FL - Five killed, 8 wounded in shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport, 6 Jan 2017

  • #201
The gunman was identified as Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, 26, who had active-duty military identification on him and was born in New Jersey, law enforcement sources told CBS News.

Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida said it was unclear whether the military ID was the gunman’s.

Whoa.

There is going to be a history, that in hindsight, predicts dangerous behavior, imo.

Sad day for travelers. :(

Oh yes, you can. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transporting-firearms-and-ammunition
"Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container and transported as checked baggage only. Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock."
and
"Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).
Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm."

On the flip side, a highly qualified Captain cannot board his/her plane with any liquids over 100ml!

Work that nonsense out! :gaah:

But what does it matter? A person could walk up to baggage claim with a loaded gun. Or walk into a mall. Or the large crowd of people waiting to go through security at Disneyland. Or wherever.

I don't see that being able to put a gun into a checked bag really makes a difference. They can't access it on the plane. Or past the security gates.

FBI is going to be the lead agency.

Sheriff sad it appears he's a home-grown extremist.

Personal opinion: I'm doubting this. Why would he wait till he landed in Ft Lauderdale? He would have had the same opportunity in Alaska. JMO, will see what plays out.

Wait, what? Home-grown extremist? I thought this was turning out to be "flight rage."

http://miami.cbslocal.com/2017/01/06/sen-bill-nelson-identifies-suspected-fll-gunman/

Law enforcement said Esteban-Ruiz was found with an active military ID and is an American citizen. Previous known addresses include Penuelas, Puerto Rico and Anchorage, Alaska. He was born in New Jersey.

Santiago also has a record for minor traffic violations and was evicted in 2015 for not paying rent.

I am watching CBS and they just said Air Canada is denying having any passenger flying into Ft. Lauderdale with a checked gun.

"Flight rage" was pure speculation.

The appearance of him being a home-grown extremist is what the sheriff just said via phone on local news.

Yes. The firearm has to be in a locked case separate from the ammunition.

My gut says this. Airline travel is SO stressful because we're treated like cargo. Everyone's nerves are frayed. There isn't even in flight entertainment or snacks for free anymore. Small things that could ease everyone's frayed nerves. I've thought for some time that all it takes is one angry individual to get bored and then triggered and bam, incident. It happens in-flight a lot, it's just usually non-violent and easily contained. Frustrating :(

Long flight from Alaska,I bet you he was drinking on the flight.Air rage.

I wonder if he didn't claim it. Their x-ray should've picked it up unless they weren't paying attention.

It had to have been. Air Canada said all their passengers were accounted for.

Family confirms this is Esteban Santiago, the alleged Fort Lauderdale Airport shooter

Air Canada is saying they have no record of a passenger by that name nor a passenger with a checked gun.

Reporter checked flights originating from Minneapolis and the only one was Delta.

The shooter, described as wearing as slender, about 5-foot-7 and wearing a blue tee-shirt, did not say a word during the incident, calmly opening fire as he strolled among passengers at a baggage carousel in Terminal 3, which services Delta flights.

Mark Lea, the witness among the passengers, told MSNBC the gunman was "just randomly shooting people" with a 9 mm pistol and only stopped after emptying about three magazines of bullets.

"He wasn't targeting anyone particular," he said.

Another witness, John Schicher, told MSNBC the shooter appeared to be wearing a blue Star Wars T-shirt.
