I wonder: Why do I always hear about people in small towns who don't lock their doors--yet have enough guns under their pillow to equip a small army? I always hear about how ~safe~ it is where they live but also about how they have 574773744 guns to protect themselves. It is so odd.

I LOVE that post!!!!
"Firearms create a more "polite" society".
That's the way I was raised here in Arizona. Phoenix has it's "issues", along with Tucson (metropolises with a lot of non-Arizonans), but for the most part, it's ~safe~. I'm originally from Scottsdale but moved to the boonies 24 years ago.
Some people see a firearm and think "Fear" (my son's GF recently from San Diego has this mindset), some people see a firearm and think "safety" (that's where I am), and others see a firearm and go all macho stupid (like people who move here from highly prohibitive gun law states).
Seriously, my BF has a sidearm for every day of the week and holidays.
In the "country" you use different firearms for different reason. So, it's easy to have several, and then some you acquire from friends or relatives that pass. Some are sentimental, I have a Jennings #48 .380 auto that was used by a dear friend when he was in the OSS, a "boot gun" Davis Derringer DM .22 cal .22 mag that he carried, a 12 gauge shot gun he thought I "needed", and a Llama Comanche .357 mag that he gave me just cause it had too much recoil for him in his old age. I carry a S & W .357 mag every time I leave my property, just habit, like taking your cell phone. (which I refuse to get!)
Everyone's idea of firearms are usually based on the "culture" they are raised in. That could run the gamut of one of "fear and trauma" to "safety and security". I look at my fire arms as "tools" to get things done, whether to put down an animal in terminal pain or trauma, dispatch a varmint, getting a steer or pig ready for the freezer, hunting, or just blow off some steam at a non-breathing target.
It's all in the eyes of the beholder. JMO.
