It's unbelievable to me that the amazing event in Paris yesterday can be twisted from a positive into a negative media campaign against Obama and the US. I don't know why I continue to be surprised by everything turning into an Obama slam. Have Americans nothing better to do?

I think if Americans felt they were disappointed, they can voice their opinion.

You raise an interesting point. Are those Russian made AK-47's sold in France or just smuggled in?

smuggled in containers is what I have read, bought in from Eastern Europe, conflict zones like Libya, Irak...apparently often in parts and assembled here.

My niece and nephew are cartoonists. They live in Angouleme France, ex-pats from NYC. The people murdered were their friends.

I'm so very sorry for your niece and nephew. :blowkiss:
I have a few friends who were personal friends too, discovered that on FB

That was more my interpretation too when I first heard of these "no go zones".

Does the government in France allow them to pracitce Sharia law and have Sharia Courts in them?
Meaning, do they allow them to carry out sentences against their own people?

Or is it maybe done under-the-table and the government is aware and they dont do anything about it?

They have their own laws in their head only and impose it on their families and peers out of pressure. I have never heard anything of the sort that they were allowed to have sharia court, I very very much doubt that but now you've said that I'm getting a panicky stomach feeling and will read up to check that. They are very much required to follow French values. Women are not allowed to drive or present themselves in public places in full veil and are systematically fined for it. No signs of any religion whatsoever including Christian crosses or Jewish caps are allowed in schools or educational institutions of any sort. French law is imposed nationwide with no exceptions and it forbids distinguishing citizens according to their faith. To the point that census polls do not include religion and it's hard to know precise numbers of muslims, there is no official statistical data on their numbers.
Sadly things can get pretty horrific for neighbours and young women in some of the most intense housing projects. Young girls I've heard will get pregnant and settle down early just to get the guys off their backs for heavily controlling what they wear who they see to the point of terrorising them. And it's not just young gang thugs. There are associations, one based in Seine Saint Denis, presiding over several mosques, that wants to push for return to sharia law, pushing to prevent depiction of prophet, have male only and female only swimming pools, stopping police from enforcing law against the veil, encouraging polygamy. I don't know what this means for the government and what they are going to do about it.

We all marched yesterday in unity, I marched among muslims, I marched among people of all origins and political leanings. The question now is how do we maintain that unity. How do we protect French values while remaining a welcoming country and rich in cultural diversity. The divisions building up are scary.
Yesterday was so very powerful. I marched with all of Paris, we all had to go. I felt like we were making history and it felt therapeutic to be as one in mourning and indignation. But what now?

Just an observation regarding security at the event, I noticed something interesting. There were many empty balconies of the rows of apartments that overlooked the square near where that statue was. The area where that statue where people were hanging onto the statue.

I am wondering if police had a security policy during the event to not allow people on their own balconies. There were some, but very few. I think of the few who were seen on the balconies, I think some of those looked like police too. They were mostly empty balconies.

My mother said the exact same thing you noticed too. But I felt like there were loads of people on balconies. I saw many. I think they might just have been out with us! Everyone I mean everyone who could walk and was not at work was seemingly there. The police were on many rooftops and in top level apartments. Also if you meant Republique square most of the buildings around the square are predominantly offices.

I have not heard any complaints from anyone about lack of US dignitaries at the march.
People were touched by John Kerry's beautiful speech given in perfect French very soon after the initial attack.

Thank you Waddles. I felt like it was CNN who made it into an issue when it wasn't one, with Jake Tapper starting the harping on it during the broadcast of such a beautiful, peaceful, amazing demonstration of unity. I lost a ton of respect for that network yesterday. They couldn't let a beautiful thing just be.

Debate on France 24 saying we need to reteach secularism. Muslim spokeswoman replying secularism is taught well but Muslims feel like they are being oppressed by it, that they have to hide, that being told they can't wear veils etc is going against them. This is creating a rejection of French system.

Hmmm yes but where do we go from here?
