Deputies: Missing 7-year-old with autism found dead in lake was living in unsafe conditions

The report said the three children shared a small bedroom with a dirty mattress on the floor and that both the refrigerator and bathroom were locked shut.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office released a report that details the disturbing conditions the child and his two other siblings were living in.

Deputies contacted DCF, who deemed the house unsafe and moved the two other children into a hotel with their mom.

At this point, the parents are not facing any charges in this case.

ETA - I had posted that I was thoroughly confused at why deputies and DCF would put the other children in a hotel room with the mother due to locks on the fridge and bathroom. That seemed abusive to me. However, the article below says that is advised for parent with children on the spectrum as they could drown in the bathtub in only a few inches of water while the parents slept. That was from an autism disorder specialist who knows more than I do on the subject. I learned something new today.
