TEQUESTA — Human bones were discovered today on the grounds of a Boy Scout camp near Jonathan Dickinson State Park, prompting a death investigation by the Martin County Sheriff's Office.
A group of JROTC cadets doing a surveying exercise in a remote section of the camp stumbled across the skeletal remains, which apparently belonged to an adult, and called authorities about noon, said sheriff's Capt. Michael McKinley, head of the agency's detective bureau.
Investigators examined the bones and found no obvious signs of trauma. The remains were collected and sent to the medical examiner's office in Fort Pierce for closer scrutiny.
If the bones prove too old for conventional examination, they could be sent to a forensic archaeology laboratory for testing, McKinley said.
