Just found out that my mother never brought a bus ticket

If it is OK to ask, how did you find that out?

The whole was-she-or-was-she-not seen at the bus station thing has me a little confused.

Is the DNA sample thing progressing, Lataviahughes? (again, if it is OK for me to ask)

My cousin that was older than me at the time told me.she never was at the bus station or got a ticket. He also said my grandmother that a private detective and was on unsolved mysteries

Well, that is pretty interesting. Almost makes it seem like someone might have been spreading the rumor that she was seen at the station, etc., on purpose, to throw off the trail...? But I don't know -- that line of thought could have just started because it was known that she had been planning to visit where you were soon.

If her case was on Unsolved Mysteries, maybe we can find the episode. I haven't seen anything in a quick search, but that doesn't mean much. Also, it could have been a different, but similar show...

Oh, OK -- I don't know if you hadn't told us that before or I had just forgotten, but that does make it clearer where the story about the bus station came from! That had to be so hard, Lataviahughes, thinking your mother was on her way to visit and then she vanishes.... Hugs to you.

I do remember that in the macon.com article at the first of this thread, your grandmother said something like your mom had called and said she was coming over but didn't show up. I know your grandmother was/is from Macon --was she also visiting at your aunt's with you kids and talking about the same phone call as when you answered the phone? Or was she in Macon and received a separate phone call?

The phone call you answered, when your mom mentioned coming on the bus -- do you remember for sure that it was right before she went missing?

Just trying to get all this straight in my mind.

Yay! I am so pleased Janice has made it into NamUs. Sounds like DNA is at least in the works, too...? I think of Janice's case and of Latavia very often.

One thing is puzzling me -- never noticed before, but on her Charley Project, under investigating agency, it says: "If you have any information concerning this case, please contact:
Springdale Police Department 724-274-9022".
Huh...? That can't be right, can it? Shouldn't it be the Bibb County Sheriff's Department, as on NamUs? (Originally it was Macon PD, but that department is no more, after a city/county merger.)

  • #109
After you pointed that out, I remembered that Springdale is in Pennsylvania and the area code of 724 is for that state. Kathleen Kelly disappeared from there and her case-file was added the same day (or around) as Janice's. Might explain why the contact information is the same for both.

Ok i might be wrong but do anyone think he could have killed my mother and put her body in the back yard or somewhere close by where nobody would every think to look. I know the house they was living in is about to blocks from abandoned road where their isn't any houses just woods and the railroad tracks

I think if your mother was murdered, yes, it could be that her killer did something like that. Close by, as you describe, or farther away, just depending on a lot of factors. It sure would have been good if some searches of that area had been done back then... but I guess LE wasn't looking in that direction, apparently.

That is one reason, of course, that it was so important for her info to get into NamUs, in case she is deceased and her remains should be found somewhere -- and sure hoping LE (law enforcement) is working together with you/your family to get the DNA samples going, so she could be matched if that should happen. I know that working toward that has to be a grim reminder for you and your grandmother and probably for your sisters, too (even if they "seem" disinterested) about the loss of your mom from your lives and the terrible shadow of what may have happened to her. But then, too, I feel, from what you have posted, Lataviahughes, that if she should be found deceased, you would want to know and be able to bring her home, back to her family.

Did her boyfriend claim that he last saw her at their home? (I'm thinking he did...?)

I just want to say Thanks guys for all your help

Wish we could do more, Lataviahughes.

Are you getting anywhere with some of the other stuff you have mentioned ... getting your siblings interested, talking to the guy who was in the hospital a while back, etc.?

I am sorry, Latavia, that you didn't get a chance to speak with the man before he died.

First of all Latavia, I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what you and your family has had to go through.
Secondly - have you guys been able to rule out these unidentified remains?
https://identifyus.org/en/cases/653

The weight, height, missing date range, and age at death all matches up.
Plus she had surgery prior to death (exact surgery not stated)

What do you guys think?

Latavia, sending hugs. I know that giving a DNA sample is very emotional. My 1st case that I entered in NamUs, it took months before it happened. Her daughter was going to do it, she is very much like you. The only child "speaking" for their missing mother. Then 2 other daughters were going to donate; her sister... It didn't happen. LE ended up showing up at her mothers house. That's how it got taken. Can you imagine? It was a horrible experience for them.

I hope Marsha was able to help you. Marsha is a very special person, her mom Victoria Prokopovitz has been missing since April 2013, Marsha is a power house, keeping her moms story on social media. She does fund raisers for a reward fund.

She is on our list. It's going to take a few months for Latavia's DNA to process. The Does on the list all have DNA, so we're just going to have to wait & see.

Let's all send hugs and prayers to Latavia and hold off on posting more Doe's. This is a very emotional time for her, especially with the holidays.

Once Latvia's DNA sample gets taken; it will tell if any of the Jane Doe's in NamUs/ CODIS are her mom. I'm looking over NamUs

NamUs UP # 653 - Probable year of death 1990 to 1996 - recon available
NamUs UP # 504 - Probable year of death 1991 to 2002
NamUs UP # 779 - Probable year of death 1950 to 2007
