Have you had Korean Kalbi (Galbi)? It is short ribs, cut flanken style, marinated and grilled. It was in that photo of my New Year’s foods. Here’s the photo, to which I added an arrow pointing to the Kalbi ribs. I cut them between the bones for ease of serving buffet-style.

The ribs are cut thin in strips across the rib bones.
I usually buy the flanken ribs at a Korean market, but was surprised to see it at my
local Stater Bros. Market, too.
I saw these! LOL, I saw these when I was looking up the short ribs, and I don't think I ever did. MAYBE in a taco, but it would have to be a very long time ago for me not to remember. Honestly, that's not surprising, I don't eat much red meat at all. I'm probably eating more recently than I have in my whole life, And probably the thing I eat the least of period is ribs. Even pork ribs is a pretty rare thing. When we get the pork ribs, it's either BBQ/grilling (maybe long-term roasted in oven) and/or Char-Siu.

These beef ribs look quite versatile. I can't believe in the course of my lifetime I never had one of those, but honest engine, I can genuinely almost swear by it, I don't think I've ever had one. If I did, I had no awareness of what it was. The closest I realistically may have come is some of the ribs ground into a burger mix somewhere. And THAT I will try if I get my hands on them, LOL... But that would probably still wait because for the first time, I can swear to you I know I'd put them on polenta. That means another batch for burgers, lol.

Speaking of short ribs, on the Alaska cruise I took in July one of my friends and I went to one of the ship’s restaurants for dinner one night. It was an upcharge restaurant that served food that wasn’t included in the main dining rooms.

My friend ordered the beef short ribs, which was described on the menu as “Spicy Stout Beef Short Ribs with Stout Orange blossom glaze”

I wish I had taken a picture of her food. It was served in a dish that was like a footed ice cream sundae tulip-style dish. The beef short rib was indeed “short” because it was only about 4 inches long. Served standing straight up in the footed sundae-style glass it was very fancy but very small. And the menu said “ribs” and it was only one small, single rib. And no accompaniments except a very thin piping of mashed potato garnish around the top of the glass.

The sundae-style glass was served standing in the middle of a large white plate, which made it appear even smaller.

We looked at each other and almost laughed, as the amount of food wouldn’t even have
been an appetizer.

It wasn’t like she was going to go hungry as we were on a cruise ship with plenty of food. In fact I think we walked by the pizza slice place so she could grab a slice of pizza.

But it was a funny experience.

Salty Dog Gastropub isn't on newer ships that we've been on more recently. This venue has been replaced by O'Malley's Irish Pub/Sports Bar with its own specialty menu and live entertainment. We've sailed on Enchanted Princess twice but have not visited the pub restaurant yet as it is always packed. People are lined up 30 minutes before it opens and seem to hang out there for hours. The venue isn't large (maybe 50 or 60 seats), and turnaround is slow. Passengers enjoy the high-energy ambiance, pub grub, and Irish-themed entertainment. Yes, that is it! This restaurant was always packed on my first cruise and we weren’t able to get a reservation on any day. So I made it a point to get a reservation on this cruise.

We weren’t impressed with the Salty Dog Gastropub service either. Our reservation was at 5 pm, and when we walked in at about 5 till 5 the hostess rather snootily informed us that reservations were required and we couldn’t just walk in. I replied that we had a reservation and she looked it up and then seated us but didn’t apologize or even say another word to us.

And it wasn’t because we weren’t properly dressed either. So I’m not sure what her problem was.

It took a long time to get our food too, and our server was rather indifferent.

We thought it was strange because all our servers in the Main Dining Room and even servers in the pizza shop and the burger place were very enthusiastic and friendly.

Before we even got on the ship I told my friend that we HAD to be sure and get a reservation for Salty Dog Gastropub because I didn’t get to try it on my previous cruise. So she joked about it the rest of our cruise, teasing me because I had been so insistent about dining there.

She said to let her know if we were going to dine there again so she could grab a slice of pizza first : )

I just visited with a friend that is a fan of Viking Cruises. We have never taken a cruise but are considering it.

What are your thoughts comparing Viking to Princess?

Watching the cruise information with great curiosity, although I'd have to build my own raft to get anywhere, LOL. No cruises for me in the foreseeable future. An Alaska cruise has got to be the best, I wonder if you can see aurora borealis, I would think so??

I’ve seen aurora borealis before but not from the Alaskan cruise I was on in July.

When you book an Alaskan cruise you have to decide what your priorities are, because different months are good for different things. We went in July because our top priority was whale watching, and also July is usually less rainy and warmer than other months.

September and October cruises are better for seeing aurora borealis but often it rains, sometimes every day. I have talked to several people who took cruises in the past few weeks where the ship wasn’t able to dock on some of the ports due to bad weather conditions. So they missed their day in Juno and Ketchikan. And they said some days it was too cold, rainy, and windy to be out on the decks,

In July we didn’t have any rain, the weather was beautiful and we saw many whales.

My dad told me about a friend of his who went to Alaska to see Denali and the day they were supposed to see Denali it was so foggy that they literally could not see it at all. Another day Denali was completely covered in clouds. This was in October, which is supposed to be one of the best months to see aurora borealis.

So Alaska is unpredictable.

I put seeds in last week in my front beds. Almost everything is popping up!

The strawberry patch is now the zucchini patch. I’ve had so much trouble with powdery mildew out back, I thought I’d try a different bed out front. I’d really love to have a successful zucchini harvest.

I planted garbanzo beans for the first time! I put in 2 rows of dark color mix sunflowers. In front of them I planted a row of dill.

I planted mostly small yellow tomatoes in the corners of the arch beds. Under the arch I planted sugar snap peas.

I’m still working on the backyard beds, tilling the soil, removing the oak tree roots that love the garden beds, picking up debris the birds drop. I can’t decide if they’re grateful I fill the bird baths or they’re annoyed with me back there. One year they gave me a pack of mayo, and I hate mayo!

I found some sweet potatoes the other day. I think they’re more too. I’m going to go dig up the bed today. They’ve been growing for months and months. No idea if they’re any good or not.

I just visited with a friend that is a fan of Viking Cruises. We have never taken a cruise but are considering it.

What are your thoughts comparing Viking to Princess?
Viking is considered a premium cruise line, while Princess is more mainstream. We like the understated elegance of Princess ships, as well as the laid-back ambiance. There are few children when we cruise, and Princess cruises are fairly sedate without a party-like atmosphere. We have considered Viking but can cruise on Princess twice for the price of a single Viking cruise. We have elite status on Princess with 23 cruises to date and are entitled to some onboard perks that we enjoy. We get frequent mailings from Viking and do consider trying it someday. We have heard from people who cruise with Viking that everything is top-notch, but that comes with a hefty price tag :D

We did a 7-night Alaskan cruise in mid-September 2008. It was the final Alaskan voyage of the season on the original Star Princess, and we spent two nights in Seattle prior to embarkation. On the day that we were in Skagway, it reached 85* by mid- afternoon. Our tour bus driver told us that it was the hottest day that she had experienced since moving to Alaska a few years prior. It had been chilly when we disembarked, and we both wore sweatshirts. We were fine while we were in the air-conditioned tour bus but felt miserable when we stopped at various locations. We might as well have been in the Caribbean!

On a food note, we had amazing Alaskan salmon several nights onboard and ate reindeer chili in ports.
