WINTER PARK, Fla. — A woman accused of killing her boyfriend by zipping him inside a suitcase is set to return to court this morning.

Orange County deputies said Sarah Boone and Jorge Torres were drunk when she put him in the bag during a game of hide-and-seek in their Winter Park apartment in February 2020.

Investigators said cellphone video shows Boone taunting Torres while he struggled to breathe.

“I can’t (expletive) breathe, seriously,” Torres is heard saying in the videos, according to deputies.

“That’s on you,” Boone replied, according to deputies. “That’s what it feels like when you cheat on me,” and “that’s what you do when you choke me,” and that he “should probably shut the (expletive) up.”

Boone’s trial is set to begin May 16.

Jury selection begins this morning after a delay due to the hurricane in #SarahBoone trial. It will likely take several days to seat a jury. We are not allowed to broadcast jury selection.

Sarah Boone has been brought into the courtroom ahead of jury selection. The first panel of 50 potential jurors will be brought in this morning. Today and tomorrow potential jurors will be questioned about knowledge of the case and hardships for serving.

Here are some questions potential jurors will be asked:

- Has anyone seen any videos about a man in a suitcase?
- Has anyone commented on social media about any videos of a man in a suitcase?
- Has anyone seen a video of Miss Boone being interrogated by police?
- Has anyone commented on social media about Miss Boone being interrogated by police?
- Has anyone seen body worn camera videos of Miss Boone speaking to police?

3 of the 50 potential jurors immediately recognized #SarahBoone.

The state's witness list is approx. 50 people. They just read the names off to see if any jurors recognize the names.

It's funny how the blouse they got for her really just looks like a dressy version of her jail clothes.

15 of the first 50 potential jurors made it past the hardship round. The remaining 35 were struck for cause on stipulation. Reasons for striking included: full time students, vacations already paid for, health reasons and child care.

2 of the 15 jurors raised their paddles indicating they have seen "the video of a man in a suitcase".

Juror #35 raised their paddle at pretty much every question about seeing the suitcase video, #SarahBoone interrogation, etc.. and that they do not believe they could be a fair juror. A total of 3 (that includes #35) of the 15 indicated they could not be a fair and impartial juror.

If 11 made it through this morning's round and there will be another batch from this afternoon's round, it sounds to me (very much not a courtroom expert) that a jury might be seated sometime tomorrow morning and the trial ready to begin by the afternoon.

For second-degree murder in Florida, they only seat a 6 person jury. They will also select a minimum of 4 alternates. Judge would like to get more than 4 alternates if they can.

After this break they will issue their cause challenges. Then we'll know how many from the second group of 50 made it through this round.

Judge sends potential jurors out for a break and tells them they can talk about anything but the case. "If you're a Gator fan, I have bad news for you, you lost Graham Mertz for the year, he tore his ACL. It could be worse, you could be a Florida State fan." Judge holds up his FSU coffee cup.

On a potential stinky note: #SarahBoone's attorney tells the judge she starts her day around 2am to be transported to court. She won't get back from court each night until potentially 9pm. She's worried she won't have any opportunities to shower. They are going to see how it goes tonight/tomorrow morning

JURY SELECTION: 23 total today (out of 100) qualified to move on. A new panel of 50 will be brought in tomorrow morning. Judge Kraynick is looking for 50 qualified jurors before the final chosen panel. He's shooting high for 8 alternates for a total of 14 jurors. He might settle for less than that. Opening statements won't happen before Wednesday. Sarah was very animated with her attorneys before she was escorted out.

Wow! Since 23 were selected today, I'm surprised he wants to continue on with another 50 tomorrow. Why not just pick the final jury of 14 (6 jurors + 8 alternates) from the qualified pool of 23 today?

If SB was not being given sufficient time to sleep in between each daily court hearing, that would be a human rights issue. Sleep deprivation is a form of torture. Nothing to do with whether she can shower or not.

Why is she having to be up at 2am in order to be transported and then not returned until 9pm? Is there proof of this allegation or is it more of Owens being ridiculous on behalf of SB?

She complained during a previous hearing some months back that the jail staff wake her at 2-3am on days she had court because of some staffing issues and the time it takes to process and transport prisoners in/out. Then same situation on the return trip back to jail in the evening. The judge didn't question it then so I would assume it's a legit complaint, although it does seem excessive. Certainly she's not the first prisoner to face daily transport from jail for a trial so they must have some process in place to handle timelines, showers, meals, etc. to get basic needs met for these prisoners.
