Man still missing in Payne's Prairie; FDOT initiating crash study

Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Florida Fish and Wildlife officials expanded their efforts Monday using an amphibious vehicle from Clay Electric to further search the muddy waters near I-75.

"The conditions; not only is there zero visibility and weeds, and muck and marsh, but there's also gators in the general area there," said Art Forgey, spokesperson for the Alachua County Sheriff's Office. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office reached out to Alachua County deputies Thursday for help, Marvella's black SUV was found Friday evening[Malong with his cell phone.

"There was a person in the vehicle when it when into the water due to some evidence that they gathered and that's why the extensive search to locate someone," Forgey said.

A wired fence is the only thing separating I-75 from the prairie. Marvella's father told TV20, the barrier needs to be stronger. He preferred not to speak on camera, but he added the state should consider installing some kind of wall to protect cars from driving into the prairie's muddy waters.

BBM - It now sounds like it very well could be an accident. Sadly it doesn't sound like a happy ending.

I feel for Paul's father but there are so many bodies of water in Florida that you can not protect every section where a car could go in.At least once a week someone in Florida drives or crashes into a lake, pond, canal.I myself worry of this and do not drive at night in unfamiliar areas.I keep a hammer under drivers seat for submerging or fire.

Yet according to this article, the last person he spoke to was his girlfriend around midnight.

Conflicting info seems to be the norm in missing persons cases nowadays. Nobody fact checks. It's frustrating. [emoji36]

Yes, and it was the same media outlet that the day before AND the day after that said 7:30-8:00 on Sunday was last contact. I have a feeling that the web folks misunderstood their own person on a broadcast, and mis-stated the midnight SATURDAY Zaxby's visit in Jacksonville incorrectly as the last contact?

Paul Anthony Marvella was last seen on Sunday Jan. 15, after making a delivery for his boss at a tissue bank in Jacksonville. The 30-year-old Spring Hill resident contacted his employer saying he was on his way but he never*returned.

At approximately midnight, a friend of Marvella said she received a call from him and that he was near Starke, but the call dropped.

“The last person to talk to Paul was his coworker sometime between 7:30 and 8 last Sunday night. “

When the coworker tried to call him back just 40 minutes later, the phone went to voicemail over and over again
.

My heart breaks for all as from Starke (last phone call referenced in other articles) to Paynes Prairie (location to accident) is about 42 minutes according to Google maps.

:praying: that they find him

:tyou: I just NOW have put a hammer in my car. I've read it is rare to need, but it's an easy thing to put in your car for that very reason.

Whenever we are in Florida, I feel like the whole state is just a month or so away from being taken back by the wildlife.... would NOT want to end up in a car crashed in a swampy area. It really doesn't make me feel much better to know a gator would not EAT a person, but instead would drown a person by dragging them down under the water. Same terror, same result. :/

Don't think this will end well, sadly....

I keep thinking that since this is so near the University of Florida, that they might help out with their engineering students with a shout out to help to do drones to assist in search. I know, just a wild thought but drones would be so well suited for this search if the accident scene was open.

I haven't seen a mile marker posted on any journalist site... wish they would publish that!

ETA: In contacting the reporter of one of the above articles, ([email protected]) she said that she was informed by family that it was a few miles southbound of the rest stop below Gainesville (that reststop being the beginning of Paynes Prarie)

How far (miles, minutes, walking distance, etc) from the submerged vehicle was his phone found?

Or have they not found it yet, only pinged its approximate location???

Adding to the mystery, officials were able to ping Paul’s cell phone which was not located inside the vehicle. Family says the cell phone is somewhere in the vicinity of I-75 and SR-24, which is north of the location where Paul’s SUV was located.

this is according to the article: http://www.rnrfonline.com/mystery-gr...ed-unoccupied/

Ed: The missing persons flyer says the last person he spoke with was a family member. I checked the Secy of State site. The company is owned by someone with another name and company address/president and officers are in Beverly Hills... so doubt family member.

Paynes Prarie is a 20,000 acre state park which is known for it's alligators. https://www.washingtonpost.com/life...1ef60ca26de_story.html?utm_term=.788cc182c706

I just wanted to add re the alligators part... I am about 2.5 hours south of the Gainesville area, born and raised, and I often camp at Payne's Prairie... it is one of my favorite State Parks in FL. I have never seen an alligator there... I think of Payne's more known for its wild horses and bison herd. In my neck of the woods we have Myakka SP (look up Deep Hole)... I would say that is a SP known for its gators! I am going to get off track here but I am basically trying to say I don't think gators will play a role in this. (Or any other case involving an alligator habitat in general. They are all over FL and they leave people alone 99.9% of the time.)

I really hope Paul's mystery is solved soon! I know driving through the Starke area on my road trips out of state puts me to sleep!! I am usually driving late though to avoid traffic. Just a boring area and... not very aesthetically pleasing.

Love your comment about Florida,so true!
OT- Speaking of gators,I had been watching a little one every evening in the lake and a month ago my neighbor saw a monkey walking in our backyard along the lake.If anyone wants to look it up they come from a colony of monkeys from the 1940's and 50's used for Tarzan movies, they left them on an island in Silver Springs thinking they can not swim.
Prayers for Paul and his family.

florida is full of gators and while the may not "eat" you, they are still definitely dangerous. you don't walk small children or animals near any bodies of water

VERY SAD UPDATE 1/23/17 (FROM PAUL'S BROTHER)
As of tonight, Monday 1/23/17 @ 6PM, the search for Paul has been suspended. All agencies involved, from Florida Highway Patrol, to Alachua Sheriffs Office, to Florida Dept of Transportation have exhausted all the resources and staff/equipment that they have available in their efforts to find Paul.
Unfortunately, the area his vehicle crashed into has proven to be too difficult for them to safely continue searching and the timeframe too long from the crash for them to have been able to find him.
We are all deeply, deeply saddened by this outcome. But we have all appreciated and continue to appreciate all of the support and help we have received from our family, friends and beyond.
We will be planning to have a Celebration of Life for Paul in the future and will be sure to let everyone know when/where it will be.
Thank you all again for all that you have done for us.

Many cars/SUV's like mine (Marano) the head rest comes off to use the spikes to break windows etc. FYI.

:rose: :rose: :rose:

My heart goes out to the family. I cannot fathom having my child missing after an accident like that, and the search being called off to look for the body by LE.

:praying: for his family and friends.

Kristen organized a search party, and her brother spotted the bumper floating in a lake in Paynes Prairie, a state preserve in Micanopy. When the GMC was pulled out of the water, it was empty. George said the airbags had deployed and the driver's-side bag had been cut with a knife, leading investigators to believe Paul had freed himself from the vehicle but drowned in the murky water.

They were back out Monday morning, and the divers kept going in the water until the light finally ran out at dinnertime. At that point, George said state park officials told him there was nothing more that could be done without damaging the preserve's natural state.

Heartbreaking. I can't imagine how much harder the mourning process must be without truly knowing exactly what happened or having a body to lay to rest.
