P: Number 5, can a killer look like a granny?
Gotta love Georgia….she knows what the defense has done dressing Donna like that (headphones and all) and wants to get that in up front!

Watch Donna take those headphones off after a while as they will become annoying to her….imo

I don’t have anything to base it on but my gut. I would have harder time believing a well put together grandmother committed a crime than someone frumpy with unkempt hair.

Gotta love Georgia…
Chief Assistant State Attorney Georgia Cappleman during voir dire session of prospective jurors
  • Georgia Cappleman is having a moment of levity. Joshua Zelman got the joke but Donna Adelson is not having any of it!
  • Georgia Cappleman pursued her higher education at Florida State University, earning her Doctor of Law (JD) from the FSU College of Law in 2001, then started legal career in 2001 at the State Attorney’s Office as a Deputy Assistant State Attorney
  • Georgia Cappleman climbed the ranks over 24 years while prosecuting serious crimes such as sexual assault and homicide

DA better be careful - those headphones may damage her abnormally narrow ear canals/sarc

Thinking Opening Statements may get pushed - this Def Atty is still going and it is almost 3 pm already. Openings are 45 mins each, so 1.5 hours total - jury needs to be picked by 3:00 IMHO

When Judge Everett said they weren't starting until 11:00 this morning, I was pretty sure there wouldn't be time for opening statements today. Once they pick the jury he'll probably give them the initial instructions and whatnot and send them home till tomorrow.

Josh Zelman now up to question the jurors for the defense.Photo from earlier courtesy of Pool Photographer Alicia Devine.Zelman is showing something on the screen. Appears to be an older photo od Donna Adelson.

2:48 p.m.: Defense spends significant time questioning jurors about snitches

The defense asked just about every potential juror in the box how they feel about “jailhouse snitches.”

Attorney Zelman asked them to rate it on a scale 1-10 with 1 being unfair and 10 being fair when the prosecution offers an informant a deal.

The most common answer was 5, but answers varied from 4-7.

This will be a key point for the defense because they want the judge to prevent the prosecution from bringing in evidence from a “jailhouse snitch” who interacted with Donna Adelson at the Leon County jail.

Def Atty Zelman has not impressed me thus far

His questions sounded like he was teaching an into to criminal law class—- if I were a juror my mind would be mush, bored, antsy, irritated…

I wonder why. Is she not permitted hearing aids?
Speculation on my part according to resources: Courtrooms often provide assistive listening devices like headphones connected to systems such as hearing loops or FM systems in order to comply with ADA. These systems amplify audio directly from microphones used by the judge, counsels, or witnesses to ensure clarity in a complex environment.

Also, there is no record (that I could locate) that the defendant uses hearing aids in her daily life. In addition, would they [hearing aids] be compatible with the courtroom’s assistive listening system, headphones provided by the court would be practical alternative for defendant to hear proceedings clearly. The defendant has been incarcerated since Nov. 2023, and one of the complaints made by her defense reported has been challenges with medical care.

IIRC at a hearing when Donna was complaining about several items, one was something about her smaller ear canals and wax builds up. She normally went to a special doctor according to her and the jail had no such service available to her.

Although she may have some hearing problem, during all the times she has been in court she has never worn headphones. She seems have no trouble hearing her attorneys quietly whispering in her ear. Today was the first time she had them on with her new outfit which may have looked like a prop.

There was an interesting post on the Dan Markel subreddit today, it discussed the potential claims DA’s defense may try to bring up about that jailhouse informant. It appears like that person has gotten some pretty sweet deals despite multiple felonies and violating probation. JMOO
