It's unbelievable to me that the amazing event in Paris yesterday can be twisted from a positive into a negative media campaign against Obama and the US. I don't know why I continue to be surprised by everything turning into an Obama slam. Have Americans nothing better to do?

Very much agree with you!

It is unbelievable and embarrassing to me that we would not send someone and not realize how horrible it looks.

I see no criticism in French media about lack of American dignitaries. In fact I've seen it referred to as representatives from America, and then the list of the countries present. No mention of the level of person sent being insufficient. I really wouldn't worry about that guys, I do get what you're saying though.

I would not be as upset about it but for 9/11.

Debate on France 24 saying we need to reteach secularism. Muslim spokeswoman replying secularism is taught well but Muslims feel like they are being oppressed by it, that they have to hide, that being told they can't wear veils etc is going against them. This is creating a rejection of French system.

Hmmm yes but where do we go from here?

This is the usual BS, the eternal self-victimization.

Nothing wrong with rejecting the French system. If you reject it, accept the consequences of your own choice and don't live in France.
There are places in the world that welcome you if you want to cover up from head to toe.

French news saying the arsenal of weapons were from Soviet origins. Intending to tighten border controls for arms smuggling.
Also talking about better support for released prisoners to lessen the likelihood of them falling prey to jihadist training recruiters.

Remember the video of the guy who ran out of the grocery before it was all over? Turns out it was the store clerk who put the folks in the freezer:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...o-save-seven-jews/?tid=hybrid_control_strip_1

Wow what a story!
I saw the video at the time, but I wasn't aware who that man was. The man from Mali:

[...] someone had to get word to the police. The shop was barricaded with metal blinds, and Coulibaly bragged to cops he had already killed four people and was planning on shooting more. So Bathily came up with a plan. He said they could get out through a fire escape to speak to police. According to Bathily, he asked others to come with him, but they declined, worried the gunman would hear them.

Bathily slipped out of the basement and walked out of the building to meet police, who initially thought he was perhaps an accomplice. They ordered him to lie down and put his hands behind his head. The moment’s drama was captured by French television station Europe 1:

(video)

Bathily spent the next 90 minutes in cuffs before he managed to convince authorities he was who he said he was. He told the cops he wasn’t alone. There were more than a dozen other hostages locked inside the store’s freezer. And what’s more, he said, he had something that could help French forces break into the kosher mart: a key to unlock the supermarket’s metal blinds. That key and information about the store’s layout he provided to police would prove invaluable, police officials told the Associated Press. They could barge through the market’s front door without putting the hostages in more danger, he told them.

And that’s exactly what the police did, soon killing the gunman.

Jewish people interviewed outside the supermarket came to see the Israeli president lay flowers. They are saying they won't leave. this is their country.
The community is very worried though clearly.

Hi SStarr33, sorry for the delayed response, I needed a good rest after that!
Well there are destitute suburban housing projects where unemployed second and third generation teenagers rule their apartment block, turn to more extreme ideas, terrorise their neighbours, control their sisters' movements and police have been frequently said in the past to steer clear of them and are afraid to even go. Places like Seine Saint Denis where the kids were from who were quoted as saying the cartoonists had it coming. But the specialised forces do still go in all the time, it's a daily war, so not a no go zone I would say. Insight: http://www.lefigaro.fr/actualite-fr...5-dans-l-enfer-du-93-moi-flic-de-banlieue.php

No worries Waddle. Thank you for the response.

I don't have a problem with immigrants living together in certain parts of a city/country. I do have a problem with them being allowed to follow their own laws, not being fluent in the language of the country they are living in, and sucking benefits off of taxpayers.

The news tonight showing us all thanking the police yesterday at the march. The police saying they are touched by the support.
The snipers were waving back at us from rooftops as marchers chanted their thanks to them and officers on the ground timidly thanking marchers for their support. It was really special to see.

The thing coming out of all the debates on all the different channels I'm watching is where do we go from here, how can we move forward? How can we maintain solidarity when we are a very divided society.

Does US cable TV include access to BBC international, Aljazeera English and France 24 English? Watching really interesting debate of French young spokespeople from across society on Aljazeera, representatives of Muslim, Jewish and non-religious citizens. Really interesting and intelligent debate.

The Associated Press ‏@AP

BREAKING: White House says it erred in not sending higher level official to anti-terror march in Paris.

BBM

Predict Abbott to come out with mirror statement today, because you know, Australia cannot think for itself and must do everything the US does including not send a high ranking official also ..

Interesting about ISIS hacking the twitter account though yes?

I can't seem to decide since the march yesterday if France is more united or more divided !

Ah, that is a good question. But at the spontaneous gatherings I attended at Republique on Wednesday and Thursday of all walks of life and all political leanings judging from conversations I overheard, the solidarity was just amazing to experience. The collective outrage and support of each other is amazing. Yesterday's march was sort of collective therapy at the shock at what had happened to us.
I do share your uncertainty though and fear the aftermath of the attacks might be further division... but I am certain that the march itself has not caused division. I have never really felt like I was a Parisian until this week and now I suddenly understand I am. Half French New Zealander born in Belfast and spending the first 24 years of my life in New Zealand, Paris was a culture shock for years. For many years I was happy here, living an international life with my loved one American and my best friends Irish or Australian yet I struggled with cultural differences and I couldn't bring myself to call this beautiful city home when people asked. The events of this week and the gathering have flicked the switch in my brain and I know I belong here now.
