Our local Target and Walmart stores have canning supplies. Have to tried country feed stores?
Yep, 3 different ones and 5 different groceries and the local Walmart. I found them eventually at a Walmart in rough part of Houston. Stocked up.

I’ve been looking for lids with no luck.

Orange habanero jelly? Sounds tasty!
That orange stuff can burn a hole in your esophagus. Maybe an eighth of a teaspoon over philly cheese on cracker. I know people who think they’re tough as nails....cry like babies after swallowing some.

lol..mines not that bad. I coat my chicken wings in it with a little bit of soy sauce, ginger and garlic added to it. I also use it to make orange chicken, it’s really good on salmon and my boss uses it on his smoked pork ribs with his special rub for BBQ.

Sounds yummy. I like a little heat on my food but those habaneros sitting like little pumpkins on grocery shelves always wink at me. They know I’m scared of them!

As I recall, the green ones are hottest. Is that correct? Once mature, they cool off a bit.

Anyone else noticing the shortage of canning supplies (or did I miss this discussion)? I’ve tried family in rural MN and family in rural KS, none there either. Hitting up my bff in Chicago area to see if there is any a around her. I’m in SE TX and the 5 different stores I’ve tried are out. There is going to be an orange habanero jelly crisis to go along with the pandemic if I don’t find canning lids.
There are lids available on Amazon. They may be more expensive than at the stores, but would work if needed.

The ones that are green in the store are usually scotch bonnet peppers, at least around here. Quick search says they are the same on the Scoville chart. I’ve had some jalapeños I’ve grown be hotter than some habaneros and I’ve grown some smoking hot habaneros. We do what we cal a “heart attack” challenge, bacon wrapped cream cheese stuff habaneros cooked on the grill. Sometimes they are hot, sometimes they aren’t so bad. I usually don’t use them in the jelly when they are green but I do make salsa with it and don’t notice much difference. My salsa is 24 tomatoes, 24 jalapeños, 12 serranos and 12 habaneros plus the extra stuff. I usually don’t seed them. Our heat tolerance has increased significantly since we moved to Houston. I need to make a another big batch (doubled) and can it. We put it on lots of stuff. Figure if we have to break into our end of the world food supply, between the salsa and the jelly, they should be edible.

At the stores by me (metro Detroit), the paper products aren't cleared out yet, but they are definitely getting low. I'm to the point of picking up a pack of TP and some paper towels every time I go to the store, whether I'm there for them or not.

Sigh - I'm so over Covid.

Sadly, I don't think COVID is done with us. We have yet to experience a winter with COVID, but we're going to find out soon enough. Snow showers in tomorrow's forecast in the "D".

DH and I are doing the same thing with items that we use regularly - not hoarding, just making sure we don't run out of necessities.

Yesterday, I bought a bag of Junior Mints, the ones in the little boxes, just in case the little kids come around tonight. There’s a lot of younger kids here and I always try to get something they won’t choke on.

I looked at the bag and the boxes were a bit crushed. I put the bag in the freezer thinking if the candy was slightly soft that firming them up would be good. Well, I opened the bag and the candy had apparently been so melted, the peppermint filling was inside the exterior bag!! I opened one little box and all the chocolate circles are literally empty and stuck together.

I’m so aggravated. I cannot get back to the store today. Plus I forgot to get the mini bags of popcorn for the older kids. Ugh. I guess they’ll get Smarties Candies instead, which is fine. My girlfriend found a big 5lb bag of them. She knows I use them when the metal taste is bad from cancer treatment.

Sorry about the Junior Mint fiasco, PayrollNerd. I remember colorful Smarties from my trick-or-treating days :D

It is actually a very nice day here - not too cold, bright and sunny, no rain. We have no idea if there will be a lot of activity in the neighborhood tonight, but we are going out to dinner and won't be here to hand out treats. I put together a goodie bag for the little girl next door and will drop it off when we leave for dinner. Our subdivision management company sent out an email to homeowners about how to handle trick-or-treating: Set up a table on driveway with treats for kids to take by themselves, mark driveway for proper social distancing, limit contact with children and their chaperones, wipe down table frequently during trick-or-treat time frame. I think we're better off not participating.

I hope we don't get any trick or treaters. We usually don't. If we do, they can each get a Ramen. Who doesn't like Ramen?!

I live in the land of denial. You'd never believe we are in the midst of a pandemic by the number of trick or treaters. I made up about 50 individual bags, put them in a Halloween bowl and set it on a small plant table off the porch out on the sidewalk leading to house. Gone in less than 20 minutes, and they haven't slowed down. I would go out and retrieve the empty bowl, but I'm scared I'd get attacked by angry kiddies.

My aunt just texted me. Their church is doing a trunk or treat. 550 people so far!!! Snow cones, hotdogs, cotton candy, drinks & an outdoor movie on the lawn. Plus hayrides. I’m blown away.

I have not had 1 little goblin. Not even the adorable toddlers. I left a bowl of smarties on the porch for 2 hours with the screen door cracked and all 3 outside lights on. No one.

The family across the street is hosting a party with 6 kids maybe about 8-12 years old. They’re playing games with them and doing fireworks.

Everyone stayed home tonight. We didn't have any trick or treaters.

I bet there will be loads of Halloween candy on sale tomorrow. As if anyone even leaves the house anymore.

No trick or treaters here but we never have any out here. Made a batch of salsa tonight. 16 jars should hold me for 5-6 months, if I don’t share.
Grocery store was well stocked today. Got some good deals on meat so bought what we could for the freezer, I should have everything to make tamales this year. Pork loin was $1.69/pound so we bought 2 big ones for tamales. That will make us go through the salsa pretty quickly. Got some more non perishables.
I have to drive 6 hours to a sister location every month, small town walgreens in TX about half way has had chlorox wipes every time I stop for snacks and restroom so I think I’ll start picked some up on my way through.

I used to love Jr Mints.
Omg, could anyone use a little humor today? Do you remember the Seinfeld episode about The Junior Mints? LOL
