GA GA - Janice Hughes, 30, Macon, 8 June 1991

Thank you so much. I'm pretty much healed (as much as I'm gonna, LOL) now, but have eye dr. appt. next week to get new contacts and glasses. I made the mistake that many caregivers do, I'm afraid, and let some of my own needs go unattended for too long, until I did some damage. It's gonna be OK though!

Kept wanting to come back to this! Thankfully I was under 45 when I was a caregiver to my dad (cancer 05/06) & hub 9/09. I am disabled due to a failed fusion that I regret having "fixed" a few months after my dad passed. You are so right! You're so busy caring for the person that you do not want to step away or you do not have time to call for appts for yourself.

I emailed Pam to see what's up. Will see if she answers me. I don't remember Tracie Vicents taking this long.

Once Latvia's DNA sample gets taken; it will tell if any of the Jane Doe's in NamUs/ CODIS are her mom. I'm looking over NamUs

NamUs UP # 653 - Probable year of death 1990 to 1996 - recon available
NamUs UP # 504 - Probable year of death 1991 to 2002
NamUs UP # 779 - Probable year of death 1950 to 2007

Here's a link to information about some Georgia unidentified remains, listed on the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) web site. I will look a bit later to see if just by chance any sound like a possibility for Janice. Linking it here in case anybody else wants to look as well:

Am not seeing any to compare at this link

Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance
• Missing Since: June 8, 1991 from Macon, Georgia
• Classification: Endangered Missing
• Date of Birth: February 28, 1961
• Age: 30 years old
• Distinguishing Characteristics: African-American female. Black hair, brown eyes.

Details of Disappearance
Hughes was last seen in Macon, Georgia on June 8, 1991. She called her mother at 1:00 a.m. to say she was coming over, but never arrived and has never been heard from again. She was reported missing on June 22, two weeks after her disappearance.

Hughes's live-in boyfriend last saw her at 10:00 p.m. on June 7, a few hours before she called her mother. They lived in the 1500 block of Oglethorpe Street. Hughes asked him for $10 before she left. She also took his gun, something he didn't realize at the time. He later found the gun at another house. Hughes's boyfriend is now deceased. The couple had a history of domestic violence in their relationship, and Hughes's mother believed he was involved in her disappearance, but he has never been named as a suspect. Authorities believe she could have been the victim of a serial killer, but little evidence is available in her case.

The now-deceased boyfriend does sound somewhat suspicious, IMO. If his story about the gun and finding it later at another house is true, wonder how he happened to find it at that house? Sure hope LE checked out "that house" and its residents back then.

Regarding the possibility of a serial killer: The article from Macon's The Telegraph with which I opened this thread also discusses that LE theory:
...Barbee surmises Janice Hughes might have fallen victim to a serial killer preying on women. But without a body, further evidence or a confession, he can’t be sure.

Alfred Lundy, a convicted killer on parole, was found guilty of two slayings and was a suspect in other killings at about the same time, Barbee said.

“When Janice went missing, we had a lady killed on Oliver Street and hid in a burned out house and a lady killed downtown and thrown in a dumpster,” Barbee said.

In 1993, Lundy was found guilty of beating and strangling Pamela Moore to death on Oct. 16, 1991, and hiding her partially nude body in an abandoned house on Oliver Street.

Marie Hollingshed was found dead May 16, 1992, in a trash bin near the old Town Pavilion Hotel on Broadway near Walnut Street.

Hughes and Saundra Finney*, a 20-year-old woman who disappeared from Poplar Street on Valentines Day in 1992, have never been found, Barbee said.

“It’s our belief these women were killed and dumped in a dumpster and carried off before we even heard about them being missing,” Barbee said....

I hope Lundy was at least questioned about Janice -- though likely he wouldn't talk, IMO.

I found this 1995 Georgia Supreme Court document concerning the decision regarding Lundy and his appeal of his 1993 convictions of two murders and two consecutive life sentences (convictions and sentences were upheld):

http://leagle.com/decision/1995295265Ga30_1280.xml/LUNDY v. STATE

As I understand from this, the appeal was arguing that the two murders for which he was convicted should not have been tried together. And ALSO that his prior guilty plea to a very similar 1972 murder should not have been admitted into the 1993 trial. The information given about that 1972 murder is that it was very similar to what is described for the 1990s murders (see the link for more details on those):

...The trial court did not err in admitting as similar transaction evidence Lundy's 1972 guilty plea to the manual strangulation death of another woman, with whom he had a sexual relationship and whose nude and beaten body he dumped in a storage bin. ...

Also, some dates from a footnote to the document:

Moore was killed on November 16, 1991, and Hollingshed was killed on May 16, 1992. Lundy was indicted for Moore's murder on January 15, 1993, and for Hollingshed's murder on March 22, 1993. Following a jury trial in Bibb County Superior Court, Lundy was sentenced on July 1, 1993 to two consecutive life sentences. Lundy filed a motion for new trial on July 21, 1993, which the trial court denied on April 4, 1994. Lundy filed a notice of appeal on April 11, 1994. The appeal was docketed in this court on May 9, 1994, and submitted without oral argument on July 5, 1994.

*Sad that, other than in the article about Janice, I cannot find any MSM or other linkable info that mentions Saundra Finney, the other missing woman who was never found. If I could find a little more I would start a thread for her as well.

I have an email ready to send Pam about Saundra Finney. Hopefully she can get the needed info into NamUs

I was a victim of DV around the time Janice went missing. I find it highly unlikely that she escaped DV to be killed by a serial killer. I think that she called her mom; she & her BF got into an argument; I think the BF shot her. I wish his hands would have been tested for gun shot residue back then. I find it interesting that he said she stole his gun yet it was found. Too bad he's deceased.

I do not think Janice left her kids to start over.

*Sorry for multiple posts. Daughters college is finally over!

Was Carl's recon of what she would look like now or in 91 as the last picture known was 10 years earlier?

The mugshot is from 1988. Carl's recon is what she would look like now

Wonder if Sandra has any siblings? Sounds like that's what it will take to get her entered. Had Latvia not done the story & gotten the files, Janice wouldn't be in NamUs either. Right now it is not a law to enter cases. That is why I advocate for Billy's Law

bbm: I have no idea. After I saw her name mentioned in that one spot, just a mention in the article about Janice, I did some online searching and, IIRC, I couldn't find ANYthing else about her (Saundra's) death or her case.

Well, we'll keep crossing our fingers that her family sees our posts.

Well, when it rains, it pours -- first the eye thing with me, then a respiratory ailment that sent the family member for whom I'm caregiver to the hospital (home now) and knocked me really low as well (getting better now). But haven't forgotten Janice nor Lataviahughes!

Checking the NamUs link Roselvr posted, looks as if it still isn't fully active yet...?

Are you feeling any better yet?
Want to apologize that I've been typing Latvia instead of Latavia!
Latavia hit me up on FB last week to ask how will she know when they're ready to take her DNA sample. I then did a 3 way email with Latavia, Pam & myself to introduce Pam & Latavia & ask about her DNA sample. Pam apologized that everything has taken so long, she was out of the office for most of June due to work. Latavia gave Pam the needed info so that Pam can request LE by Latavia to take her sample. Janice's NamUs profile is not online yet, hopefully it won't take much longer. I had checked one of my other cases Tracie Vicent (WS thread); her profile went online within 10 days. I could not check my 2nd case, Chris Sexton because he was found deceased, I'm not able to see his profile any more. I recently entered Kimberly Cozart 6/15/2015; she is a minor, it will take time before she goes online. NCMEC has it

Yes, thanks Roselvr -- things do seem to be mending here. Was one heck of a month though! Not just me and my family member sick, but also refrigerator went on the blink, ac broke down during terrible heat wave, lawnmower has gotten something amiss so that it keeps throwing its belt...arggh! Gradually getting things back together though, and my family member finished with post-hospital home healthcare/therapy on Thursday. So I hope for a calmer spell...and I AM feeling better, which helps most of all.

Glad to hear that some tangles are getting smoothed out with the DNA sample, etc. -- I am so glad Latavia has you to help! (And I know you are a big help to many others, as well.) I check the thread often to see any update or news.

Lataviahughes, I have seen some information snippets about your mom on a few "missing persons" websites that say she may have been heading to Brunswick (I know that's where you and your siblings were and that she was expected to come visit soon) and even one that said she was last seen at a bus station, possibly heading to Brunswick. Do you know--is there any truth to these reports?

I've been meaning to ask and what made me finally post was that I read that skeletal remains have recently been discovered in the Brunswick area. Even if your mom WAS heading to Brunswick, I doubt that this would be her, after so long a time, but I will link a couple of articles anyhow:

Quoting my post about this just to add a bit of an update (bbm in the quote):

[h=1]Police still trying to ID skeletal remains
[/h]...Evidence collected near the remains is being investigated at the Glynn County Police crime lab, police chief Matt Doering said.

“Right now we’re processing the evidence and focusing on identifying who this person is,” Doering said. “We suspect it’s a male based on some of the evidence found at the scene.”...

Latavia, you're talking about Anthony Road and Telfair Street in Macon, right? Are you saying that your mom was seen there AFTER what was presumably the last previously known sighting of her? Or are you just saying that was an area she frequented?

Yes anthony road and Telfair street in Macon. She was seen walking that way before she went missing. The person that to me he seen my mom when he was a young man

We can add those years to the yearbook searches then!

Someone she grow up with also said his mother told him. That my mother and Jack McCory (the live in boyfriend) got.into a fight and that was the last time anyone seen my mother
