Greece Greece - Ben Needham, 21 mos, Isle of Kos, 24 July 1991

Can you elaborate on this please, TTWO? I haven't read Kerry's book, which parts would be wrong IF Dino did it?

No problem CMC. Here are a couple of extracts that show Dino and any others working at the other building site that day had left according those at the farmhouse:

Another where Christine says she doesn't see a person, vehicle or animal when initially looking for Ben:

With the dusty, barren road stretching emptily out before her, Mum started jogging, scanning the ditches either side, even though she knew he wouldn’t be in them. Ben was too timid to have tackled their intimidating wild weeds – certainly not without making a noisy fuss. As she reached the sharp bend in the lane, Mum eased her speed. She’d already covered more ground than she imagined Ben could have travelled in such a short space of time. The second she turned the corner she was confident her grandson would be in sight. He wasn’t. Mum stared again at the sheer unbroken nothingness of the unmade lane. There wasn’t an animal, a vehicle or a person to be seen. And definitely no sign of a little boy. Ben was only twenty-one months. It was inconceivable he could have made it that far, let alone gone any further. And if he had, he would have answered her shouts. She trudged back round to the house and waited for the others to return. They all shook their heads. How could a toddler just disappear? There was only one other explanation. Stephen must have taken him. I can hear my dad’s voice now: ‘The stupid little idiot. Fancy not telling us he was taking Ben for a ride.

Thank you! Hmmmm that IS strange. The police must have been given very specific, credible and believable info for them to have done these searches.... I do wonder if it was longer than the grandparents thought before they noticed he was "quiet".

It can't be ruled out I admit. I wouldn't call putting all the blame on a now dead man justice for Ben if it was the case.

I would rather believe there is more to these digs than currently meets the eye. That is why I'm so interested in what SYP have to say when this trip to Kos comes to an end.

Gotcha.

What could the 'low interest' items (was that the term they used?) be that they found? Certainly no teeth or bones, they would be 'high interest'. Hair? Strips of cloth? Pieces of plastic possibly from his diaper? What exactly was he wearing (apart from the sandals)? Was he carrying anything? And further, stained stones or wood which might be from blood? Would that last 25 years though?

My heart sank when I read that they found nothing that excited them. :(

Re the clothes Ben was wearing

Ben was wearing a white shirt with a "bluey green pattern." when he went missing.

A small piece of light coloured fabric was found yesterday and has been taken away for analysis.

The finger tip search is looking for buttons of the shirt Ben was wearing at the time.

They are also looking for buckle of brown sandals he was wearing.

Note, this is from a September news report so I do think that piece of fabric has not proved to be significant, or we would have heard something by now

ETA I think he may have been carrying the two toy cars, as these have never been found

I also think the timing could have been longer than 2 - 3 minutes. I am quite sure Christine thought it was only that length of time, but it could easily have been longer.

If, as Kerry's book says, everything was quiet and Dino had stopped work for the day, then that raises doubt as to how he could have accidentally killed Ben.

I think it's very possible that Ben tried to follow Stephen down the road. We have the evidence from Stephen saying that Ben wanted a ride on the bike.
So Ben may have started to run down the road, after Stephen departed, trying to find him.
Which brings us back to abduction - as Christine's evidence says there was no one around when she went down the lane.

The problem is that once you start questioning things like that you commit to questioning everything. That is a deep and dark hole.

I see the Daily Mail have started to question this latest operation: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3838650/They-never-Greek-detectives-searched-Ben-Needham-1991-say-latest-1m-search-FLAWED-searched-dig-site-TWICE.html

If this map of movements is what SYP are basing these digs on (it is the Mail so will take with a grain of salt) then it is really flawed as I have always understood things:

There is a planned media briefing on Monday on Kos - and then at some point soon(ish) in the UK. I think we'll learn more on that point then

Search for Ben Needham in Kos could end tomorrow

The search for Ben Needham on the Greek island of Kos that has lasted more than 3 weeks, could end tomorrow.

Work collecting evidence at the farmhouse where Ben was last seen has now officially come to an end but the team from Operation Ben is still sifting through tonnes of soil from a dumping ground nearby which saw more activity today.

Interesting article Truth. I agree it's The Fail, so large dose of salt required, but I did not realise the Greek police had been quite so thorough, back in 1991. I wonder, did they also search Site 2 ?

bbm - I hear people say "2-3 minutes" all the time when in fact they mean anything from a couple of minutes to 10 or 15 or even 20 minutes. Often people are not aware how fast time goes by when you are busy reading something or talking with someone, or having fun ... all kinds of reasons. Happens to me all time that I *think* I spent "2-3 minutes' reading something but when I look at the clock it was actually 15 minutes.

Btw, Alyce, thanks for all the updates and your thoughtful and intelligent analyses!

Wonder what the presser is gonna tell us today. I don't expect any really new revelations actually.

Oh Kerry. :(

She has basically existed on hope for all these years, and now she has had her hope taken away without even getting her son's body back.

I haven't posted for a few days as just don't know what to say. I am gutted they haven't found him and interviews suggest Kerry really thought they would, I just can't begin to imagine how she is feeling right now. I'd really like to hear why Dino's mate was so sure there was an accident that day and wonder whether the police have searched other areas such as Dino's home/garden.

I feel angry and sad all at the same time. There was never gonna be a brilliant outcome to all this work, but this is the worst. Just devastating.
