Circumstances of Recovery: A truck driver dumping a load of garbage at a Collier County landfill near the intersection of Alligator Alley and State Road 951 noticed an object fall from the top of a heap of trash which had been dumped. The man got out of his truck and decided to investigate the mysterious object, opening the plastic bag to find the badly damaged body of a newborn baby girl with part of the umbilical cord still attached.
During the early stages of the investigation, authorities hypothesized that the baby had been stillborn. However, after an autopsy, the medical examiner concluded that the girl had been born alive and was likely killed by suffocation. She probably died 12 to 24 hours before her body was found. Her race was unable to be determined, although she may be of Black or Hispanic heritage.
Authorities believe the baby was disposed of in one of the commercial dumpsters along the truck's route, which included Goodlette Road, Rosemary Lane, Pine Ridge Road, Airport Road, Davis Boulevard, and U.S. 41 East. Several motels were located near the dumpsters the truck picked up trash from.

A dead infant, apparently placed in a trash dumpster Tuesday somewhere in North Naples or the industrial park off Airport Road, was found at the Collier County landfill Wednesday morning when a truck driver dumped a load of garbage.
Manuel Rosa, a driver for Yahl Brothers, told lawmen he saw an object topple from the top of a heap of garbage being dumped. Rosa, puzzled, hopped out of the truck and found the body of a newborn girl.

[Medical examiner Dr. Heinrich] Schmid conducted an autopsy Wednesday, but no official cause of death has been released. Officials said the girl was dead between 12 and 24 hours before being found at the dump.

The garbage truck's route for Wednesday morning, [Detective Mike] Koors said, started in the area of Goodlette Road near Pine Ridge Road. The truck then made stops from Rosemary Lane back to Pine Ridge Road. The route then took the truck to Airport Road and into the industrial park.
Rosa finished the route with stops on Davis Boulevard and U.S. 41 East.
All of the stops were at commercial sites, where companies have dumpsters, Koors said. Officials theorize the baby was stillborn and then the mother and possibly another person decided to get rid of the small corpse.
Koors said the body apparently was damaged as load after load of garbage was compacted inside the Yahl Brothers truck. The section umbilical cord was still attached to the girl, Koors added.

Also being checked are motel records. Koors said several motels are near pickup sites along the garbage truck's route.
Denes Husty, "Dead baby found at Collier landfill," News-Press [Fort Myers, FL], 9 June 1983, 1A.
The body was discovered at 11:45 a.m. by workers at the landfill after the truck had completed its rounds, sheriff's officials said. The landfill is located near the intersection of Alligator Alley and State Road 951.
"Baby found at landfill not stillborn," News-Press [Fort Myers, FL], 11 June 1983, B1.
"Suffocation Blamed In Baby Girl's Death," Naples Daily News, 17 June 1983, 3A.
Dr. Heinrich Schmid, the county medical examiner, said last week that he discovered air in the lungs of the baby, an indication she was alive after birth and later died. Tests done at an autopsy confirmed this analysis, Sheriff's officials said Thursday. An early theory had been that the baby was dead at birth.
Detective Mike Koors said he has received only one telephone call about the dead baby since the body was found by a Yahl Brothers truck driver as he dumped a load of trash at the landfill.
