The monthly food distribution along the bay front this morning included the mobile Covid truck. They were set up in the shade with fans to keep them cool. However, in the 30 minutes I was there, I didn't see one person in line to get a vaccine. They are there for 2 hours so maybe after I left they had some patients. If you need food or a vaccine, they are finished for today but keep a watch for next month.

Food distribution set for Saturday at the Van Wezel

Today they gave me a box of produce with turnips. I am not a huge fan but I've had turnip greens before. No greens, just turnips. An elderly aunt in GA used to make them for us at family gatherings. There are big avocados, 3 ears of corn, 2 bags of potatoes, onions, asparagus, apples, bananas and a different type cabbage. I'll be perusing recipes while I'm resting today.

There are 2 loaves of bread, English muffins and a pound cake too. I will have to freeze some of both. A box of dry goods with pasta, canned veggies, tomato sauce, etc. All helpful ingredients for sure. The big bag of meat had 2 pkgs of ground beef, a huge 7 lb hen that I'm defrosting. I will put it on my rotisserie. Then de-bone it for meals. Yum! A 5lb box of Stouffer's frozen macaroni and cheese. I'll have to bake it and then divide it up into freezer containers. Two prepared meals, one is big cheese stuffed meatballs which will be good for the pasta. The other is chicken stuffed peppers but I am not a fan of peppers. My daughter's boyfriend might like them. They also gave me a huge long thing of white American cheese slices, a gallon of milk and a gallon of orange juice. How did they know I am broke this week? This fresh food is such a blessing. Bless those that share!

That is a nice haul, PN :) I'm sure you'll have a busy weekend doing food prep. My dad always had turnips in our garden. Mom peeled them, cut up like potatoes, and cooked turnips until tender. Mashed with butter, salt, and pepper. I haven't cooked turnips in a very long time but will remember to do so in the fall.

I was at Wal-Mart today, literally, a full aisle of disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer for...wait for it....50

Yes. Fifty cents!

I have stocked up, not overboard, but we have plenty now for the car, every room of the house.

Had sticker shock at both Aldi and Walmart today. Every single thing I usually buy went up at least 20%. Meat is crazy expensive. Back to making quiche and meatless recipes

If there are going to be shortages and/or price-gauging on products that you need and use regularly, it's wise to purchase them when available. When there were actual shortages of items like disinfectant wipes, Lysol, paper towels, TP, etc., DH would buy them when he saw them at Meijer. We're not using Clorox wipes as much as we did early in the pandemic and have accumulated quite a few cannisters - probably enough to last through the rest of the year :)

Mr. BDE had a unique online grocery shopping experience that I'd like to share with you. He kept his venture secret until yesterday when the mysterious package was out for delivery on FedEx. DH was going for his swim and said that there might be a delivery that I would have to sign for and that I might be asked for ID. I had some suspicions about what was in the package that was delivered while DH was out ;) I saw FedEx truck in front of our house and greeted young driver at the front door. He said that he'd sign for me, and I asked if he needed to see ID. He laughed because he knew that the package contained alcohol and that it was obvious I was old enough to accept the box with two bottles of vintage wine that Mr. BDE had purchased through online auction. DH had apparently been working on the purchase of 1971 wine for our 50th anniversary on Friday for several weeks, and I didn't know anything about it until yesterday. When he called to make dinner reservations, he was told that cork/decanter charge would be $45 which is nonsense! We will enjoy the two 1971 bottles of Fossi Riserva Chianti Classico home. No idea how they'll taste, but the bottles are beautiful.

That is so wonderful a story! Happy Anniversary!

Thanks for sharing this. DH and I don't go to Costco as frequently as some folks we know. Once a month is enough to keep our favorite products in stock.

They made plenty of people upset with their strictly enforced mask mandates, even after the “crisis” passed. I rarely shop there now. Just for prescriptions and rawhide chews for the dogs.

Read the label on those wipes. Look at how long the surface must remain wet in order to work.

DH and I went to Nino's on Sunday for a few items that we needed for dinner on the 4th and yesterday. I made a list, and we were each going to get various items so we didn't have to be in the store for a long time. It was pretty busy even at 1:00PM on the holiday. We got in the checkout lane behind two men who had a sh**load of stuff in two carts. I said, "That looks like some party!", and one of the men said they would be feeding a lot of hungry kids. They paid cash for their order - almost $500. The young cashier seemed a bit flustered, but we assured her that our order was much smaller, and we had our own bags and would pack our order so the young bagger could take a little break.

When we were almost home, I asked DH if he had gotten tortillas which we needed for our tuna tacos. I didn't recall seeing them in our cart, and I hadn't gotten them. Turns out that DH would have to go out again to get tortillas along with a few other things at Meijer. After we put away the Nino's order, DH asked if there was anything else that we needed. I checked to see if we had limes and found only one old one that probably wouldn't yield much juice. He made a brief list that included the tortillas, limes, holiday-themed bouquet (Nino's were sold out), and a jar of Randall Great Northern beans for my baked beans and left for Meijer. DH called about half an hour later to say that Meijer was out of holiday flowers, had no limes, and no Randall beans. He was almost home but was going to keep driving east and go to Kroger. No luck there, either - no holiday bouquets, no limes, no Randall beans, but he did get almond milk, orange juice, and cereal for which had coupons. Ended up back at Nino's where he got limes, but they were also out of Randall beans, so he got a pound of bulk Great Northern beans. It seems that everyone was making baked beans for their holiday gatherings, and I suspect guacamole and Margaritas (or Sangria) were on the menu, as well :D

We enjoyed one of the 1971 bottles on the 4th. The color was a bit strange, but the aged wine was actually quite good. We will save the second bottle and open it for Christmas - our 1/2 anniversary :) Besides the 1971 wines, DH surprised me with our marriage license exquisitely custom-framed. He was choked up when he presented it to me, saying that our 50 years together was something to be celebrated and not kept in a lock box with other documents :)
