's attorney Brian Steel is giving his opening statement
https://youtube.com/watch?v=_wsEQzIWaxQ
"Jeffery Williams was born into an environment, community, society that was filled with depression, despair, hopelessness and helplessness." -
#YoungThug attorney opening statement.
T**g's opening: Williams saw rap music as a way to get out of poverty. Williams' mother had 11 children.

and his younger sister share the same father. They are #10 and #11. None of the other 11 children share the same father.
Steel: Jeffrey Williams' stage name of
#YoungThug came from Tupac's song, P.Y.T. - Playa Young Thugs and the name stands for "truly humbled under God.”
Steel: In Jeffery's neighborhood, rap is a subset of hip hop, gangster rap is a subset of rap. Jeffery sought out how to accomplish his mission of being a successful rapper. They were poor but he had a phone with the internet. Jeffery would look up every accomplished rap artist and see what made them special.
Steel: Jeffery realized Lil Wayne dressed differently than other rappers, Lil Wayne wore tight fitting pants.
#YoungThug decided to dress that way. He would take his little sister's jeans and wear them. "He wore dresses." He realized in order to become successful, he had to be interesting, create a brand. (Photos from 2016 album "Jeffery”)
Steel: Jeffery had interest in women but he never considered himself a player. "Jeffery was shy.”
Steel: Most people think about "" as a criminal, but to Jeffery it had a different meaning. meant something very personal, it was his pact that if he could ever make it as an artist and help his family and himself out of this endless cycle of hopelessness, he would be Truly Humbled Under God (T.H.U.G.)
Steel: Jeffery has performed with Rihanna, Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Drake......He has been to fashion shows all over Europe. He has his own clothing line.
Steel says "YSL" comes from the tight fitting pants Jeffery was wearing, they had YSL on them standing for Yves Saint Laurent women's clothing brand.
Steel: Jeffery has never been convicted of a crime. He can carry a gun. He's not a convicted felon.
We've heard a lot about Kenneth Copeland in Schardt's opening yesterday and Steel's opening today. He's listed in court documents as "K.C". Prosecutors consider him a key witness that will testify. His police interrogation was leaked earlier this year. Prosecutors tried to protect his identity, but it's in front of the jury now.
Steel now talking about YFN Lucci's mom's house getting shot up....his mother was also shot. Prosecutors say this was done by
#YSL. YFN Lucci and others are also indicted in a different RICO case. They've been sitting in jail longer than YSL but state opted to try YSL first.
Steel showed this to the jury which is overt act 26 in the indictment. What the state says shows Williams as part of a criminal gang, Steel says this is how Williams feels about the "messed up" justice system.
Overt Act 96.
#YoungThug posts an image of YFN Lucci - Rayshawn Bennett, stating "yfn if ain like what u do for your mother and kids I WOULDVE BEEN KILLED U" - Steel downplays the post. Here's an article about this post/feud:
Steel: Lyrics from
#YoungThug song "I never killed anybody but I got something to with that body.." Steel says other artists have used those same phrases.
T**g's lyrics "I shot at his mommy, no he no longer mention me" prosecutors say this is when
#YSL shot up YFN Lucci's mom's house and she was hit. Steel says this lyric was 4 years after the shooting, "There's no connection."
Steel to the jury: It took 10 months to choose you to decide Jeffery's fate. Jeffery trusts you.
Lunch until 2:35 pm.
