After their marriage, PS & JS lived together in Arizona, renting a house in town, off the base. Prior to their marriage, JS told PS about being sexually abused as a child. Prior to their marriage, PS did not see any signs of depression, but he said they were not together very much. After their marriage, when they were living together, he noted she had lower energy, not as interested in physical activities (volleyball, rollerblading, walking) that they'd engaged in previously.

PS did not have prior experience with living with a person with mental illness. As an officer, he did have some basic training in suicide prevention.

JS decided to leave the military in 1993. PS had been restationed to Germany, JS was in Arizona.

After Julie left Army, she moved to Germany. They shared an apartment that was the top floor of another military family's house.

Julie and Parker both wanted to have children. Their first child, Calyx, was born in 1994, in Germany. As a first-time mother, Parker thought Julie was a good mother. He was there for the birth. His mother came to Germany at that time, and his father shortly afterwards, but they weren't living there permanently. During this time, Patrick was traveling a lot, up to 57 days at a time. They did not have a Nanny at this time. Julie was the primary caregiver.

They were re-stationed to a different town in Germany. Julie continued as the primary caregiver for Calyx, but they also had a Nanny. JS became self-employed in making crafts, which became a business.

They were then stationed in Kansas. PS was studying military science. They were there for a year. Family visited, but no one lived there full-time. In Kansas, JS had a craft booth, which made some money, which she could keep for herself. Parker paid the household bills with his Army salary.

They were then stationed in Hawaii for about 3 years. PS's mother, after his father passed away, moved to Hawaii to be closer to the grandkids. This was in the last year of their tour in Hawaii. She lived in a condo that was about 20 minutes from their residence. Calyx was from age 3 to 6 during this time. Beau was born in Hawaii in 1997.
