GA - Pit Bull Attack on 8yo girl, details during trial

Yep.

And can we also agree that pits kill more people each year than any other breed even though they make up only about 5% of the dog population?
It's fact.

I cannot agree with a "fact" that is presented by a staff writer of a non MSM publication.

Most pit attacks are attacks on their owners. Those same owners that never thought their dog would attack.

IMO those who have children should NEVER own pits.

It only takes a split second to realize you were wrong and it's too late.

Is it worth the risk? Not for me.

Of course. I'll dig for more links.

BTW the info from my link came from DogsBite.org, a national dog bite victims' group dedicated to reducing serious dog attacks.

There are photos and info for each victim.

I read that site a few weeks back. Some of the stuff on there was absolutely horrifying.

My pit bull is the best dog I have ever been around. Everyone who comes here loves him and wants him. I have had people who felt as strongly against pits as some here actually come to my home and fall in love with my dog.

The reason many people use pit bulls to fight is because they are so loyal they will do anything to please their person. And because they are so strong. My dog is one solid muscle. When my husband trained him, and made himself the "pack" leader, he was so easy to train. If hubby could make him understand what he wanted, pit bull would do it. Still does. He is so obedient that I truly believe if he was starving to death and my hubby told him no, he would not eat.

I realize there are many horror stories regarding certain breeds. And I think if you don't want a pit bull then don't get one. But I think it is very unfair to paint a whole breed with the same brush. Just as there are differences in people, there are differences in individual animals. Whatever breed.

And, IMO, any animal (beloved pet or not) who attacks like this should be put down immediately.

The truth behind dogsbite.org, if anyone even cares about the truth anymore:

http://btoellner.typepad.com/kcdogblog/2010/03/the-truth-behind-dogsbiteorg.html

I guess I'm more inclined to listen to...
The American Dog Owners Association, the American Kennel Club (AKC), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Working Dog Federation, the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, Best Friends Animal Society, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants, the International Association of Canine Professionals, the National Animal Control Association, the National Animal Interest Alliance, the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors, the National Canine Research Council, and the Center for Disease Control
...than I am one angry lady with a website and an agenda.

Do you know what kills more children every year than Pit Bulls? Five gallon buckets. Bring on the legislation! (cite: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/5006.html)

Tell that to the parents of all the dead children that have been killed by pits.

When people care more about a breed of dog than the safety of our children, that's tells a lot of truth.

As much as I love dogs it would be a cold day in hell before I'd ever own a pitbull or a pitbull mix.Even if it were raised by me as a puppy.I would never trust it.But that's just me.

When the owner of the dogbite site can list so many maulings and deaths, I put more stock in that than the AKC. The dogbite lady has actual evidence in the form of mutilated and dead people.

Everyone is free to own whatever dog they wish. For myself, a pit bull will never be a dog of choice. As someone pointed out earlier, they are more nervous, and God knows what could set them off - it's a chance I would never take for myself, my family, and my neighbors.

That is insulting. I don't think anyone here is putting any animal above children. We are just trying to curb the perpetuation of a myth.

31 deaths in 2011.

What myth?

I am going to start a new topic, since furthering this discussion will take this thread more off topic than it is now.

Thanks for the link...I couldn't watch it (hate to see anything hurt or killed) but can get the gist from your comment and am looking into different alternatives including that just from a practical view.

I contacted the local community sheriff's watch and got a response back almost right away. They want a picture if I can get one and are putting extra patrols in the neighborhood to try to track down where the dog lives. That 911 call was enough to really spur me into action to see this through this time. Thanks for all the advice!

:seeya: Good luck Reality, please keep us posted and stay safe.

I put my children's safety above all else, and that is why I own a dog that half the world is terrified of. I fear other people that may try to enter my home much more than I will ever fear my dog. He has proven himself to be trustworthy...humanity has proven the exact opposite.

You seriously are not going to compare a pit bull to a pomeranian. You NEVER hear of someone being drug off and mauled by a pomeranian, however, when you do hear of a dog attach it is usually by a Pit Bull. Nobody has said that other dogs don't bit, that's a given, they are dogs for God's sake. Just because your dog has not attacked you yet, does not mean that something could not set it off. I've read so many stories where the family NEVER EVER would have thought their dog would have done the attack yet their lies their baby , dead! The dog was so gentle , would not have hurt a fly. Whatever!
My adopted brothers birth mother was mauled and killed by two pit bulls last year and they were a neighbors PETS.
Sorry to hear about your brother's mother- that is awful.

On another note,I am not comparing- just saying- never say never.

Baby Girl Killed by Family Dog
A 6-week-old girl died Saturday night after she was mauled by the family's dog, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

An uncle baby-sitting the newborn left the child on a bed unattended while he went to the kitchen to prepare a bottle for her, Solis said. When he returned, he found the family's Pomeranian dog on the bed attacking the baby, Solis said
