I have done a post on 'Identity' on the UI threads. In the 60s, as an anthropology major, my professors considered the idea of 'race' as outmoded. 'Ballantine Beer ridiculousness,' as one of my profs said. Homo sapiens sapiens is not a 'ring species.' There is ethnicity. Since beyond the Paleolithic there has been 'us--not us.'
Arabic (I tried to learn it with a primer, it's not easy) is considered a Semitic language. Persian is considered an Indo-European. Many, I can't account for all, anthropologists & biologists consider ethnicity, or continentalism, a more acceptable term. Look at many population genetics blogs and see the disparity in ideas. Hatred and fear, it's corollary, will never leave our lizard brains. I have nothing to offer in terms of change. I just simply think we are hard-wired for some things, & that no amount of education or sensitivity training or PC awareness will help some people.
And yes, I do believe in evil. I once had a retreat director (Catholic) who was the exorcist for his order. He rode bare-back along the Rio Grande. I met a Jesuit at another retreat, he was the exorcist for another area of the U.S. Both had pure white hair at an early age. Both attested to the reality and presence of evil in this world. I've had the misfortune to meet several of the Central American death squad leaders--the aura of evil was there, so was that 1,000 yard stare. I have no answers. Only questions. English is not my first language so if I sound odd in syntax, that's it.
