teacher and textbook writer for a number of years)

Dr. Solomon said she has been doing forensic psychology, providing a number of evaluations for the court, as well as providing evaluations for defense and for the state.

Her evaluations have included several insanity evals

She's testified in court an estimated 20 times

In addition to writing biology textbooks, she's published many articles in journals in the psychology field. Also wrote a chapter on a series of volumes on Criminal Psychology. Her chapter had to do with biological origins of mental illness, and impact of childhood trauma.

On the day JS was arrested, Dr. Solomon called to come do an eval. However, JS was taken to Tampa Gen for detox. So, Dr. Solomon, and Defense attorney went to the hospital on Sat. evening (delayed due to Gasparilla day) to see her.
