And isn’t it likely the case, that if deemed ‘accidental/no foul play’, it is unlikely to be further investigated? And then as we see on many other cases, evidence disappears, witnesses age, and it goes quiet or ‘cold’, etc….

It is probably up in these threads, but has the Shannan Gilbert case been ‘officially’ closed? Or is that known?

At best from what has been disclosed publicly, seems a coroner would only be able to conclude not determined or undetermined as to cause of death. And I thought that meant a case could not be officially closed? I could well be wrong.

As my ex used to say about some other things, perhaps some ‘pencil whipping’ could be at play?

For many years the SCPD would not release the 911 tape, stating the case was open, and continuing investigation was underway, and release of the 911 tape would harm the investigation.

The SCPD has been trying to have it both ways, the case is open and active, the case is not being investigated as it was an accident.

The case needs a fresh start. IMO

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison is resigning after a two-year stint as Suffolk’s top cop, a tenure that included the arrest of a suspect in the long-unsolved Gilgo Beach killings.Harrison, in a department email message, said he would tender his resignation to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone Friday.A spokesperson for Bellone confirmed the veracity of the email…

It’s unclear when Harrison's last day on the job will be. Harrison did not immediately respond to a call and message to his cellphone Thursday night.

“Serving as the Suffolk County Police commissioner for the last two years was not only a privilege but one of the greatest highlights of my law enforcement career and that is because of you,” Harrison wrote in the department message. “I thank County Executive Bellone for this opportunity as it has been an honor serving the people of Suffolk County.”

I hope the cases aren't pushed aside.

My gut reaction is that this is another blow to the case.

Harrison is resigning. Hot diggity dang... this isn't shocking at all. The writing was on the wall though, Romaine (R) was going to fire him when elected. I would have put money down on that.

SCPD and Heuermann are breathing sighs of relief tonight.

Yes, Harrison is a man of dignity and he went out while he was in control of the situation. I feel as though Suffolk County is returning to the darkness.

Yes, by some. Corruption runs deep in Suffolk County, NY. Let’s hope they don’t go so far as to let Heuermann walk. That would be terrifying, yet not surprising.

I would think the entire country would be shocked if they (the prosecution?) didn't continue with his prosecution. Do you have an example of persons charged with murder with substantial evidence that were then allowed to "walk" in this court's jurisdiction? Or of any other crime where a suspect is charged with a crime was allowed to walk there?

Not unexpected and certainly not unusual when a new County Executive takes office, in many counties all over this country, the new County Executive appoints their choice to offices.
My gut reaction is that this is another blow to the case.
The case is in the hands of the prosecution and the homicide detectives/LE will be assisting when it goes to trial, presenting the evidence, etc. How do you think it is a "blow" to the case when you don't know who the new commissioner will be?
Yes, by some. Corruption runs deep in Suffolk County, NY.
What does this resignation and a new commissioner eventually being appointed have to do with corruption?

From the article;
"Steve Bellone, the incumbent County Executive, is not running due to term limits. This influenced Harrison’s decision, as he wants to allow the new County Executive the freedom to start fresh with a new commissioner."

Harrison addressed the different perspectives on the podcast with Joe Giaclone. Harrison considers it simply a difference of opinion, common with work colleagues.
10/24/2023 I really like Harrison's way of giving credit to everyone else. And that's everytime I've heard him speak. Not everyone is that generous with the credit.
I just watched the video w Harrison. My only question is he mentions all the groups part of his task force. I wonder why Nassau Police are never mentioned as part of the Task force?
Peaches torso was found in Hempstead lake State Patk. Asian Male and Karen Vergata’s skull were found in Jones Beach/Tobey Beach and RH lives in Massapequa Park, all of are Nassau County.

Nothing would surprise me in that county. It’s LE and criminal justice system are deeply flawed. Just look at the circle of people in both prosecution and defense for this case. Look at Burke and his history of corruption and cover ups. They’re all tied together, some having been involved in serious criminal activity, including drug use. Perhaps its more obvious to outsiders.

On the positive side, younger voters aren't going to tolerate this level of corruption. Things will change eventually.

We don't know his reasoning.

Maybe you're right but I doubt it. Where do you go up from commissioner of a huge police department that happens to be making fast progress, credited mostly to you, on a high profile case?

I can't envision the promotion.

That was frankly on my mind when Tierney jumped on front of a microphone in front of the accused murderers home LOCATED IN NASSAU, and proceeded to thank every agency with a mayoral smile except Nassau or local police. That media control, crowd control and traffic control all fell on Nassau departments, body parts found in Nassau not withstanding. It was weird.

I suppose the turf wars never really go away. This same department fought tooth and nail to prevent NY state police and FBI from looking over their shoulders. Maybe its a male, macho, law enforcement thing. JMO

There may still be a lot of things covered up, probably in all the jurisdictions out there.
It kind of reminds me of Jeffrey Epstein and the mysterious way his case was handled. JMO

Regardless, the cat is out of the bag, so to speak. The PTB can backpedal and spin, but some of the sordid details are now known to the public.
