I have seen posts referring to Mr. Brooks having recently been in jail or having past domestic violence arrests - is there an article stating this ? TIA
We have been told in other cases it is not relevant, however police would probable have had access to his record. Maybe ask a mod if it can be discussed? Alternatively check in MSM.

Post #398 has it all. (Last time I checked it was #398---that may have changed if posts have been deleted)

Again, do you really want to shoot somebody because of what they might do? Lets say he got away and did not turn and tazer the officer, take his gun from his retention holster and murder Both officers and then go on a rampage in Downtown. Does this happen all that often by suspects running full stride away from the police?
He had already assaulted the police before stealing the taser and using it. Thank God he didn't steal the gun or we would have two or more deaths now. Why did the GF even drop him off to retrieve his car?

I will compare the officers ONE reprimand to the criminal history of the Mr Brooks any day.

I just stumbled upon Rayshard's YouTube channel. This is his own channel, and he placed an interview that he did on May 16th, a month ago.Very interesting and might shed light on why he was fighting so hard to get away.

Apparently he was on probation for charges in Ohio in December,2019. Since he was still on probation, he said 'any bit of trouble and back to jail I go.'

The officer's attorney is going to love this.

The mayor, not so much.

Have we heard any comments from governor regarding this incident?

Some Atlanta cops were recently arrested and charged with aggravated assault for using tasers on some protesters. Here is the Georgia code for AA.

It appears in that case a taser is considered to be a deadly weapon.

Does that mean that Rayshard Brooks was also using a deadly weapon by firing the taser at police? If so would that mean the officers acted lawfully in using their firearms?

Yes this does mean a taser is considered a deadly weapon. In the Javier Ambler case it actually killed him.

It irritates me when I see people say the officers should have given him a ride home. Since when? I went to jail when I got a DUI. I was not disagreeable in anyway. I went quietly and did my time...like the vast majority of people. Here in my town, someone got shot for going after officers with a hammer. Nothing happened to the officers. I can't pass judgement on what someone does in the moment...you just never know how you are going to react when you feel your life could be in danger.
Maybe they should have just let him run away and nabbed him later, but hindsight is 20/20
What if he had used the taser on an innocent victim? They couldn't just let him run away. They had probably checked his record too in the 40 minutes.

Thanks I scrolled back and saw it and the video in his own words. It speaks for itself really doesn't it so I am not commenting further on his record.

Yah, I don't think his gf really dropped him off. Why wouldn't she just go through the drive thru to get her drunk bf some food?

Three weeks ago he said on his YouTube channel, that he was happily married with 3 kids. And his wife was on TV today.

But he was in a rental car, talking about a girlfriend dropping him off near his motel, so he can see his kids tomorrow....So that is confusing.

I don't think anyone dropped him off there. He just said that to pretend he wasn't driving drunk. JMO

In his YouTube video from a few weeks ago, he speaks about being on probation.

Rayshard Brooks

Rayshard Brooks was wanted for a probation violation for failure to notify the community supervision of his address change and failure to complete theft prevention class for the original offenses of False Imprisonment, Cruelty to Children, Family Violence, Battery and Simple Battery. He left Georgia and was found in Ohio. Per additional court documentation he was picked up on January 6, 2020, in Ohio by the Georgia police.

I think it is important to bring up for a few reasons.

One, people are posting about this officer's ONE written reprimand in 7 years on the job. As if that means he is a horrible officer.

Two, people and various articles keep harping on him being a father of four, and his 8 yr old's birthday party, as if that means he should have been given a break on the drunk driving....and I think those convictions paint a different picture than what he portrayed during his lie fest with the officers.

Three, being on probation means that his arrest would have sent him back to jail for quite awhile. And it may also explain why the cop didn't just pat him on the back and say I'll drive you home .

When you get probation it means that you aren't supposed to be out drinking, and making bad choices like drunk driving. There is no excuse for that. He keeps talking about his 4 kids, but what kind of choices was he making to be drunk driving while on active probation?

He said so himself on his YouTube channel," The moment I do anything out of hand, back in jail I go." :(

Cruelty to children? Yuck.

Which makes me wonder, if he was even allowed to be around children at all.

Not really sure who the "victim" is here.

Would the police have had access to that Ohio warrant info during the 40 minutes before it turned violent? Don't they take the D/L and check it out? Do out of state warrants show up?

Rayshard Brooks' killing 'is so personal to so many people of color,' Atlanta mayor says

"That could have been any one of us," Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said on NBC's "TODAY". "That could be any of our kids or brothers. In this case it was: It was someone's father."

Bottoms said that [the] officers' interaction with Brooks began as "almost a pleasant interaction. It didn't have to end this way. That's what's so frustrating. It leaves us asking so many questions. We do so many things in Atlanta we thought to get it right, and this went so terribly wrong."

Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields resigned from her position on Saturday night, less than 24 hours after the shooting, saying in a statement, "It is time for the city to move forward and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve."

Bottoms said today that she appreciated the former chief's work and dedication to the city, and that Shields, who remains on the police force, will have input on the department's "transformation." The Atlanta police department was already reviewing its policies, the mayor said, and the shooting of Brooks only intensifies the need for that.

L. Chris Stewart, an attorney for Brooks' family, said Brooks shouldn't have faced deadly force because he appeared to have a stun gun. "Of extreme concern in the murder of Rayshard Brooks is the fact that he was shot in the back multiple times while fleeing," Stewart and law partner Justin Miller said in a statement.

I am not sure if it showed up. It is an out of state warrant from Ohio, so I am not sure if it popped up in Georgia or not.

I think the criminal history does though.

Mr Stewart's above statement "because he appeared to have a stun gun" is fantasy IMO. Brooks did have a "stun gun". It was ripped off the police officers person, during the struggle by Mr Brooks. And, this "stun gun" ( Taser ) was also recently deemed a deadly weapon per the Mayor. Also, not mentioned in Mr Stewart's statement, was the fact that Mr Brooks fired the deadly weapon, aiming at the police.
An actual journalist and reporter would also be able to site these facts in this MSM report. But sadly, that doesn't happen too often anymore.

The mayor said:

“While there may be debate as to whether this was an appropriate use of deadly force, I firmly believe that there is a clear distinction between what you can do and what you should do,” Ms. Bottoms said. “I do not believe that this was a justified use of deadly force.”

Let’s not forget false imprisonments is a felony in Georgia. A felon possessing a taser in GA is also another felony.

Police search for (white) ‘instigators’ who started Wendy’s fire after Rayshard Brooks shooting

Channel 2 Action News obtained new video of a (white) woman who police say is responsible for starting a fire that torched a Wendy’s restaurant, just hours after a deadly police shooting there.

The Atlanta Police Foundation says a lot of tips have come in to CrimeStoppers Atlanta after they posted a $10,000 reward for her arrest.

A Channel 2 viewer recorded the video on Saturday night. It clearly shows a white woman in shorts with a pony tail spraying something into the flames at the restaurant. She smiles and nods and walks away from the restaurant as flames spread.

Video on Twitter, linked in story

Atlanta police shared a second video of the same woman on their Twitter account and still photos of a second woman dressed in black with an aerosol can.

Police search for (white) ‘instigators’ who started Wendy’s fire after Rayshard Brooks shooting

Dave Wilkinson is the president of the Atlanta Police Foundation and a former secret service agent. He says its clear police are searching for a small number of people who came with different intentions than the peaceful protests.

“We’re talking about individuals that are literally throwing Molotov cocktails, the folks that are setting businesses on fire. It appears that their intention for being there is to destroy property, wreak havoc and create violence,” Wilkinson said. “There’s no question when you see that video of the suspects they certainly look different, they certainly dress differently.”

Suddenly, many folks here are claiming a tazer is a deadly weapon? Does the manufacturer classify the taser as a deadly weapon? Can you cite any police force that classifies it as a deadly weapon? Has there ever been a case where a suspect grabbed an officers taser and tased him to death? I do not like tasers either by the way, and I think they should be outlawed.
To those of you claiming it is a deadly weapon do you think they should be outlawed? Also, do you think the officers were within the law to use a “ deadly taser” on Mr. Brooks for resisting arrest?
