@no nonsense, Jinx! lol

Now, don’t pull a switcheroo. :) I was replying to your comment about the GEORGIA indictments. You said: “ABC News has multiple reporters covering it because it is so obviously political.” I simply challenged your assertion that multiple reporters indicated that the Georgia indictments are political. My reply had nothing to do with Jack Smith’s investigation. In the past I recall that you indicated that you did not believe Smith was political in contrast to Willis, but I guess now that’s changed. However, Smith’s investigation is OT for this thread, so we won’t continue discussing the news media’s request here. It belongs on the Smith thread.

BBM. Yes, my opinion about Smith has changed. I didn't realize Garland didn't name Special Prosecutor Smith until one week after Trump announced he was a 2024 candidate. The timing smacks of politics directly from the White House.

The media want the information unsealed about Trump's Twitter account. The Georgia indictments used Twitter information in the indictment of 19 people.

The law is the law no matter what court is involved. I think an overwhelming majority of the public and the press all want TRANSPARENCY in our courts. I made it clear it was my opinion. I'm glad there will be cameras in the courtroom in the Georgia case.

Fulton County, Ga., District Attorney Fani Willis (D) noted 12 of former President Trump’s tweets as part of her case charging Trump for his efforts to remain in power following the 2020 election.

The indictment lists more than 150 alleged acts that prosecutors say all contributed to a conspiracy to overturn Georgia’s election results, and a dozen of them comprised a Trump tweet.

The fact that Garland appointed a special prosecutor after Trump announced his candidacy is the exact OPPOSITE of politics. Because Trump was now a candidate Garland felt it was appropriate to move the investigations from the DOJ to an independent prosecutor.

And having an independent prosecutor also argues against the claim by the OP that “The timing smacks of politics directly from the White House.”

And Jack Smith would have been an awfully poor choice as Special Counsel if anyone wanted a specific or 'crooked' persecution of DT. The fact that he is unbiased and unaligned made him an excellent choice. imo

Smith has previously served as the chief of public integrity for the US justice department and dealt in particular with cases involving corruption, bringing cases against prominent Republicans and Democrats.

He is a registered independent, not aligned with either of the two dominant political parties in the US.

Smith said: “I intend to conduct the assigned investigations, and any prosecutions that may result from them, independently and in the best traditions of the Department of Justice. The pace of the investigations will not pause or flag under my watch. I will exercise independent judgment and will move the investigations forward expeditiously and thoroughly to whatever outcome the facts and the law dictate.”

Funny (kind of) side note. I was watching Fulton County Bond Hearings this morning. One of the defendants was alleged to be a gang member and was involved in a violent attack with multiple charges. In the hearing the Prosecution asked for a very high bond. The Defense Attorney argued that the bond was unrealistic since DJT’s bond was only $200k. The Pros snapped back “he’s not the leader of a violent street gang.” Def quickly responded, “ That’s debatable.”
I don’t want to put the the link bc the stream will be deleted is a few days. If you want to see it, it is Judge Alex Manning on YouTube. The stream should be bond hearings for 8/21/23.

I think it's gone already. :(

A former president has been indicted for multiple felonies for the first time in the nation's 247 year history. Of course there's going to be intense media interest! It's kind of silly, in my opinion, to assume that's indicative of anything other than it's incredibly newsworthy.

The media always, always attempts to get more information than is released - especially in high profile cases - and any prosecutor worth his or her salt will do their level best to protect the integrity of the case which means not handing everything over to the media - that's kinda why we have trials.

It feels sometimes like the common knowledge that comes with following true crime is totally suspended on the Trump threads. How many people here have actively followed trials? And are any of the actions of any of the officers of the court in any way egregious to the norm?

The justice department, the multiple prosecutors, and even the judges have contorted themselves into pretzels to give Trump extremely preferential treatment compared to a standard criminal defendant and yet he's being politically persecuted? What's the statistical probability that dozens of people (investigators, prosecutors, grand jurors, judges) all collaborated in a plot against Trump vs. Trump et al did indeed actually break several laws and there is ample and abundant evidence to warrant multiple indictments?

And as an aside, bringing a case against a former president that wasn't as close to rock solid as possible would be a career killer.

How is she a "failed district attorney"?
Completely ignoring the Trump issues…The backlog in Fulton is of epic proportions.
They started 2022 with a backlog of approx 140,000 cases. Currently there are approx 35,000.
This is despite creating a special initiative, hiring retired Judges whose sole purpose is to hear these cases and clear this backlog.
One of the major reasons it hasn’t been cleared quicker is delays from the prosecutors office. I’ve mentioned it before in the thread related to the inmate death, but you frequently see bond hearings with defendants who have been incarcerated for up to 700 days without indictment.
Yet, they have tied up half a dozen prosecutors and 20+ defense attorneys who they failed to secure adequate compensation for, in the YSL trial to prove one fAmous rapper may or may not have been connected to the murder of one person. In a county where there were just under 3500 murders last year within Atl city limits alone.
So….while I wouldn’t use the term “failed” because of the finality it implies, she’s definitely not getting any smiley face stickers on her report card IMO.

Thanks for posting this interesting link. Perhaps I’m not interpreting the graphs correctly, but it looks as if the various courts are on track for clearing their cases before the deadline. I realize the graphs don’t paint the full picture of Fani Willis’s performance that locals see and that you point out. I expect that many areas of the country are scrambling to play catch-up after covid-related delays and “the jury is out” on how well they’re doing in Fulton county and elsewhere. If I were the newly-elected Fani Willis, the Trump election investigation would be the last thing I’d want to tackle while trying to clear the covid backlog of cases. But it would have been dereliction of duty to ignore it. So I have to hand it to her for trying to juggle it all, even if she has to sacrifice smiley face stickers on her report card for the time being. :)

"In a Monday filing made in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Shafer’s attorneys maintain, 'Mr. Shafer and the other Republican Electors in the 2020 election acted at the direction of the incumbent President and other federal officials.'” bbm

Shafer is the GOP chair in Georgia. He is trying to move the case to federal court. I don't think it will work. imo. It was a presidential election, but each state is in charge of their elections and Shafer was involved the fake elector scheme to steal votes specifically from Georgians who voted in Georgia.

Looks like some defendants will be turning on Trump.

One prosecutor in one county is absolutely not, can not possibly, be responsible for all the ills of the current state of the criminal justice system especially considering the recent pandemic, the fact she inherited a backlog, and she's even had to beg county commissioners for funding.

And in all honestly I'm kinda ambivalent about Willis - I think it's remarkable she's the first woman in her office and I admire her willingness to pursue justice even at her peril BUT she's a prosector like thousands of other prosecutors that have tried cases I've followed along with and I neither know nor really care to do a deep dive into her life history. I just want her to do her job and follow the letter of the law to hopefully gain convictions for what I personally deem to be one of the worst crimes of the modern era. All that said, I just do not get the vitriol directed towards her. What makes her different than Alvin Bragg, Tish James and Jack Smith's team? Why aren't their cases seen as a plot to befall Trump too?

You say one of the reasons it hasn't been cleared quicker is because of delays from the DA's office but according to the graph in your link - the district attorney began with 16,300 open and active cases and currently has 1,723 (I excluded the numbers for Superior Court, State Court, Magistrate Court and the Solicitor General because why would they be included in the prosecutor's perview anyway?). I mean, I think that's actually pretty good all things considered? But maybe I'm reading it wrong.
