FL - Multiple Fatalities at Mass Shooting at Madden Gaming Tournament, Jacksonville, 26 Aug 2018

You make a good point about shooting. It doesn't involve much movement so I can see why you might liken it to gaming. However I'd argue that both it and archery involve physical strength and discipline. The IOC does keep the portfolio of sports under review and introduces or drops some from time to time. Maybe if they were considering a proposal today to introduce either shooting or archery neither might make the cut.

Have you played any recent video games? Just curious if you know the skills they can require or if you’re assuming all games are just characters blasting off guns into cyber space. No judgment either way. I don’t game myself, although I do know a bit about gaming.

And some of us oldies are gamers too: well-adjusted, world-traveled, balanced and stable family folks.

The mouthings of certain sorts on this thread is either to be belligerent for no reason other than to be a contrarian, and/or simply misguided and out of touch with modern life. Just ignore them and let them go back to shouting at "young whippersnappers on mah lawn!"

I already told you to get off my dads lawn!!!!! Lol sorry, my dad is legit the stereotypical “get off my lawn” kinda guy. Gotta love him. He’s a good dude and means well, just... out of touch.

I don't game either and I am sure that there are great skills in becoming that good, but there are lots of sports that aren't in the Olympics, either.

I don’t think gaming should become an Olympic sport and didn’t claim to think so.

Nope, though I used to be the office Minesweeper champion in 1994 :D

I'm not doubting that there is skill involved. Of course there is, but there is skill involved in lots of things that aren't in the Olympics. Hell, there's probably as much skill and physical movement involved in GBBO as there is in gaming but nobody is suggesting cake making should be an Olympic event.

I didn't think that you were. I would rather this discussion though, than the get off my lawn, one.

That sounds like the US equivalent of "Git orf moi laaaaaand".

I'm not a "gamer," but I've played my share of online games and video games, starting with an online text-based role playing game back in the very early 90s. I'm talking pre-AOL. But because of that game, I can type about 90 wpm, which served me very well in college and graduate school and then throughout my career.

I've not played any video games in several years, but my favorites were Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (omg so fun!), Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts.

Then there are the kinesthetically--involved games--the Wii fit system and games --- bowl, hula hoop, baseball, yoga, meditation, tennis, dancing, ski, and on and on. Lots of very active games.

As far as more recent games, there are so many genres, one statement cannot encompass all games. There's strategy games, puzzles of every imaginable kind...my little grand-nephew plays one where he's learning to better articulate by watching children speak on the screen while another window shows him on the camera. Very educational.

Not to mention the community aspect involved now with having to create guilds and such to team up. That involves strategy and cooperation, negotiation, leadership skills and the ability to take direction, etc.

I'm not going to keep going. There are things to learn from all games, and various levels of different kinds of skills. Of course there are crappy games out there! That's for parents to decide for their children and adults to decide for themselves.

I don't actually care about the Olympics, but don't think they need to be added. I'm sure there are other"sports" which truly shouldn't be deemed as such, but personally I don't care. I'm not into sports. Mr flourish, on the other hand... groan.

BBM. I’m getting off your lawn asap please
Don’t press charges. Just kidding my love.

Great post. WII bowling was the coolest! I used to play it with my nephew every night when we lived together back in the day. I always let him win ;)

But like you said. There is so much that can be taught via all type of games. ❤️

I'm so old I had a hand-cranked modem.

Omg I can't believe I forgot Rock Band! That's super fun! "Helter Skelter" is my favorite on that one.

Bwahahahahahaha! I'm going to use that! It was so funny that I am glad I had already swallowed my water-- else I'd be cleaning up my keyboard, monitor, mouse, etc. :D

Anyway, somewhere up-thread an article was posted that spoke of the gaming community pulling together in this dark time. That's the gaming community I know and interact with. We have our 8th annual breast cancer event coming up in October, and this past June we held the 3rd annual event for the Trevor Project. We all come together in game, and we get friends, family, neighbours, etc. to donate to the cause. All the proceeds go to very worthy organisations (the Cleveland Clinic and the Trevor Project.) On my Minecraft server, I have people (one being a 70 year old grandmother) who have done events to benefit Child's Play, another wonderful charitable organisation.

This is the gaming community most of us know and associate with. There's far more good than bad in the gaming world. Just like in sports, banking, real estate, entertainment, and pretty much every other field of endeavour.

Of course if you are a curmudgeon you won't see the good in anything, and that's tragic.

So EA sports is raising public money for the victims. They couldn't donate their own corporate profits, they want the public to pay for their culpability. These gamers need to get off their derriere's and get a real job. And if they have any extra time, go pump iron in the gym

People are complex creatures who generally have more than one interest. Therefore, the idea that gamers (or any humans) fit one particular stereotype is rather ignorant, as it's not based in reality. Peoe are multifaceted. However, people can choose to stubbornly believe whatever, of course. I think whoever said "curmudgeon" was right on the nose. Contrary literally just for the sake of being contrary. Get off my lawn with your newfangled toys! Not understanding breeds fear.

When crowds have gotten out of control at like soccer games and other sports games is the reaction to just shut it all down? As in literally ban soccer because a few people were poorly behaved? Doubtful.

Any news on the injured victims 's fr this shooting? Also interesting how peeps can jump right on a bandwagon to get rid of video games but the actual item used to kill is ignored. Because, you know, toddler's regularly kill people accidentally with World of Warcraft discs.

The injured are still hospitalized. There is talk of tearing down the entire entertainment complex and making it waterfront greenspace. A capital idea! Cheerio

Oh dear, I wonder if they are going to tear the bank in Cincinnati down? And all the schools and theatres and concert venues?

I hope there injured are healing well. I like waterfront greenways. There are plenty of other places for gaming.

And there are plenty of waterfront greenways. No need to tear this place down. It's not even primarily a gaming complex. You might as well say we should tear down all cinemas because of cinema shootings.
