I learned something new to me this week

That you can buy canned Pink Lady apples and canned Granny Smith apples

I always knew you could buy canned sliced apples but I'd never noticed that the actual apple variety was listed.

You might have guessed I love apples, some more than others and some not so much.

Yes I'm wary of it.

I think it's on this laptop too because I see the icon but it's not activated and iit seems to me maybe on the new ones you don't have a choice. I might be wrong.
You can turn it off (disable it) but Windows update added/adds it whether you want it or not. And it takes up a lot of space, so can cause issues if your c drive is full. In addition, you can turn it off, and then an update you don't want comes along and it turns itself back on. So you have to be diligent. There is a way to uninstall it using Powershell, but again,, you'd need to check and run it after every update. But hey, I am paranoid and cover my camera and microphone unless I am actively using them.

Mine doesn't seem to have activated.

I have my camera covered ever since I first got this laptop, also previous ones.
Never thought about the microphone but with both the camera and microphone I have never activated them.

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY THREAD DECEMBER 7TH 2025
Hey Everyone,
Thanks to all the Guardians who came to our 8 hour Zoom call. It was a blast.
it is 1:50 A.M. so forgive me..i used A.I. to pull some facts together. Also i will get caught up on the thread later this afternoon. Now, let me introduce to you Chat Gtpxyz or whatever it's called. Version 5.
Trigger warning. Horror stories from Pearl Harbor

December 7, 1941 — A Day the World Changed

On this day in 1941, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor shattered a quiet Sunday morning in Hawaii and changed the course of history forever. In less than two hours, over 2,400 Americans were killed, nearly 1,200 were wounded, and the U.S. was forced into World War II.

The horror was unimaginable.

Young sailors were trapped inside sinking ships, pounding on steel walls as water rushed in. Some survived only because shipmates used torches to cut through burning metal to pull them out. Others were burned alive by exploding fuel, or drowned in oil-covered water while trying to escape. Nurses worked for days without rest, treating the wounded as the floors filled with blood. Many who survived carried those memories for the rest of their lives.

So few eyewitnesses remain now. That is exactly why we must never forget what they endured.

And Now… A Little Light After the Darkness

After reading about a day filled with such tragedy, it helps to remember that human joy still exists on this date too:

  • On December 7, 1949, the first-ever computer error (a real “computer bug”) was discovered, when an actual moth was found inside a machine at Harvard — proving that even technology has bad days.
Ok it's really me again. Is your retirement plan a weekly Powerball ticket? That's my plan. I am going to win any day now..I can feel it. Some people call me delusional. I say I am a sunny ball of optimism. Back later.

Oh and each of the four apples came wrapped up separately in their own little bag.
When I first moved to the UK from the US, I was delighted to find I could do all my grocery shopping online. However, my metric conversion is terrible. I ordered a roasting chicken, sold by weight, and I ended up with a tiny chicken that was the size of a plump parakeet, maybe.

It's a good thing I'm a glass half full kind of person

My dearly missed SO used to call me Pollyanna because I was always finding something good out of every situation.

It went like this.
He would say isn't it awful about whatever and my mind and voice would say.

The bad thing is, but the good thing is....

:)
I too try to find the good thing out of bad situations. There won't sound like a silver lining to this story, but there is, I promise. :)

Once my step-mother called, upset that her brother had been found murdered. Beaten beyond recognition and stuffed in a closet in the basement. She couldn't stop crying because this was shortly after their mother had passed. Two in such a short time, and the manner of his death was just too much for her. She was broken.

I said... Dianne, no mother wants to outlive their children, it's just not supposed to happen that way. So the fact that she passed a few weeks before he did is a BLESSING. There is NO way she should have known the details of her son's death. It would be beyond soul-crushing. So, I'm really sorry that they passed away so close together, but I'm glad she passed first.

All the sobbing and wailing stopped. It clicked with her. The silver lining, even to a horrible death and losing 2 close family members. She thanked me for that and I felt glad that I could help lift the pain she had been going through up until our phone call.

I wouldn't demonize Co-pilot/AI.

Copilot is a great workhorse :D
It can analyze complex data in Excel
and generate PowerPoint presentations from text documents and spreadsheets.

Those who need to prepare such presentations in their jobs,
know what I'm talking about 😁
These are my tasks as a teacher.

Copilot also works with Outlook and Teams.

Copilot's AI assistant is useful in almost every area of life.
It can manage your calendar,
help you manage tasks,
and set specific goals
—both professional and personal.

It can answer almost any question based on available data.

One shouldn't turn one's back on Progress
(especially in Technology).

It is a LOST battle IMO!!!

World is constantly changing.
Those who stop,
will be left faaaar behind.

JMO :)

I don't have a problem with the GOOD aspects of AI. It's the bad that will come out of it. Even the godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton, is worried about the threat of it. It's inevitable and quite frankly, I don't want to be around for it when things get really bad.

Always look at the bright side 😜

Technology Progress cannot be stopped.

It reminds me
of what my Great-Grannie told me once:
When electricity was being introduced into their village (just after WW2)
some warned that
"Cows 🐄 would stop producing milk"!!!

🤣 😆 Hahahahaha 😂

Laptop problems.
Freezing cursor.
My muscles are actual hurting from trying to get my computer to respond.

I had thought of getting a new one, long before this one started having problems a few days ago.
I always like to have a spare laptop just in case.

The one I wanted to buy has suddenly gone instore only so I might have to go and have a look inside an actual store lol.

I think it's being discontinued and all the new ones are hundreds of dollars more.

All the new ones seem to have this Co pilot which I'm wary of.
I want to be the ONLY pilot using my laptop.
I think you can disable it; I’ll look.

Hope this helps!

Mine is not new.
One day recently I noticed it there. All the time.
I will talk to tech dept. to see if it can go on permanent journey far away.
You might need your IT people to disable it if it’s a work computer.

Crowned Top TV Sleuth

"Murder She Wrote sleuth Jessica Fletcher
can officially be crowned TV's top detective
– ahead of all-time greats like Sherlock Holmes and Colombo
and modern-day crime-solvers like DCI Luther.

New research from Freeview channel Great Mystery
has identified the top 30 TV detectives of all time
by calculating how many on-screen murders they solved.

Spanning more than 70 years of television,
researchers clawed through episodes of murder mystery programming
from Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot
to Inspector Morse and Jonathan Creek."

Yum! Nothing like an apple fresh off the tree! I'm a Golden Delicious and Jonagold fan myself, but survive on Pink Ladies the rest of the year.

It can answer almost any question based on available data.

But is that answer correct? Sometimes the answer is no, from a programming perspective. It may be close, but not correct, or it may be very far off.

Use the tech if you like it, but don't assume it's always right. 😀. Use it judiciously.

And again, I work with computers, Co-pilot is gobbling up YOUR information, right off your computer, with every keystroke and takes up a lot of space. If you ( the generic you) don't mind, it's cool, but there should be an easy way to jettison it for those who don't want it ON our computer. At least there is still Linux. 😀

Re Golden Delicious apples

They are an excellent choice for lovers of sweeter baked goods.

Me!!!! 😁

These apples have an exceptionally sweet flavor and a soft, juicy texture,
making them ideal for apple pie.

Their natural sweetness means you don't need to add too much sugar,
allowing the apples to fully express their flavor.

Golden Delicious apples soften even more during baking,
giving the filling a smooth, velvety texture :)

Thanks to their delicate sweetness,
Golden Delicious apples pair beautifully with cinnamon,
enriching the flavor of apple pie.

Mmmm... Soooo Yummy.... 😋

I use it on my work laptop and have never regretted it so far.
It helps me enormously in my job.
I only use it at school.

As a teacher I need to stay up to date with Technology.
There are many advantages for Education.
We need to make the most of them.
There are so many resources for both teachers and students.

The School Staff gets constant trainings Technology wise.
It is "Lifelong Education" for us 😁

And even still
many of my students are better than me at ICT.

I swear they have this knowledge in their little fingers.

Generation Gap I guess :)

Anyway,
quantum computers are the Future.
Mind you,
they are already considered revolutionary.

To add to my post above...

So much has changed during the last 80/90 years.
Electricity was a wonder.
Radio was a luxury.
Later, black and white TVs appeared in some households and the whole neighbourhood gathered to watch programmes with open mouths.
Computers were as big as rooms.
Then,
landline phones appeared and were treated as luxury.
First cellphones were as big as bricks and only the richest could afford them.
If a person wanted to call a relative abroad, they had to go to the post office and wait for the connection.

And now?
We can communicate with anybody across the world by a tap on a touchscreen.

And all this progress happened during a lifetime of a person who is now over 80.

ONE lifetime.

What will the future bring?
We cannot even imagine I guess.

With quantum computers and AI
anything can happen.

And nobody can stop the Technological Progress.

JMO :)
