FL - Five killed, 8 wounded in shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport, 6 Jan 2017

I was just going to post a similar question. I had no idea.

Apparently, it is legal as long as they are not in the same container. Depends on the airport how strict they are at TSA.

BUT....I can't be an ounce over and have to put a shoe in my kids' bag. SMH

Someone on one of the news stations speculated this could be someone who was angered by someone on the plane.

I wonder if the shooter had been drinking alcohol on the plane?

Per FOX most TSA agents do not even check if weapon is licensed/legal. They just check to make sure weapon is not loaded.

He ran out of ammo, threw his gun on the ground, and then laid down spread eagle waiting for LE to arrest him.

Good grief.

I've seen that reported but also that he was in the middle of reloading when police apprehended him.

So let me get this straight, you can check in weapon and ammo..legally.

Oh yes, you can. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transporting-firearms-and-ammunition
"Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container and transported as checked baggage only. Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock."
and
"Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).
Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm."

On the flip side, a highly qualified Captain cannot board his/her plane with any liquids over 100ml!

Work that nonsense out! :gaah:

Yes but not loaded, he went in the bathroom after picking up his baggage and loaded it there and came out shooting.

Spare a thought for the passengers sat on those planes on the runway waiting to take off. Pilots are calling in saying the "bathrooms are full" plus they're low on refreshments.

That coupled with some pilots will be hitting the problem soon whereby they're over their allotted times on duty so won't be able to complete the flight which will mean pilots on rest days will be called in.

What a complete mess.

Well, now they have the sheriff on the phone and he just said the officers arrived within a few seconds of the shots being fired and he dropped his weapon.

So lying down spread eagle is inaccurate.

I believe you have to "declare" the weapon and possibly fill out a special form and sometimes the airlines make you go to a special little office to pick up your baggage. There are rules with how to travel with weapons and ammo and they make you use a hard case like a metal gun case.

So with the strict rules this tells me that he must not have set off any red flags at the airport he left from. The airport personnel probably would not have let him check in the weapon if he showed signs of being crazy.

So it makes me wonder if he had planned this or someone or some news he got on the flight set him off.

I have sat on the tarmac so long that the crew went over the time allotted for their shifts. We had to return to the terminal and await a new crew.

I am sending loads of patience to everyone at the airport, plus all their loved ones who are worried about them.

5 Dead, 8 Injured After Shooting At Fort Lauderdale Airport In Florida

http://www.ndtv.com/world-news/shot...rt-in-florida-several-victims-reports-1646026

Lee said the gunman said nothing as he "went up and down the carousels of the baggage claim, shooting through luggage to get at people that were hiding."

Then the gunman threw down his weapon and lay spread-eagle on the ground until he was taken into custody, Lea said.

Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida identified the gunman as Esteban Santiago and said that he was carrying a military ID, but that it was unclear whether it was his.

A witness told MSNBC that the gunman was a "slender man' who was wearing a Star Wars T-shirt.

The gunman, who appeared to be in his 20s, did not speak before or during the attack, John Schlicher said.

Yes. The firearm has to be in a locked case separate from the ammunition.

My gut says this. Airline travel is SO stressful because we're treated like cargo. Everyone's nerves are frayed. There isn't even in flight entertainment or snacks for free anymore. Small things that could ease everyone's frayed nerves. I've thought for some time that all it takes is one angry individual to get bored and then triggered and bam, incident. It happens in-flight a lot, it's just usually non-violent and easily contained. Frustrating :(

FBI is going to be the lead agency.

Sheriff said it appears he's a home-grown extremist.
