He also noted that Turkey's actions were fully in line with the new rules of engagement adopted after Syria shot down a Turkish jet in 2012. The rules state that all "elements" approaching from Syria are considered an enemy threat.

Oh, ty, CARIIS

The map is most appreciated. Trying to keep track of geographical positions and alliances.

Yes, thanks Cariis, it's great.

You're absolutely right, Tadpole. As well as the geographical reference points, this map illustrates perfectly who the combatants are in this proxy war, as well their respective 'supporters', eg; 'red' vs 'blue'.

Turkey as 'wild card'?

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/22/b...ith-plan-for-gas-pipeline-to-turkey.html?_r=0

"Another potential sticking point is Turkey itself. For one thing, the country obtains about 60 percent of its gas from Russia, a dependence the government is not necessarily eager to increase."

"In other words, Turkey would become a middleman for Europe’s energy buyers, and it would be precisely the linchpin Moscow needs to keep an energy hold on the continent."

Why is the second link via google cache? Just curious.

Financial Times @FT

Just published: front page of the Financial Times international edition for November 27

Dutch PM Rutte:
"STEM FLOW OF MIGRANTS TO EU OR RISK FATE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE"

roman empire.jpg

http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/659694fe-9440-11e5-b190-291e94b77c8f.html#axzz3sdavWzPW

The EU risks suffering the same fate as the Roman empire if it does not regain control of its borders and stop the “massive influx” of refugees from the Middle East and central Asia, the Dutch prime minister has warned.

Mark Rutte, whose government assumes the EU’s rotating presidency in January, said southern EU countries had yet to implement policies agreed to stem the flow, which has exceeded 850,000 arriving by sea so far this year, according to the International Organisation for Migration.

Mr Rutte acknowledged the threat posed by “foreign fighters” — European nationals who have joined militants in Iraq and Syria — had risen, saying those returning from the war zone were now more lethal because they “really have been taught the most evil techniques” by extremist groups. Most of the Paris attackers are believed to have been French or Belgian nationals.

Bombs have never made friends as far as I understand.

However, I must say, I was really afraid of Macys parade, and then I am thinking maybe there really is something about our terrorist capabilities in New York.

Is someone gonna do something in Utah - could but I mean I really feared Macys today and all good

is that capability or noone tried?

If you look back at the first thread, I posted several times about Israel sharing info with France, Belgium, Germany and the US. From what I have read from several sources, they do share intel regarding terrorism.

First US soldiers arrive in Syria: Kurdish source

Agence France Presse
BEIRUT: U.S. soldiers are in Kobani, the town in northern Syria nearly destroyed in fierce fighting with ISIS, to train Kurdish forces to battle the extremists, Kurdish sources said Thursday.

Mustapha Abdi, an activist in the town on the Turkish border, told AFP the American instructors had arrived "in recent hours" in what is the first official deployment of U.S. ground troops in Syria.

A source with the Kurdish People's Protection Units said the Americans would help plan offensives on two Syrian cities held by ISIS -- Jarablus and the extremists' Syrian "capital", Raqqa.

Engineers of jihad: Why are so many engineers becoming Islamist terrorists in the Middle East?

Researchers from the European University Institute in Italy have found that a surprisingly large number of Islamic terrorists have engineering degrees – in fact, more than twice as many members of these terrorist groups have engineering degrees rather than degrees in Islamic Studies.

Renowned sociologist Diego Gambetta and associate professor Steffen Hertog have painstakingly gathered together data about the backgrounds of individuals belonging to a range of different terrorist groups in the Muslim world, and their research has revealed an interesting pattern.

Paris attacks: Salah Abdeslam 'phoned people for lift'

A friend of one of the main suspects still being hunted by police after the Paris attacks has said Salah Abdeslam phoned people in Brussels following the attacks and asked them to drive to get him.

The man, who did not want his identity to be known, told the BBC's Damian Grammaticas that he was also a close friend of Salah Abdeslam's brother Brahim. He said Brahim "wasn't obsessed" with Syria and "talked about getting married, having kids, but not blowing himself up".

I know Cracked isn't exactly MSM but this was an interesting read.

7 Things I Learned Reading Every Issue Of ISIS's Magazine

It includes What Scares Isis, They Are Unbelievably Media-savvy, Violent Reprisals Are Exactly What They Want, and this, from We Don't Really Understand How ISIS Sees The World:

But the most surprising thing I learned about ISIS during my reading is that the primary target of their hatred is not the United States. It's not France or Russia, either. The one "enemy" they devote more time to ranting against than anyone else is the "apostate Muslim." The vast majority of people ISIS kills are Muslims. They use one slur in particular -- "Safawi" -- to refer to Shiite Muslims. That word is a play on the name of the Safavid dynasty, which ruled Persia in the 15-17th centuries and which you almost certainly haven't heard of even though soldiers for the most notoriously evil organization in the world use it as a curse every day.

Some nsfw language.

We've just had our 'national security threat level' upgraded to 'probable' from 'high'; whatever that means. I'll have to look it up.

I have noticed uniformed police in their twos and threes, being more 'visible' than I'm used to; particularly in our major indoor shopping complexes.

I totally agree that bombs have never made friends:
