Well I personally think that the problem is an intersection of a common way that peoples' brains malfunction (paranoid delusions) combined with modern click baiting social media. There are a significant number of people out there who because of a chemical imbalance feel like there is something wrong even if there isn't and when they go looking to figure out what it is, they find organized conspiracy theory. The theories that are the most compelling get the most clicks from that demographic and that causes the algorithms to generate more of that type of content and gradually sharpen it into a point. How many of these conspiracy theorists are there, and how to they get that way?
Unless something shifts about the algorithms to make positivity more compelling than negativity, something is eventually going to have to give. Probably quantum computing allowing artificial intelligence that will be able to babysit us - or at least the ways we communicate in groups.
