Finally we're getting somewhere!

The more we learn about this perp, he is definitely a good candidate for life without the possibility of parole.
Sounds like the murder was a 'thrill kill' and exciting for him.
His own mother.
I am gobsmacked that there are people supporting and defending him.
Imo.

He did not kill the baby. If he had, I would have agreed, zero potential for rehabilitation.

Maybe I feel sorry for the kid. I empathize with his plight, of having a "new father" setting into a space, and he probably felt displaced. And that cringe picture, of him having to touch his mother's pregnant belly next to his stepfather, with their hands on her belly. That is just out to lunch.

I think he felt completely betrayed by his mother. And we don't know anything about their relationship.

He reminds me of Edmund Kemper, a serial killer, from Helena, MT, who was horribly abused by his mother. He probably would have been normal if his mother hadn't been so sick.

Although, that being said, Edmund Kemper did become a serial rapist killer, probably due to his issues with his mother.

Probably right, this kid is a ticking bomb. But, at least he didn't kill the baby.

Yes, I get what you're saying ; but again it's just imo-- the acts of taking those pics and the violence of the murder make me think I could never trust him again.
Chilled to the marrow over this case.
Even if she was partial to the stepdad or too strict or whatever...
Eeek !
Omo.

Yes, that's the one. Perhaps he did have a thing for his mother?

I am not sure that it was a classical Oedipal complex, but too many things happened at the same time. A new husband, moving to a small apartment, and mom gets pregnant. Maybe the proximity to the couple triggered something in a boy going through puberty? Now, this "pink" photo was meant to look beautiful (like two guardian angels around the expectant mom), but God knows how a 13-year-old with own issues processed it? And then, the baby is born and mom is breastfeeding. I think that initially Derek was just close to mom, and she was a loving mom, but he couldn't process all the changes in life, being too immature. Plus, I am not sure that his friend didn't instigate him. (What normal friend would require a photo that Rosa sent?) Maybe it was a homicidal group, and Rosa was manipulated, or at least, not stopped by some "friend"? There are articles about such groups, in Germany and other countries. Some push kids to suicide, some might encourage homicide as well. The photos make me wonder.

Many in society want to believe that a 13-year-old couldn't be so evil, must have something good inside that can mean rehabilitation is possible.

It's too terrifying to think that maybe a 13-year-old could be beyond help, capable of anything, yet going to school with all of the other kids.

We (many in society) also want to think, his parents must have made a mistake somewhere that we wouldn't make with our own kids. It can't be all his own fault. And so we defend him.

And we often want to believe the best of others, especially young people, and give them the benefit of the doubt. That's why so many people, even those who do the worst, have a chance at parole... not saying I agree, but that's our justice system.

Ted Bundy is suspected, never proven, of killing an 8 year old girl when he was a teenager.

I have no doubt that he should be in jail, and I doubt he is safe for society. Normal kids don't kill their mother.

Edmund Kemper, the serial killer I mentioned previously, killed both of his grandparents at age 15. And was let out at age 21, when he then began his serial killing spree. Ended when he killed his mother, and turned himself in. He was profiled by the FBI in "Manhunter".
