FL - Naked man killed by Police near MacArthur Causeway was eating face off victim

The other possibility how he ended up homeless is alcohol, considering his arrest record for public intoxication. As of now, he doesn't sound like a good candidate for face transplant. Transplant patients have to take anti-rejection meds for life, and a homeless person is not in a stable environment.

Many of those afflicted with mental illness also self medicate with alcohol and/or drugs so there is that to consider as well. Wouldn't it be something if this terrible tragedy ends up being a turning point in this troubled mans life?

Those last few posts I read made me think about that guy who apparently had it all then something happend. I think it was his addictions to drugs and alcahol that he lost everything and became homeless im not sure for how long though. Then someone reconized him and then they brought him back from living on the streets . I really don't know what he even did for a living actually i dont even know his name but every thing i saw of him they llways called him The Voice...Does anyone else remember this , the guy iam talking about.

Now if we are to believe the press the perps GF said it was either drugs or a voodoo curse.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...-cannibal-girlfriend-attack-Ronald-Poppo.html

The heck with a curse I'd want to know where his tail was going at 5:30AM. He told her he loved her and he'd be back. Really? From where?

Also if we are to believe said GF he surely was holding his Bible alot. No harm in that unless you chew a man's face off.

Ted Williams? If you mean him that didn't go to well. You just can't pull a person off the street, give them new clothing, a job, a place to rest their head safely and poof they immediately step back into society. Unfortunately it's not that simple.

Like, OneLostGirl said so often people out there self-medicate. They're never given a dual diagnosis. You do drugs or drink to level out or as to say feel normal. That said not all homeless people are addicts or alcoholics either. One thing I have seen it's a rough, rough life the street. I surely wouldn't want to be out there myself.

Oh yes people are doing these bath salts. Why? In most cases I'd say experiment. Although when you're an addict you do anything and everything just not to feel how you feel.

Again I am not sure what went on in this case or why this poor man chose to be homeless, but it happens.

Best you can do tonight/today is pray for those out there still suffering.

Yes you are right I have heard of many strange stories about being addicted to alcahol or drugs or both . If they are starting to withdrall alcaholics will drink anything if it has alcahol in it from mouth wash to antifreeze and same for drugs they will go to drug stores and grab a bag full of stuff to mix when they get home all of which on thier own couldn't hurt you but mixing it not to mention snorting just about anything right on up to sniffing glue and using spray paint

They have encountered these statistics before? Really? How many people have had their faces eaten off by another person?

Human mouths are full of staff, strep, and all kinds of other nasties. Common sense says infection would be the top risk here. This is a HUGE open wound that won't be closed any time quick, it will take multiple surgeries. The doctors don't have to see multiple cases of humans biting other human's faces off to know it is a risk, they DO see bite wounds frequently and they see other trauma like burn victims that have large amounts of open skin.

Combine that with the fact that this guy is older and possibly has liver damage from 4 decades of alcoholism, that will weaken his immune system and also make him less tolerant of some drug therapies.

I doubt he will be a candidate for a face transplant, as you pointed out he wouldn't be the best candidate for lifelong anti-rejection drugs. On top of that from what I have read Medicare only pays for 3 years of anti-rejection drug therapy. People have had to give up transplanted kidneys because Medicare stopped paying for the drugs, giving up a transplanted face is FAR worse and would require MASSIVE amounts of reconstructive surgery.

If he survives the gov should set him up in a small safe apartment and allow him all of the narcotics he needs for life.

Schizophrenia was the first thing I thought of after reading that Mr. Poppo had been a good student and seemed to have everything going for him. Doesn't schizophrenia usually strike in early adulthood?

Also, JMO, but I think not only Mr. Poppo's environment worked against him in surviving an infection, but his age and health also. The woman that was attacked by the chimp was either in her thirties or forties and appeared to be in good health.

My hope is that either Mr. Poppo will survive this, get a face transplant, a place to live and someone who can watch over him to make sure he takes his meds and live out the rest of his life as he most likely deserved, safe and cared for.

I hate to say this, but my other wish for him is that IF he will never get a face transplant, never get the opportunity to live a "normal" life (whatever that is), that he will pass peacefully.

ETA: Sonya610, my apologies. I see where you already mentioned about Mr. Poppo's health working against his survival.

There are too incidences i saw on animal planet a woman where she was attacked by a chimp and its all recorded on the 911 call her screaming.

Yeah I saw both of those chimp stories on animal planet. In the case of Travis the owner gave the chimp Xanax to "calm him down" before the attack, that alone could have CAUSED the attack. Xanax lowers anxiety and that means lowers inhibition, it is known to make unstable violent prone humans become more aggressive, small wonder it would have the same effect on an aggitated Chimp.

Course animal planet left that fact OUT of their story, they were pushing an agenda so inconvenient facts don't belong. They also promote some highly aggressive/protective little known dog breeds as "great family pets for beginners" which really angers me as well. Maybe they think any problems that occur will make great future episodes.

Thank you for correcting me jjenny. I should have researched that. I guess though, still, a non-alcoholic, well cared for fifty year old has a better chance of fighting infection than a sixty-five year old alcoholic that's lived on the streets.

The chimp attack victim also had something to live for, her daughter.

holy moly, I was out of touch this weekend and totally missed the news about this one. Just heard from a coworker this morning.

Just horrific. It is almost to heinous for the mind to absorb.

They interviewed his sister. I think she would know if he was in Vietnam or not.

What? I haven't seen that! So they found some family members, that is great!

Do you have a link? I would love to read it.

jjenny found it I think, Lovejac. Lemme go see if I can find the number post for you. jenny referred to it and it had more information about him via his sister.

There was also a friend of his from High School who looked for him for their reunion. Nobody could find him. That friend was in Vietnam and didn't mention Poppo going so I don't think he served.

Lemme go find it.

Post 124.

Here's the link. I do believe Joe found one as well.

T, I'm going to venture to guess that besides you being immensely busy you may have subconciously missed this. You have such great compassion and empathy. I know you get so upset with the violence in this world.:blowkiss:

Wow...this is a small bit of good news. Sounds like his family cares about him.

A sister, Antoinette Poppo, told Miami Herald news partner WFOR that the family hadn’t heard from or about her brother in decades.

“We really thought he was dead,” his sister told the television station. “We thought he was no longer of this Earth.... I’m just glad my mother is not here to see this.”

Article above states Mr. Poppo went on to the City College of New York. My dad went to CCNY around the same time, I'm going to see if he remembers him.
It seems like Mr. Poppo, and maybe even the attacker, fell through every last crack in our mental health system.
On Nightline last night, they said these "bath salts" are still legal in 12 states. I'm not a huge fan of government regulation (for instance, our Mayor Bloomberg annouced the other day he plans on banning all sodas over 16 ounces to "help fight obesity"), but if these "bath salts" can turn a person into a naked face-eating lunatic in the blink of an eye, they need to be banned ASAP!

I don't get this impression. They haven't seen him in years and believed him to be dead. Sounds like he is estranged from his family, to say the least.

"Neither she nor Poppo’s two brothers have seen him in more than 30 years, she said, and none of them plan a trip to Miami. Two siblings live in New York, another in California."
