On This Day - 1st May

May Day - originally a Roman festival which began on 28th April and lasted several days to mark the commencement of summer. In England, middle and lower classes would gather flowers - ‘go a maying’ - and the prettiest village maid was crowned Queen of the May, celebrated with dancing around the maypole.

Josiah Wedgwood founded the Wedgwood pottery company in Burslem, Staffordshire. Wedgewood was a prominent abolitionist of slavery. He mass produced cameos depicting the seal for the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade and had them widely distributed. He was also the grandfather of Charles Darwin and Emma Darwin.

Queen Victoria opened the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London. Over 10,000 exhibitors set up eight miles of tables. Although technological wonders from around the world were on display, the exposition was dominated by Britain, which was the premier industrialized nation and workshop of the world.

GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY THREAD SUNDAY MAY 3RD 2026
it's May 3rd already. My Chat GPT aka Chatty really did not come through when I asked for a list of things that happened on this day in history. Here is the list.
1494
– Christopher Columbus's second voyage reaches Jamaica, becoming the first recorded European landing on the island.

1802 – Washington, D.C. incorporation: The city of Washington is officially incorporated.

1937 – Gone with the Wind Pulitzer Prize: Margaret Mitchell wins the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Gone with the Wind.

1947 – Japan postwar constitution goes into effect, establishing a democratic government and renouncing war.

1960 – Anne Frank House opening opens to the public in Amsterdam.

1968 – Paris student protests erupt at the Sorbonne, helping spark nationwide protests and strikes across France.

1979 – Margaret Thatcher becomes Prime Minister: Margaret Thatcher becomes the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

1999 – Oklahoma City tornado outbreak: One of the most powerful tornadoes ever recorded devastates parts of Oklahoma.

2007 – Madeleine McCann disappearance: Three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappears in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

2013 – Jodi Arias conviction: Jodi Arias is convicted of first-degree murder in Arizona.

Well, dang, nothing happened since 2013 and it was pretty boring in-between too. LOL

I make my own from scratch. :) And I'm a lot like James Bond in that I like my drinks "shaken, not stirred" (or frozen for that matter. lol) I was making raspberry margs from berries I bought last summer at the Farmer's Market and froze for the winter. SOOOO good. I wish I had bought more raspberries but they were all gone for the season my last trip to the Farmer's Market. I was like NOOOOOO!!! I need more! lol So I've been doing without for a while now. I should go tear my freezer apart to see if I can find a baggie of them hidden somewhere. I could have sworn I had more.

Oh! I'm so glad we're having this convo! I bought the first of the strawberries a few days ago and needed to hurry and do something with them. I was just looking up shortcake recipes but I think I'll save myself some time and hassle and make strawberry margs with them instead! Woo woot!

Thanks, @GatorsNorth, for making me think of that!!

Have one (or two) for me!

Have one (or two) for me!
Oh, my limit is one, NEVER 2. Ever! Here's why:
  • 4-5 raspberries, muddled
  • 1 mandarin orange, juiced (the small oranges. Not a lot of juice due to their small size)
  • juice of 1/2 lime
  • 1 shot Cointreau
  • 2 shots Tequila gold
  • Ice
Put all in a shaker and shake it up! Due to so little ingredients they don't even fill a glass and that's with a lot of ice, so, as you can see.... I only allow myself 1 because there are 3 shots in them. I'm not going to have 6 shots in one evening, no matter how badly I'd like 2 margs. LOL

I had to look up Aperol as I've never heard of it. I wonder if I can get one at a liquor store in a mini. That way I can try it without buying a bottle of it.

I just looked them up in my state's catalog to see where to purchase. Looks like they also make it in Spriter form as well. That way my opened prosecco wouldn't go flat over multiple days. I only have 1 drink a night so would take me a while to get through a bottle.

They apparently don't make them in mini's (50ML), or at least they don't sell them within 60 sq miles. Smallest bottle is 375ML which is a lot to just sample the product first without going all in. :(

I miss Fruit Tingles.

A fruit tingle is a sherbet sweet.

There's a cocktail that tastes just like it IF it is measured and made correctly.

Blue Curacao. Vodka. Ideally, grenadine (NOT raspberry cordial). A clear lemonade like Sprite.

It should be a true, clear purple once you mix it up. If it's blue, there's too much Curacao and it will taste too liquoricey.
