On the DeKalb County Police Facebook page there is a comment by KT that gives a link to a public FB group. I'm not bringing the link here because I don't know who the admin's are. There is comment at that link that gives a small, but important, bit of information. There is also a brief comment by someone who may be J'Asiah's mother.

does the homicide unit typically work abductions?

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances leading up to the kidnapping. Police ask anyone who has seen Mitchell to call 911 or the police’s Homicide Assault Unit at (770) 724-7850.

I've got a sick feeling. Based on what we aren't being told.

I have seen cases before where certain LE has stated that homicide works MP investigations.

I had a friend who lived above his recording studio on Flat Shoals in Decatur. He moved a few years ago, but I'd say depending on what you're involved with, an armed robbery would not be shocking in the area. I'm not convinced that's what happened in this case, though.

following Cody Alcorn of 11alive's coverage n social media. He has given some interesting info on FB about when the GBI signed the missing child advisory this morning. Also the exact address of where the alleged abduction took place. It appears to be an apartment complex or group of complexes, a rather large one.

I hope this dear child is located safe and that there is ample CCTV in the area where he went missing to unravel what has happened. Godspeed to LE.

  • #26
Who takes a child during a robbery? That doesn't make any sense at all. I hope this little guy is safe wherever he is. I hope LE is successful in bringing him home soon.

So what are the chances that a deal went bad, and J'asiah was taken for security?

From what I can gather kids are usually off limits though aren't they?

MOO slim to none. I suspect maybe Ja'siah was expected somewhere today and it looks like maybe he wont be making it due to his abduction. :(

I hope LE has a much better idea of what is going on here than we the public do. I really would like this little one to be safe somewhere.

UPDATE | 2-year-old's alleged kidnapping 'cannot be verified,' DeKalb police say. DeKalb County police need help finding 2-year-old Josiah Mitchell, who they said was kidnapped from an area along Flat Shoals Road in Panthersville. The details of his alleged kidnapping cannot be verified, police said Thursday.

The last thing most people making “deals” want would be a toddler to care for.

In a few cases I've followed, the homicide department does take on missing persons/abductions.
In this case, it's unclear but they do seem to be lumped in together

Seems to be a regular true crime fan of some sort that's set up that page, so yeah, not linkable I think?

mum's cousin? I think it is anyway is certainly making her opinion very clear. pics of him on mum's page are very cute, I had a big cheesy grin looking at them.

how I wish this boy was safe, I sadly don't think he's still with us :(

J’Asiah was staying with his father Wednesday night, when he claims armed robbers took the child at gunpoint, the tot’s mother, Asia Mitchell, told Channel 2 Action News.

Police have not confirmed that information.

“A car pulled out in front of him and had him at gunpoint, and took my baby because they couldn’t take anything from him … that’s the story that him and his mom were telling me,” the distraught parent explained to the network.

Authorities are questioning J’Asiah’s father to get a better understanding of the situation, she claimed.

Maybe. Just looked up the criteria for Georgia:

Activation Criteria

Before Levi's Call can be activated, the following Alert Criteria must be met:

  • Law enforcement officials have a reasonable belief that an abduction has occurred.
  • Law enforcement officials believe that the child is in imminent danger or serious bodily injury or death.
  • Enough descriptive information exists about the victim and the abductor for law enforcement to issue a Levi's Call: Georgia's AMBER Alert.
  • The victim of the abduction is a child age 17 years or younger.
  • The child's name and other critical data elements - including the child abduction (CA) and AMBER Alert (AA) flags - have been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system.

emphasis by me. Guess we know why this case didn't qualify for the Amber Alert.

TRANSCRIPT OF INTERVIEW WITH MUM

17TH AUGUST

REPORTER
- This is a very fluid situation and even J'asiah's mother says she's working to learn exactly what happened, but right now her main focus is bringing J'asiah home safely. What we do know is that she told us J'asiah was staying with his father, when his father reported that an armed robbery happened and armed robbers stole J'asiah at gunpoint.

Right now police are frantically looking for him, as the family is hoping to get answers and hoping to find him safe.

MUM - Please, just please, just bring my baby back home to me.

REPORTER - 2 yr. old J'asiah Mitchell's mother is trying to keep it together, while not knowing where her only child could be.

MUM - He's only 2, he don't know what's going on, because I really don't know what's going on. I'm just confused as he is, and he's probably scared as I am.

REPORTER - DeKalb County Police are investigating the circumstances that led to what they say is a kidnapping. Mitchell's mother says J'asiah was staying with her father, Wednesday night, when he told police, armed robbers took the 2 yr. old.

MUM - He was leaving, like stopping at the stop sign or whatever like that and a car pulled out in front of him and had him at gunpoint and took my baby because they couldn't take anything from him. Obviously, that's what the story that him and his mom was telling me.

REPORTER - The boy's father told police it happened at around 11:30 last night on Flat Shoals Road near (?) Rd.

J'asiah's mother says police are questioning the father to try and learn more about the circumstances, but she's most focused on bringing J'asiah home safe.

MUM - I've been up crying, worrying, I've been praying. I've been praying to say my baby get home safe, bring him back to me, unharmed.

So, please look out and see if you see him.
