His mother needs to be charged ASAP. As a deputy, she knows to keep her weapons secured.
IMO.
They aren't releasing some information right now. But did say they have no reason at this time to do what you said.
It could have been under lock and key and he stole from his mother they key or combination.

LE gave him commands and he wouldn't put the weapon down. So he was shot at. He is in the hospital.

Phoenix is a polysci student at FSU and gave statements to the student newspaper back in January when they were covering protests over Trump

“These people are usually pretty entertaining, usually not for good reasons,” Phoenix Ikner, a political science major, said. “I think it’s a little too late, he’s [Trump] already going to be inaugurated on Jan. 20 and there’s not really much you can do unless you outright revolt, and I don’t think anyone wants that.”

agree, way too soon to know if she should face any consequences for her son's actions. We don't know how he came to access the weapon and so, cannot know if she was negligent in any way. My understanding is she is an 18 year veteran law enforcement officer and well respected in that field. I'll wait for more info before deciding my thoughts on any prosecution of his mother.

I'm a parent in the US, kids in school. I don't have fear when they go off to school.
Ironically, it appears in some studies, Americans have less fear of violence in their communities than Irish, French, Belgians, Koreans, Australians, NZ, Italians.

That's really interesting, thank you ☺️

If he's over 18 I don't see how she could be charged.
Eta... Above post states he is 20.

I’m in the US and fear for my young grandkids every day that they attend school, shopping or go anywhere.

So, that’s every day.
I’ve just learned to live with it.

From the conference:

The suspect was also a "long-standing member" of the Leon County Sheriff's Office's Youth Advisory Council, McNeil said.

He was "engaged in a number of training programs that we have," the sheriff said, adding, "Not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons."

Yesterday was 18 years since the Virginia Tech shooting, 32 lost souls and 17 injured.

My heart goes out to the community, it forever changes you.

You're not in school, your kids are. I would think that a huge portion of America's children suffer from PTSD related to the psychological trauma of knowing every day they could be shot and no one is really doing anything about it. Arming teachers or restricting entry into schools is like treating an illness when getting a vaccine would have prevented you from getting ill in the first place.

Thoughts and prayers are useless when it comes to killing children. It's not like being in a car accident where your friend dies from injuries sustained. Intellectually, children know that a car accident truly is an accident. They also know that killing children in school is not. When they are a certain age, like in their late teens, they have a tendency to speak out about the violence and many are derided as libs or leftists and treated with distain. Perfect example is David Hogg. What's worse there's a whole cottage industry of pundits who consider some of these slaughters as a lie, something made up, that the parents are paid actors, etc.

It always appears at least from my perspective that the government cares little about school shootings and their priority is to ensure that no extraordinary regulations will restrict owning a gun in the US. Children are aware that they are collateral damage when it comes to guns. What a way to grow up.

"This event is tragic in more ways than you people in the audience could ever fathom from a law enforcement perspective," McNeil said. "But I will tell you this, we will make sure that we do everything we can to prosecute and make sure that we send a message to folks that this will never be tolerated here in Leon County, and I dare say, across this state and across this nation."

I talk to my children all the time. We talk about fears and life and challenges. They don't say they are afraid of school shootings. You know what kids fear? The same things we feared: bullies that push them or punch, kids that take their things. They worry about the stress of school, increase in work and deadlines, homework, talking in class. My children have never said anything about fear of a shooter. And why would they fear that more than anything else?

You're right, and I let my anger get the best of me. We've seen parents leave their weapons unsecured many times before, and have lost adults and children due to that, so that was what ran through my head right away.
Apologies for rushing to judgement.
IMO.
