Teen neighbors of Luis Toledo testify they heard yells for help the night of disappearances
ST. AUGUSTINE — Two teenage sisters who lived across the street from Luis Toledo’s home testified they heard screams the night he is accused of killing his wife and her two children.
One of the girls later found a menacing-looking knife with a serrated blade and brass-knuckles on the handle tossed in some grass near a pond in the neighborhood. Toledo had tossed the knife out of his car when he spotted a deputy at his house as he drove home.

The now 17-year-old girl was the first of the two sisters to take the stand in the trial against Toledo. The girls lived across the street from Toledo. The teen, who appeared nervous as everyone in the courtroom watched her, said she and her sister were in their bedroom on Oct. 23, 2013. She said she had been half asleep until she heard the sounds about 12:30 a.m.
“I was laying in bed and I heard a woman saying, ‘Help me,’ so I turned to my sister and asked her if she heard that. She said, ‘Yes,’ ” the teen testified.
She said she looked out her bedroom window, which faced the street, but saw nothing. She said the sound was coming from the street or across the street.

Next up was her now 14-year-old sister.
“We were in my room. I was wide awake and I heard a girl yell, ‘Help me’ two to three times at max. And it was pretty clear and loud. It sounded like it was coming from the front of the house,” the 14-year-old said.
