Deric Young, 25, was taken into custody Tuesday and is facing charges for murder and aggravated child abuse, according to a TPD press release.(Leon County Jail)
Young’s arrest affidavit, obtained Wednesday by WCTV, revealed details from the investigation, including how Young broke down in tears just moments before admitting to investigators that he repeatedly punched the baby.

An autopsy showed that the child “had suffered severe injuries, including multiple strikes to the head with a closed fist that ultimately caused the child’s death,” according to police.

Ky’meria is survived by her twin brother, who was also in the room at the time of the alleged abuse but was unharmed

Before the 1-year-old’s death, the child had been left in the care of the 25-year-old Tallahassee man, per court documents. He is the boyfriend of a woman hired to babysit the child the night before the incident, and he was there Monday when authorities arrived and found the girl unresponsive.

“Detectives learned the child was left in the care of Young, the boyfriend of the woman hired to watch the child, the night before the incident occurred,” police said. “Detectives developed probable cause.”

Young told police he had been smoking cannabis while tending the child, the Tallahassee Democrat reported citing affidavit. “When I smoke, I want to play,”

Although the 25-year-old did not appear in court Thursday morning, a judge proceeded with the hearing, denying bond for Young. He was also prohibited from contacting the victim’s mother or family.

During the hearing on Thursday, two family members of Young were present. One of the relatives attempted to speak in Young’s defense. However, the judge warned them to consider what they planned to say, as their words “may put him [Young] in further jeopardy.” The next hearing is expected to take place within the next five days

Like they can justify his behavior because of his competence. He’s an angry hateful mean sub-human who has no business being in society.

I don't think his head is on right.

No one thinks punching is playing, and marijuana doesn't typically incite violent behavior.

(Side note: I've interacted with countless mj users; heavy users in withdrawal can be irritable or aggressive, but I have only seen a couple individuals who become MORE agitated when high. Those individuals both happen to have serious diagnosed mental health conditions.)

Then the articles say he's the one who checked on the infant and asked someone to call 911.

It doesn't seem that he made any attempt to cover up his crimes. From what I've read he's been generally honest with LEO - maybe more so than would be advisable by defense.

Without offering excuses for this man who has done something so awful, his behavior does suggest some kind of disconnect. I actually won't be surprised if he receives a legitimate diagnosis, although I expect he'll still be found competent enough to face the charges.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad the other twin is unharmed. but I can't help but wonder why he only punched the little girl...
