Florida - Coronavirus Covid-19 #2

  • #61
Honestly, I have never been an advocate for homeschooling. But this Covid is a game changer. The sad part is that this is really a socio economic situation. Some families might be living with a single parent, or parents who work full time.

I don't know what I would do if my kids were little now.

I feel the same @mickey2942 . Glad I don’t have to make that decision. I feel for these kids. It’s a different time. They need the socialization as well as the education... but as a parent you never want to put your child in harm’s way. Some may not have a choice.

The issue with education, is that it is federal law, mandate to provide Special Education services, PL 94-142, and subsequent IDEA. Back in March, the President declared a "State of Emergency", and education services for all children was discontinued.

There is no longer the "State of Emergency", and if schools don't open, they would be breaking federal laws regarding services to children enrolled in Special Education, who have an Individualized Education Program (IEP).

That is the legal Gordin Knot.

56 Florida hospital ICUs have hit capacity
US coronavirus: 56 Florida hospital ICUs have hit capacity - CNN

Snips:
At least 56 intensive care units in Florida hospitals reached capacity on Tuesday, state officials said. Another 35 hospitals show ICU bed availability of 10% or less, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration in that state.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday that officials are sending 100 nurses and adding nearly 50 beds to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital. The facility has 345 Covid-19 patients with 25% of them in the ICU, the governor said.

In Florida, at least 43 hospitals across 21 counties -- including Miami-Dade, Broward, Hillsborough and Orange counties -- have hit capacity and show zero ICU beds available, according to data released by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA).

Florida hospitals more worried about staffing than space as COVID cases surge
https://www.fox13news.com/news/flor...bout-staffing-than-space-as-covid-cases-surge
“It's not so much bed space that hospitals are worried about; it's the staff to take care of patients.”

[...]

“One of the ways they're utilizing staffing is postponing elective surgeries.“

[...]

"”We are seeing an increase in demand for testing, outpatient care, and inpatient services due to COVID-19. In order to meet these demands, we will be suspending all non-acute surgical procedures," a spokesperson said in an internal email sent to patients Monday and later obtained by FOX 13.“

“”As the number of novel coronavirus cases reported nationwide rapidly approaches 3 million, dozens of hospitals in Florida have run out of space in their intensive care units. Arizona is also swiftly approaching full capacity for ICU beds, while Texas, another hot spot, reported more than 10,000 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday.””

Florida hits its highest rate for positive COVID-19 tests in one day

“The chances of getting a positive test for COVID-19 are becoming higher than at anytime since the pandemic began, a sign that the virus is spreading at a quicker pace.

The positive test rate on Tuesday reached 20.8% statewide, the highest yet for a single day.

Equally concerning were the 381 people who were hospitalized from Monday to Tuesday, one of the highest cumulative jumps day to day since the beginning of the pandemic.“

Well the good news about all of this, is you can recover from this flu. I have 3 personal friends that are sick with it now, and they said it's bad, but they are recovering. I have been most likely exposed, but so far so good. I think if you wear your mask, wash your hands, and stay 6 ft from others you should be fine. I think the problem is that SOME people are too old or frail and will not recover. For those people we have to do our best not to keep it going. JMO

FYI
Renters cheer, landlords fume at last-minute extension of Florida's eviction moratorium

When Florida Gov. Ron De Santis announced he was extending the state’s moratorium on evictions and mortgage foreclosures for another month — only three and a half hours before the existing moratorium was due to expire — the reaction was swift and polarizing. Advocates for rent relief, including the attendees at a Florida Housing Justice Alliance press conference taking place in front of the Miami-Dade County Courthouse, burst into cheers and applause. But some landlords and the lawyers who represent them — stuck with tenants who illegally stopped paying rent since Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s suspension of eviction proceedings on March 12 — seethed with exasperation. More from the Miami Herald, the Orlando Business Journal, and Bay News 9.

There needs to be some assistance for landlords with direct payments to them. Much like they’re doing for small businesses with the PPP loans. They’re victims of this nightmare too. Maybe push their mortgage payments to the end of the loan until they can get help.

I know 10 people that was tested on Monday. They attended a beach family 4th of July holiday vacation at their family beach house.
Close quarters.

On Saturday one of their family members, were contacted at the beach house they were all staying at- alert their co-worker was tested positive.

Half of the family fled immediately.
Other half fled Monday morning all to the nearest testing for Covid-19 drive thru.
They went home quarantined.

All negative tis far.
They await results of 2 more in that group.

This was a wake up call.
I tried to tell them it was a bad idea.
Now look.....
But I am not a told you soooooo kind of person.
But good grieve Charley Brown!!!

I think people who partied on 4th of July will bring the #'s up.
2 people were in their 70's the others under 40.
We are not living in Normal Times.

The children who require these type services have been left to languish for months. There’s no back up plan for them in a situation like this. All the hard work they accomplished this year is likely undone. This is going to be particularly hard on the lower income families. The summer library programs aren’t available either and that just compounds this. My heart just breaks for these families.

When my youngest was in elementary school, she had an IEP for learning disabilities, speech, etc. Even with that help, she was so behind, she literally failed Kindergarten. At the time, I was married and we could afford private tutoring for her. It took years to get the right diagnosis, care plan and to get her up to grade level.

Today a former co-worker once again posted about this virus being overblown, a hoax, not as bad as the people are making it out to be, blah, blah, blah....

1. This woman’s father is in a nursing home and she hasn’t been able to see him since March.

2. This past weekend, her and her family were posting photos from a resort hotel, busy pool, restaurants, etc.

3. And to boot, this lady got a flu shot about 4-5 years ago, had a reaction and has lost partial vision in one eye as a result.

I don’t get how the correlation of these 3 things escapes her. She’s a pretty intelligent person, or was, at one time. I’m shaking my head at the willful denial I’m seeing and it’s not just her.

I'm beginning to think there are two clear cut camps - those that think it's the flu - not as bad, learn to live with it- let's party together at the beach etc.
and then there are those like us- who are very worried about it, wear masks, stay home as much as possible, etc.

remember me and my cruise - well i was one of first camp at that time - March 13 - returned March 16 - mine was the last sail for RCCL - everything was grounded Sunday. So I get it from both sides but the outcomes of the sick people who are dying and who's lungs are messed up is just too much for me to ignore- so after I quarantined, I've followed all the advice on here and stayed home when I can (I can't work from home) and my biggest fear are the few people in my office who are in the first camp and have been going out to lunch every day. For months...

Update just received call
The one that was exposed by co-worker at end of June.
Just got POSITIVE TEST RESULTS.
He is in his early 30's. He lives in North Carolina and traveled to attend the FL. Family Beach July 4th.
He was tested Monday in FL. Today's results makes 1 more in FL.

However he brought it from NC.

He and his wife will be quarantined at the family beach house on the Atlantic Coast.

Other family members 8 more at at home under quarantine.

This has changed their thinking on Covid 19 now.

My prayers are with them.
This was a state to state.

Stay safe
Peace my friends
