Then we need to come up with a step that simultaneously 1) Makes it much easier to commit an adult to these facilities 2) without being able to abuse the system or making the percentage of those wrong incarcerated extremely slim.

Agreed

We need to find a way that helps people with mental illnesses and other emotional issues not need to be committed. It's best when people can live on their own and take care of themselves. In these shootings there are always many factors at play and simply locking people up won't (imo) fix the situation. What if he'd had more help, more intensive treatment, more social support, and didn't have easy access to a weapon?

Yes, I know, but we clearly need them.
We have psychiatric hospitals and long-term care facilities and group homes. Insane asylums belong in the past.

Insane asylums were completely inhumane I know, I know. I’m just disgusted with all the mental illness issues being so out of hand and uncontrollable.

Group home, assisted living or insane asylum.

Not if he doesn’t want to go. Forcing an adult into involuntary treatment is complicated and difficult, by design. The guy was 24, not 14. And we don’t know (yet) whether he was so ill that a court would have given his parents guardianship. Personally, at this point, that last part’s not worth speculating about any further.

The trouble with mental illness is that it's not an exact science. It's hard to "cure" the mind. There is no one size fits all in psychiatry. Add to that our rights and freedoms, and you end up with very few people willing to seek help and less people to give that help. You can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped.

If you are interested in learning about another case of a mentally ill young adult male who committed a violent crime, except in this case it was in Canada, and involved knives rather than a gun, the podcast Dark Poutine did an episode on it.

I think it provides some good insight into how challenging it is to deal with unpredictable violence that can occur in those with mental illness.

You can listen to the episode here: 022 – The Calgary Brentwood 5 Murders – Dark Poutine – True Crime & Dark Canadian History

How about earlier, better and more easily accessible mental health care interventions before they become crises?

I think it’s safe to say you’re not a fan of gaming. (FWIW - I’m saying this with a light heart)

Only if it doesn't violate Hippa, privacy, and due process.

No, to asylum something is to essentially warehouse it, by definition. We don’t need insane asylums. We need better, more accessible health care, which includes mental health care.

Will stop the school shootings, the theatre shootings, the concert shootings or the mall shootings?

Watch out, Tippy, there might be a troll under this bridge.

Don't forget church shootings.

Maybe we should ban all public gatherings.

Lol! For the people boasting about having more freedom than other countries there is certainly a lot of talk of banning and locking people up.
