I don't think it was a car accident as some have speculated.
Where I live, if it is a hit and run, they release as much info about the car as they can-color from paint chips on road or clothing of victim, parts that fall off, look for dents. that type of thing. I don't think they think it was a car accident or they would release that info so people could be on the lookout. A person who hits and runs is a different kind that a deliberate killer. Sometimes they hit and run because they were drunk.
In my memory I had thought the Sheriff had said "horrific crime". Now I see that he had said, "heinous crime" as posted above.
A pedestrian accident would leave evidence on the road, or grass, or sidewalk. There was no place investigated as the house on 1080 Gano, so there was no other crime scene around the area (that we know of.) Plus there were dogs searching and blood or bodily fluids on the road would've been a hit for the dogs even many weeks after.
Plus, due to the time of the day and visibility, someone must've heard a car slamming the breaks or hitting Somer, or seen the driver getting out of the car and picking her up.
Unless it was in a backroad, deserted at that time of the day, I doubt that was the case.
The term heinous crime hints of sexual abuse. But, sometimes I think that maybe the sheriff said that to describe the state of the body when found. That even though the criminal did not do it himself, he caused it by putting Somer in the garbage. Thus, causing it.
At the beginning I thought that maybe Somer saw a pool in someone's yard while "exploring" a shorcut and she jumped in and drowned. Then the homeowner did not want to get in trouble because he/she may not have insurance, or a fence, or the fence was torn and knew that he/she be in trouble with the law. So, the person panicked and dumped the body in the garbage.
That was my initial thought, knowing that Somer liked pools and tree houses.
The searches done at 1080 Gano, and the statements from the Sheriff made me change my mind.
