Texana: Well at least we have him on the record in that statement saying he was the last to see her alive. That's something from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
We only have Gerry's word that Maddie was still there at 9 p.m., or that he really looked in on them. It is unclear whether anyone else ever actually looked into her room to make sure she was ok.
Matthew Oldfield first said he didn't go in, then changed and said he did, but noticed the shutters open:

Gerry later said that he had noticed a door ajar, and thought the abductor might have been lurking there already at 9 p.m.
