UPDATED: 11-year-old arrested in fatal shooting

if the kid thought that the gun was unloaded when he fired it im not sure what i think the proper punishment should be. very sad regardless.

"Around 7 p.m., Jadon and Carter “began play wrestling in an attempt to see if the family dog would respond to Jadon attacking Carter,” the statement reads.

“After this, Carter went and retrieved a pistol from his parent’s room, removed the magazine and pointed it at Jadon,” CCSO stated.

The gun discharged, killing Jadon, deputies say."

The attempted cover up makes no sense, imho.
If he thought it was unloaded call 911 and tell the truth.

do you remember when you were around that age and REALLY messed up? ie you broke something expensive while fooling around etc... i can remember that feeling of panic and thinking up some pretty stupid plans to try to stay out of trouble. this could be an extreme version of that.

idk but hopefully they can get the true story from the brother that was there (not sure if he witnessed the shooting but he took part in the cover up)

I agree that he probably panicked and didn't know what to do. Very sad. People in America need to leave their guns where kids can't get them, and/or teach them proper gun safety.

Wonder if there was an Alexa or a Family Security Camera in the toon?

.@ColumbiaSheriff tells me it’s exploring whether 11-year-old's parents will face charges related to gun they say the boy found in unlocked drawer. The boy was arrested on manslaughter charge after shooting & killing his 14-year-old friend (pic below) https://bit.ly/2Sqc65s

I've seen parents charged with something like "leaving a loaded firearm in an unguarded place within reach of a minor...." or something like that, in other cases. I definitely think they should be charged. I don't know whether Florida has such statutes or not.
If the gun had been locked in a safe, or if the gun had a trigger-guard, that child would have been alive today, and the other child would have learned a very important lesson. He may indeed go to some sort of jail or other facility, and should, IMO.
One more precious child gone due to improper gun storage. I can understand protecting your house, absolutely -- how difficult is it to remove the guard when you have an intruder and need to shoot?
Damm.

Disturbingly, my middle daughter works as an off-shift supervisor at the place where most of the involved adults are employed and knows all the key players. She shared some distressing details about these kids' living situations. AND another co-worker (unrelated to this incident) took her life over the holidays.

About time parents get charged for not keeping guns safely locked away!

Damn right the parents should be charged. How many times do we see young kids being shot by siblings etc.

Too many idiots own guns and leave them out in the open, it's such a scary thought. Glad guns are largely illegal here

That is so hard to hear -- maybe it's a tuff place for children to grow up safely, and there might also be influences from other neighborhoods. I googled the neighborhood and it looked like it was a nice one probably about 20 or so years ago. Some houses and yards were better-kept than others -- just like in any neighborhood. It didn't really look like a dangerous area, but it may be that some of the residents are having a harder time than others.
Thanks for helping us understand a little more about this tragedy. It always helps us know a bit more about the circumstances surrounding sad situations.

Did I get this right. The 13 yr. old brother had a live-in girlfriend?

Hmmm, would the charge of "failure to safely store..." against the adults be any different if Carter had gone into the backyard and shot a bullet into the ground with no one else around, instead of into his good friend?
If not, then the law needs to be changed, or the couple should be given a harsher charge.
Guns, guns, guns.

And whose idea was it it plant the knife evidence at the scene afterwards? The two Palm brothers seem to be fairly sophisticated already and headed down a bad path... Sad and scary for them and those around them, IMO. SMH
