I wonder about the key. Do they have to turn them in at the end of their shift? I think they get to keep the key. Most maintenance workers that I know get to keep the key in case of emergency or whatever. Are their maintenance guys on property all day or is this a On-Call basis kind of job? They call you when there is a problem?

Every property is a little different but maintenance and security are on the site 24/7 in the cases I'm familiar with. And as part of the maintenance crew, he would not need permission to enter a unit. He would knock first and then let himself in if no one answered the door.

I have a feeling that LE know a lot by now. With all of the surveillance on these properties, they would have seen him leave with or without her. I'm sure that's how they identified him as a POI so quickly.

Miya had reportedly told friends that Caballero had been texting her excessively and she asked him to stop. After stopping, he reportedly started back up again.

"She did tell them that he made her feel uncomfortable," her cousin said.

This may have occurred close to the end of his shift. I'd hate to think he could grab a key on his day off - or, worse, carry one at all times.

I wonder if she had alerted security about his unwanted advances. These properties usually have good security teams, as they're dealing with teenagers/young adults. And how could he have gotten her past security in broad daylight?

This is just so sad.

I wonder too. It’s happened to me and I just tried to stay polite and not cause more problems… this guy was a time bomb obviously.

If he removed her via a window, he must have known there weren’t any cameras on that side of the building.

Maybe it is time to rethink the electronic lock key fob thing for the residents. Add a notification or alarm on the corresponding app when your apartment door has been opened / closed. If it is unexpected, the resident could see who and what time. If nefarious, they could notify security to meet LE at the unit.

This is infuriating that they chose to trust a 19 year old child. I realize not every 19 year old is immature and evil, but seriously, it is widely known that the male brain is not fully developed until age 22 +/-. How much maintenance experience could a 19 year old possibly have compared to a more mature person?? What exactly were the job expectations here? Installing a doorknob? Cleaning up after the plumber?

I predict a major lawsuit. May Miya’s death not be in vain. May it spark a review and change to security, hiring practices, etc.

Oh such sad news. Where is poor Miya? Man I wish the POI would have left a suicide note that told LE those details. I can't imagine the pain Miya's family is going through right now.

I noticed on this flyer it mentions that "she was thought to have showered before she was taken"? Wonder why they thought this - were wet towels found in the bathroom etc.? Did he hide in the apartment and wait for her to get in the shower? IF there were wet towels did HE take a shower to remove evidence?

Wayyy too much speculation swirling in my little mind tonight!

In the press conference the Sheriff said the POI had only worked at the apartments since June. It would be interesting to know where he worked previously and if there were any "incidents" there (also with any ex GF). As in any previous harassment/stalker claims?

I'm no good with court records but this looks like there was a 2013 arrest, then a violation of parole 2017. Hopefully someone here can come up with better and more complete info:

That’s what I think happened… I think she came in not having a clue he was in there and he was waiting on her bedroom and had already barricaded it maybe if she was showering in an ensuite?

Two residents told FOX 35 News Caballero used to work maintenance at the Seminole County complex.

"He’s worked on our refrigerator, our oven, stuff like that - I know who it is for sure," said resident Joshua Hooper.

Court records out of Polk County show he was arrested in 2013 for setting off a small explosion inside a dorm hallway at Warner University.

It was just found out yesterday afternoon at the press conference. That’s when the POI and all the information on his was released to the public.

The apartment she lived in is considered high-end off-campus student housing. These types of corporate properties are in every college town/city. In some cases, you don't have to be a student to be a resident but most are because it's considered to be "student housing".

A resident pays for a room in the condo or townhome and shares the common areas of the apartment with two or three others. Typically, each bedroom has their own bathroom. Sometimes the "roommates" know each other beforehand but often they don't.

All that said, I wonder where her roommates were when this occurred. And I have to say I'm surprised that a background check for the employee did not raise red flags when he applied.

she had a one bedroom model i think... a layout was posted upthread. but i am also not sure if that was just speculation. being a staff member maybe that is a perk she enjoyed.

He was also seen on camera on Saturday. I am still wondering who recorded him on Saturday??? Did the person recording him know he was a POI? It is creepy to see him after she was missing, but before he committed suicide.
