I guess it is good that Josie is up in a wheelchair...but the reality of the severity of this is just mindboggling...

to not be able to talk/walk, her right side looks limp..she is like a person who had a stroke

I know that physical therapy can do wonders...but she has a long hard road ahead JMO
Thank God for her youth, her mother's love...and our community seems to be rallying around her and hopefully will continue for her and for her friend Michael Brewer

Still I am struck by the severity and the pain and the horror of what these kids endure and will endure all because of a moment's anger and rage by their respective bullies/jerks

I hope all the monsters who did this to these kids are tried as adults....we need more license plates here in Florida, we can keep them employed for years

as for WT....his callous text message doesn't surprise me

Me too.
Guess since he has been in jail this long he has had more time to think about his actions than riding his bicycle 3 miles with steel toe boots on.

It is just mind blowing to me that in today's society everyone looks everywhere but at themselves to be responsible for their own actions.

You know what? Words no matter how "disparaging" comment is, a comment never caused brain damage.

He had a SERIES of choices, it wasn't one spur of the moment "snap" it was a thought out process of choices that did not consider the consequences of the choices.

If the texts made him mad, he could have chose to turn off the phone, but didn't

He chose to get his boots

He chose the boots because they would do MORE DAMAGE/PROTECT HIS FEET WHILE HE WAS KICKING JOSIE

He chose to ride 3 miles on his bike to the school (it was no "instant" trip)

He chose to find Josie

He chose to hit her

He chose to kick her

IF he would have been next to Josie at the time the comment was made, you MIGHT have an argument for him "snapping" BUT it didn't happen that way. He made a conscious CHOICE to get the boots, to ride the bike 3 miles to school, to find Josie, and to nearly KILL her.

It's only by the grace of God she's not dead and he's not facing a premeditated murder charge.

Personally, I think for as long as she needs care, any "work" he does in prison or if he's ever God-forbid released, should be garnished and the money given to Josie. She'll need all the help she can get.

This really angers me to no end. :banghead:
We are not even sure who sent the texts on Josie's phone.
Thats fine if she stays in juvenile court but she should be in lockup for her part.

I'm just as pissed and heartbroken over what has happened to Josie as the next person...but...

To be brutally honest, the case against K looks far too weak to be winnable with adult charges, and I really think the DA made noises about making said charges as a PR move. As it is, I'm not sure how well the juvie trial is going to work out for them, as it's much harder to get a guilty verdict from a jury or judge presented with well laid out facts than it has been for them to get one from the public being spoonfed innuendo by the media.

I've taken the time to lay out events without the media's speculation and character assassination, and to be honest I'm just not seeing how the charges against K make much sense other than as an (obviously successful) PR move by the Sheriff and DA (both elected officials if I'm not mistaken) in order to keep a rabid public happy - really the media commentary that I've been seeing on K has been anything but rational. I'll go ahead and break things down with logic later if anyone is interested.

And again - we know that K didn't send the message as the argument was about Josie not letting Treacy talk (text) to K - that whole 'K sent the insult' theory just doesn't make sense to me with the given facts.

I do not know if K sent the texts or not. It is very possible since she was at the school and had time to give Josie her phone back. I hope this all comes out in WT trial as I really want to know and hear what the texts said. She is far from innocent in this tragedy.

Judge denies bond for teen accused of brutally beating a girl at school

A 15-year-old teenager accused of brutally beating another teen outside Deerfield Beach Middle school in March faced a Broward county judge Saturday morning who denied his bond.

Treacy is being charged with attempted first degree murder as an adult, according to the Broward State Attorney's Office.

I am relieved to hear he is charged as an adult. I hope he gets some serious time to think about what he has done to someone he did not even know.

I expect they cant actually know this. they have their ideas I am sure but unless josie can tell (with a head injury unlikely she remembers the day, probably a blessing) or the other girl admits it...

Josie Ratley Scheduled For Surgery On Monday

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― A Deerfield Beach teen severely beaten by another teen near a bus stop at her middle school is scheduled for surgery on Monday.

Doctors removed part of 15-year-old Josie Ratley's skull after the March 17th attack to help relieve pressure caused by the swelling of her brain. Monday afternoon doctors will perform surgery to repair part of her skull that was damaged in the attack. After more than three weeks of being kept in a medically induced coma to aid her recovery, Ratley woke last Sunday.

n a picture released in the following by her attorney Rick Freedman, Josie is seen in a wheelchair with her mother by her side. Doctors say while she has made slow and steady progress Josie is unable to speak, walk and must use a feeding tube because she can't swallow.

"Josie is now awake and doctors have conducted a series of exams and tests on her. Unfortunately, the results of that testing have confirmed their worst fears. Josie has experienced a traumatic brain injury. The area of the brain that has been most damaged is to the area that includes the ability to communicate. Josie cannot speak, Josie cannot walk and Josie has limited function in her right arm, right hand and right fingers," said Freedman at a news conference last Wednesday.

Pediatric surgeon Dr. David Lasko said Josie has made slow but steady and remarkable improvement since the beginning of her stay her, and described her as a "remarkable young woman."
