To me, her account is a weave of what happened and her Ninja fabrication. I imagine that Travis was screaming and it's quite possible that after the first shot or stab, he didn't immediately realize that she had attacked him. Shock can do that: I've read about that happening to experienced NYPD cop.
She's so excited telling the story because she senses that her "escape" from the Ninjas might be a key out of jail.
