GUILTY FL - Wayne Treacy for savage beating of 15yo girl, Deerfield Beach, 17 March 2010

  • #621
DEERFIELD BEACH -- Walking with a slightly wobbly gait but beaming a grin, Josie Lou Ratley made her first public appearance Sunday since the March 17 beating that left her in a coma.

Steadied by her mother, Ratley, 15, acknowledged cheers and applause from the crowd as she appeared briefly outdoors at a fundraiser, ``Let's Break the Cycle . . . A Ride for Josie,'' at the Cove Restaurant in Deerfield Beach.

Wearing a black fedora-style hat, a bright red blouse and matching red hoop earrings, a black knee-length skirt and sandals, Josie Ratley clasped hands with her mother, Hilda Gotay Ratley, as they met with the media inside the restaurant.

Wayne Treacy, 15, charged with attempted first-degree murder in a savage attack on a teenage girl in Deerfield Beach, was refused bail Thursday by a Broward judge.

Treacy's lawyer contended that a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision banning life imprisonment for juveniles convicted of anything short of homicide meant Treacy was entitled to be released on bail.

Prosecutor Maria Schneider argued that Treacy's alleged offense is so serious that he must remain locked up.

Bump for Josie, hope is alive.

  • #624
why was there even a question about bail? our justice system makes me shudder

  • #625
I can imagine that his stepfather's little rantings didn't help his bid for bail. There is no way that kid should be released back to the custody of that man. He is a bad influence and has no sense or compassion whatsoever.

I came to find you Josie!

bumpity bump. Haven't heard much lately on our Joise girl's recovery. I hope she is still doing well and making strides. Still praying for you sweetie

as much as i hate to say it, the better she becomes and the more she recovers, the less our justice system will feel the need to go all out for justice for her.

remember amanda runyion, the 3 year old beat so badly by her mom's bf that she had to have her bladder and part of her intestines removed? when she made a full recover the judge cut the monster's bail in half cause 'i only put it that high cause i thought she was gonna die.'

very sad state of affairs in our judicial system

FORT LAUDERDALE —
Five months after a near-fatal beating at Deerfield Beach Middle School, Josie Lou Ratley can write her first and last name — but not much else.

Unable to speak clearly, she doesn't like to talk, said Jowharah Sanders, head of a local nonprofit group that has been working to help rehabilitate the teen.

Once an artist who penned anime portraits, the 15-year-old now seems to have no interest in art and does not recall creating many of her works, Sanders said.

Appeals court denies bail hearing for Wayne Treacy
Suspect to remain jailed until trial for beating Josie Lou Ratley

By Rafael A. Olmeda, Sun Sentinel

12:00 p.m. EDT, July 28, 2010
West Palm Beach — The Pompano Beach teenager accused of trying to kill Josie Lou Ratley by stomping on her head at a middle school bus stop last March will have to stay in jail, an appeals court has decided.

Lawyers for Wayne Treacy, 15, said they were disappointed that the Fourth District Court of Appeal rejected their request last week without offering a written opinion or explanation of their reasoning. The defense team argued that because of his age, Treacy is not subject to the life-without-parole maximum sentence if he's convicted of first degree attempted murder in the March 17 beating. Under Florida law, courts are not obliged to consider bail for charges punishable by life in prison.

I sure hope Josie gets her artistry back. I know that was a big part of who she was and I hope it comes back to her at some point.

Me too! They are having a fundraiser this weekend at a local gallery and two of her drawings are being put up for auction.

Prayers for Josie and her family.
