I just don't think he hurt himself! His dog was left behind and from what I have read he would not do that .
I think someone came to his door and called him away from the home "for just a minute " hence no keys, wallet, cellphone...
He may have not needed keys to re enter the home if he had a garage door code.
Someone locked the door and I believe it was him because of the dog.

IMO he was called from the home and there is a crime scene somewhere- close enough that he didn't feel the need to take anything with him.

Lover's triangle?
Perhaps, but if he lived alone I would think a lover would come to him.

<modsnip>

There is something guilty there...

I read, too that he GOT the promotion - big error either in the media I was reading or my misinterpretation. However, now we know he did not get a much expected promotion. And had social, family, and career pressures to keep climbing and be 100% and on point at all times. I was in that position and ended up leaving the job when same happened. Took me a very long time - months - to get back on track and get my head straight... And I was far from the accomplished man that Tim is. The pressure one lives under and puts on themselves can be crushing. Hoping he stepped away from life for time to refresh his soul, and nothing more.

If Timothy felt he deserved the promotion, could he appeal the decision? Did Timothy belong to a union?

 • #324
I wonder where the confusion came from re his promotion. Is it possible he told his family he did get it?
I don’t see anything sinister re the neighbour, I can’t see her mentioning what Timothy said, if they were hiding something.
I think he will be found in the woods nearby, if they are big enough to conceal someone despite a superficial search.

At this time, is LE still searching for Tim ? I'm sure his passport was located, right ?

My apologies if this was said already. Could he have been struggling with a personal relationship too, maybe sharing alternative ideas of relationships.? Maybe, he was thinking about telling his family and then this promotion thing comes up. Not getting the promotion could be related to personal relationships at work, possible complaints, anything. A high achiever would take this to heart.

Also, I would like to say first this is no ill will towards his family. But was he intellectually different than they are? I am a doctor from a working class family. There are many times, that is not their fault, that I feel different or misunderstood. It can be lonely and very depressing. I hide it as he might too. This could have been enflamed by the lack of the promotion. I have been there.

My thinking is self-harm.

Sorry if this was already covered. Just catching up!

We're not allowed to sleuth the family of course, but in this article it states that Timothy's father is a retired Air Force Colonel.

That's pretty high up the ladder! In my opinion, that implies quite an accomplishment intellectually as well as professionally. I would bet his father impressed his own values and work ethic upon Timothy as well. In fact, I would say his father's encouragement was likely a key factor in Timothy's achievements.

You may be correct though that Timothy felt different. We don't know any of the family's dynamics, and they may have held other values that Timothy did not necessarily embrace.

( By the way, congrats on your own accomplishments! Lots of hard work and perseverance there. Your family must be very proud... )

This article says he was promoted last July. So maybe there were two promotions? The one he got last July, and the one he didn’t more recently. (speculation)

http://www.newsweek.com/cdc-timothy-cunningham-missing-821392

“Cunningham in July was also promoted to commander in the United States Public Health Service, family members told The New York Times.”

Still no Timothy? Hoping and praying he is found soon.

 • #329
Was someone else given the position instead? And when the supervisor told Tim the reason why he didn't get the promotion, did he compare Tim to this other person, making him feel like he failed? This must have been a pivotal moment for Tim. Soon afterwards he left.

IMO if there was any chance of helping Tim - if he was laying injured somewhere, due to accident or self harm, it's too late to find him and save him now IMO, so I do hope he is laying low somewhere. Hope never hurts but logically, him laying injured somewhere is not what's happened here. But if it had, the coverage and concern came too late IMO.

Yes I’m sure they said at press conference, they had found his passport.

Oh, I didn't realize he didn't get the promotion. I thought the early articles said he did. Must have been incorrect information reported. That really does put some context to his possibly seeming "angry".

I thought he did also, now finding out he didn't get the promotion. That explains anger, could also be hurt .

Geez, with the new information it looks to me like the handwriting is on the wall. The disappointment regarding the promotion, taking time off from work immediately following that, leaving work abruptly, the “delete my number from your phone” comment to the neighbor, then his disappearance.....i’m afraid he’s no longer with us. So sad.

He works for the government, no Union!

USPHS is one of the seven uniformed services. They have the same rank structure as the Navy and NOAA (another uniformed service) and all wear almost identical uniforms. They have the same payscale as the military, the same benefits, and similar bonuses. The PHS is made up of officers only, there are no enlisted.

But his keys were found inside his locked house. So if he was just popping over to the neighbor's for a quick visit, he would have locked himself out. That makes zero sense. I suppose a garage code door code is possible but it would seriously be quicker just to take his own keys. He was also environmentally conscious and that would be a waste of electricity. I know leaving the dog was out of character but someone having a mental health crisis is not thinking clearly.

After the press conference today I think he killed himself and police just haven't found his body yet. I hate it and it's tragic but Occum's Razor does apply here.

I'm reading backwards so maybe late in posting this but from my understanding he was promoted to "Commander" in July 2017, but he was seeking another (current) promotion. I'm still digging around for details regarding the newer (replacing supervisor?) promotion that he didn't get.

"The employee, Timothy J. Cunningham, 35, was promoted to commander in the United States Public Health Service in July, his family said. According to the police, he was last seen on Feb. 12"

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/24/us/cdc-employee-missing.html?mtrref=www.google.com

And, a CDC page lists this:

"Dr. Cunningham joined CDC in 2010 as part of its Epidemic Intelligence Service and worked in the Division of Reproductive Health. Currently, as the Team Lead for the State Chronic Disease Epidemiology Assignee Program... "

Appointment Term: 2017–2020

ETA: I just caught up and see that Gussified posted similar info previously... oops! Sorry!
