“During the first 20 minutes, the pilots talk normally,” he said, saying they spoke in a “cheerful” and “courteous” way. “There is nothing abnormal happening,” he said.

The prosecutor said the transcript showed that the captain was preparing a briefing for landing in Düsseldorf. The co-pilot’s answer, the prosecutor said, was “laconic.”

The commanding pilot then asked the co-pilot to take over, and the noise of a seat backing up and a door closing could be heard.

“At this stage, the co-pilot is in control, alone,” the prosecutor said. “It is when he is alone that the co-pilot manipulates the flight monitoring system to activate the decent of the plane.” The prosecutor said that this action could only have been “voluntary.”

“You can hear the commanding pilot ask for access to the cockpit several times,” the prosecutor said. “He identifies himself, but the co-pilot does not provide any answer.”

“You can hear human breathing in the cockpit up until the moment of impact,” the prosecutor said. “The pilot was therefore alive.”

This is just awful. How selfish, to take all those innocent people and children (babies!) with him. My heart breaks for these poor people. So senseless. RIP. :crying:

I remember reading a few years ago that more suicides than you might expect are spontaneous ie no prior planning.

I don't understand how anyone can consider this a "suicide". It is NOT just a suicide, he intentionally killed 150 people and ignored the yelling of his co-pilot.

Pilots are supposed to be vetted to assure they are not lunatics and that they are not flying while drunk/high.

There has to be more to this story.

Summary of prosecutor's press conference

Here are the main points of the press conference held by the Marseille public prosecutor, Brice Robin.

⁍ The co-pilot of the Germanwings jet that crashed in the French Alps deliberately forced the plane into the descent that led to the disaster, the prosecutor said. He pressed a button that accelerated the Airbus A320’s descent when alone in the cockpit. “It was a voluntary action,” Robin said.

⁍ The co-pilot - named by the prosecutor as Andreas Lubitz, 28, a German citizen, was alone because the pilot had gone to the toilet. When he returned, the co-pilot refused to open the door. “The intention was to destroy this plane,” he said.

⁍ Lubitz was breathing normally at the point of impact, the prosecutor reveals. He said nothing during the final descent, which lasted about 10 minutes. “Absolute silence inside the cockpit. Nothing, no word during the last 10 minutes.”

⁍ There was no indication that Lubitz’s actions amounted to terrorism, Robin said. But he stopped short of declaring it suicide, saying only that was a “legitimate” question to ask.

⁍ Cries could be heard just before the impact, the prosecutor said. “The death would have been sudden, immediate.”

⁍ Air traffic controllers attempted to contract the plane in the last few minutes before the crash but received no reply from the cockpit.

Robin said he had briefed the families of the dead.

Peter Ruecker, a member of the LSC Westerwald flying club in Montabaur in western Germany, said Lubitz joined the club as a teenager, aged 14 or 15. He trained as a glider pilot with the club, obtaining his glider’s pilot licence there.

Lubitz joined Lufthansa after completing his high school certificate and trained as airline pilot, Mr Ruecker said, adding Lubitz was from Montabaur, unmarried and had no children.

Where he lived

I am trying to find out. I think media (surprise!) has this wrong. I think the policy here when flight crew leaves cockpit a cabin crew memeber blocks door with cart. I mean putting a flight attnedent in a pilots seat on todays complicated aircraft seems somewhat useless IMO what could they do?

In the German town of Montabaur, acquaintances said he was in his late 20s and showed no signs of depression when they saw him last autumn.

"He was happy he had the job with Germanwings and he was doing well," said a member of a glider club, Peter Ruecker, who watched him learn to fly. "He gave off a good feeling."

Lubitz had obtained his glider pilot's license as a teenager and was accepted as a Lufthansa pilot trainee after finishing a tough German college preparatory school, Mr Ruecker said.

He described Lubitz as a "rather quiet" but friendly young man.

Maybe it was his intention that the passengers wouldn't find out by his somewhat slow descend. But of course they would at the end, and with the captain banging on the door. I am sure had the captain managed to crack the door, the co-pilot would have just put the stick forward. Then why keep flying like that? I just don't get it. Incredibly cruel and selfish act by a mentally ill man IMO.

Yes I agree completely with your post. However other incidents like this have been referred to as 'pilot suicide' which is the sense in which I spoke of 'suicide'. Who knows what was happening in his mind? We don't.

Can you imagine being a passenger on board and watching from your seat the captain banging on the door???? Must have been awful!!!!!!

The problem is what can be done to prevent this from happening again not a lot. You put your life in the hands of these pilots. How can it be determined that pilots are suicidal before they act on their thoughts? We never really know what thoughts are in the heads of people. It would be better if there was a fault with the plane at least something could be done about that.

JMO-I think what is being alleged is a horrific mass murder. I agree we don't know what was in his mind, but it appears it was nefarious.

Got a tell you this is my worst flying fear. A suicidal pilot that wants to take the plane down.
I know it is not rational or likely but there it is my flying issue in the news.
Prayers for the loved ones of the murdered.

We fly across the Atlantic every 2-3 months and the 9 hour flight is difficult for a OCD phobia worrywort,I do everything to keep myself calm.I will need serious meds this time.
I bet everyone flying today is eyeing the pilots.I feel for all the plots and crew flying this week.
